Daku throat was dry as he tried to swallow. His fingers trembled as he read this letter.
What caused this decision? he wondered.
Adoni could feel his hand holding her own. This was the day that she and Peter would be united forever.
Even though she dreaded the moment he would bind them by a kiss, she knew she had to go though with this.
The man that preached was elderly, but his voice was stable and strong.
“We bind these two lovers, for a life, a lifetime, and a marriage. If anyone has any objections, let them speak now, or stay in silence forever.”
The marriage ceremony was held in the middle of the desert, just a small piece of the desert covered with people.
Neighbors all around where invited to attend, and here they where now, dressed in their best robes. They all stood around, gawking at the couple being bound together.
Adoni, herself, was dressed in a white robe, the very same one giver to her by Daku. She would pay for her sins.
Peter was dressed in the opposite, in an exquisite black robe. They must have looked stunning, like Ying and Yang.
“…and let them bind each other for eternity, with this kiss.” The moment had come, and Adoni’s stomach did a flip. She wanted to run, to break down, to kick and scream, but she just leaned forward.
Peters lips where hot against her own, and his arms where around him. Adoni pretended that it was Daku, and finally eased up.
They let go, so they could drink wine together as a couple.
Daku put the letter down.
“I can’t believe I wasn’t there.” Daku didn’t feel rage, or sadness, just a sense of emptiness.
He re-read the letter:
To my dearest Daku,
I am pleased to inform you, that I am now
a married woman. The man I have fortunately
married, is none other than my darling Peter.
I am pleased to say that Summerland is my new
sister. I want to start a family as soon as possible
and I was wondering when you would marry Sally.
It has been a while since I have seen you and your
lovely fiancé. I hope to see you again soon. Good
luck with your job as a spokesperson, and much love
from my family.
-Many regards,
Adoni
“Huh?” Daku said to himself. He had no idea what Adoni meant by saying that she was fortunate to marry Peter.
He knew that not that many girls would fight for Peter, much less marry him. Something was up, and he was going to get to the bottom of it.
