Guilty Rose Chapter 9

My mouth felt dry, head is pounding. It hurts...

"Arisa! Arisa! Arisa!" Kyle's voice called, beckoning me to draw near. My eyes fluttered then opened to excruciating brightness. "Oh, thank God! You're awake!"

"What happened? Where am I?" I slurred, and then pressed a hand to my forehead.

"Well, for starters, you got slapped really hard by Allie. And secondly, you're in the infirmary because you passed out," Kyle said, embarrassed. Why? I don't know. He stood up as if to leave. "If you're ok then, I'll be taking my leave."

"Kyle... Um, thanks. Thanks for watching over me," I said as he turned, feeling a little flushed about his sudden change in personality.

"No problem. Come to class if you want. Mr. Barson doesn't mind," he said, closing the door behind him.

"So, how are you feeling?" a woman stepped into view and I saw a doctor's coat around her shoulders. She smiled sympathetically. "I'm Doctor Mari. I see that you have been treated badly on the first day of school."

"Well, I've been slapped by a girl for a reason I don't know. How long has it been?" I asked, disgruntled.

"It's only been a few minutes. Class haven't even started yet. I'm guessing that Allie caught Evan doing something to you that is "inappropriate" and she thought he was cheating. That girl..." Dr. Mari trailed off and patted my hand soothingly. "Since you've got hurt, you can stay here for the rest of the period."

"It's ok, I don't want to start skipping school this early in the year," I grinned widely. I hopped off the bed and slipped on my shoes. "Thanks for everything, Dr. Mari."

"It's nothing, really. I just don't want to see my students' get hurt," she said in response. I walked to the door and smiled at her again before closing the door. Students were still milling around, staring at me. I ducked my head and walked down the hall.

"There you are! I've been looking for you!" Cain said as I rounded a corner. He ran up to me, dark hair all over the place. "I'm so sorry. I didn't want that to happen!"

"It's ok, it's not your fault. It's ok," I soothed him since he looked as if he was about to cry. I smiled warmly and he slumped, resting his head on my shoulder. "Wha-? What are you doing?"

His breath flowed down my shirt, giving me goose bumps. Huh? Everyone was staring at us, some were even whispering behind their hands.

"Uh, Cain, I think you should get up. Everyone's staring," I said, panicking. I was rarely the center of attention but this was too much.

"Who cares what they say? Let them watch and talk," Cain said, his breath sending a spiral of blood to rush up to my face. Even through the shirt, I felt his eyebrows scrunch up into a frown. "Don't ever scare me like that, Arisa."

"I'm sorry," I said, patting his head. His shoulders shook, giving me the sense of him being a child. "It's going to be all right! I promise."

He lifted his head and his black eyes shimmered with moisture. Oh, no. Please don't cry. I want to say that but the words got caught in my throat. His arms went around my shoulders, pressing me into him.

"I'm sorry that Allie hurt you. I should stay away from Arisa from now on," Cain said, sadly.

What?
