I shook that thought from my head and proceeded to run as fast as I could to the pyramid. It took me about ten minutes to find Mr Walton’s group.
“Mr Walton! Thank goodness!” I panted, leaning against the elaborate golden walls of the Galerie d'Apollon.
“Miss Coburn? What’s the matter?” Walton asked, mistaking my lack of breath for panic, rather than the fact I’d ran here all the way from the Tuleries Gardens. This hopefully wouldn’t require much acting.
“I went to the toilet ages ago and when I got back Mrs Newton wasn’t there. I’ve been wandering round the museum for hours!” I looked up at him, trying to appear upset.
“Oh dear.” He said getting out his phone. “I’ll just give Jill a call and tell her what happened, you can stay with my group.” I nodded, feeling an urge to hug Mr Walton for saving my arse from Newt.
“Thanks Mr W!” I said, before rushing off to talk to Bianca, who was waving at me from across the room.
“Hah! lost eh?” She sniggered, crossing her arms. “I want to know the juicy details of your secret tête-à-tête.” I smiled, opening my bag.
“Here, have a cake.”
“Don’t try and change the subje…ooh where did you get those?” I had taken the cakes with me from lunch, they looked so tasty, I wasn’t going to leave them behind.
“Got them at lunch.” We each took a cake and started nibbling away when I heard a voice behind us.
“If you were so lost, when did you manage to buy the cakes?” It was Marie looking sour-faced as usual.
“Umm, the café? Just because I was lost doesn’t mean I wasn’t hungry.” I replied cheerily, stuffing an especially chocolately bit in my mouth.
“You’re up to something and when I find out, Newt’s going to send you home so fast…”
“I wasted my breakfast on you yesterday” I interrupted . “Now I really don’t want to waste my cakes on you today.” Marie’s faced tuned red and blotchy and she was just about to say something when a loud voice rang out from behind us.
“How dare you threaten the ladies honour, you disreputable wench!” I groaned at the sight of Tim standing there, his chest puffed out dramatically. Marie looked momentarily stunned then snickered nastily.
“You are such a bloody geek!” She flounced off , leaving Tim looking wounded. Usually I would shout at him for being so embarrassing, but I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for him, he appeared to be quite hurt by her words.
“Tim, do you want a cake?” I asked awkwardly, brandishing a cherry-topped sponge at him encouragingly. He seemed to snap out of his trance.
“You’re giving me a cake?” He said it as if I was donating him one of my kidneys.
“Er, yeah. If you want one?” He took the cake from me, and reached down to kiss my hand. I thankfully managed to swipe it away in time.
“Don’t push it.” I growled, pointing a finger at him. I watched him skip off to Simon, calling out.
“She gave me a cake!” Bianca burst out laughing.
“Who knew a fruit sponge could make someone so happy?”
The class moved on through the galleries, and so I told Bianca about my meeting at the Venus de Milo and what followed.
“Ooh la la! Now that definitely qualifies as a tryst!” Bianca cried triumphantly, as we descended the staircase in front of ‘Victory of Samothrace landing’.
“Oh please, we ate some baguettes. We didn’t check in to the Ritz for some passionate lovemaking!” Bianca raised her eyebrows at me suggestively.
“How do I know what really happened?” I swatted her with my Louvre map laughing.
“You have a dirty mind.” Thank goodness I never told her about falling into his arms in the Metro, her romantic little mind would have gone into overdrive.
