Tyler's POV:

Ring. Ring. Ring.

"Wake up you lazy ass."

I look up and see my little brother, Ethan, dressed up for school. I ignore him and bury my face in my pillow.

"I'm fine right where I am. Now can you please leave?" I respond.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

I reach for my alarm clock and turn off the snooze button.

"No can do bro, besides mom want to talk to you."

"What about?"

"How should I know? She just told me to wake you up and if you hadn't noticed today is Monday. So we have school."

"Ugh, fine." I drag myself out of bed and walk downstairs to the kitchen.

Our house, well it's not the best, but at least we have somewhere to live. Sure the kitchen is small and there are only two bedrooms, but at least it's got potential.

Once I reach the kitchen I see my mom getting breakfast ready in a hurry. She works early in morning and is always the last one to arrive home. So I help her out with dinner, cleaning the house, or anything else that I can do. Ever since my dad left for his boss, we've been having trouble paying bills, so I got job after school working in a skateboard store.

"Hey mom, need some help?"

"Yes, can you please give your brother his breakfast because I'm running late for work. Oh and Tyler I'll be back late tonight so please make dinner for the two of you."

"Okay bye mom."

"Bye sweetheart." She quickly kisses me on the forehead and rushes out the door, slamming it behind her.

I finish making the breakfast she started and called Ethan down. He came and we both began eating breakfast in complete silence, usually breakfast was loud and cheerful when my dad was here. We ate as a family; we even had our seats that we claimed. I always took the one on the left side; my brother across from me to the right side, my dad took one of the armchairs on the other edge of the table, along with my mom across from him. I can still remember him eating with his left hand, telling my mother her pancakes were the best when it wasn't, he only did that to put a smile on her face.

When my dad left I placed his chair in the garage and never looked back in there again.

I left the kitchen and got dressed for school, in my faded navy blue jeans and a gray sweater. I look down at my necklace my father gave me when I was eight. It was his lucky gray and silver guitar pick in a black chain necklace; he just added the single music note. He would always play a song for me and Ethan before our bed time and one night when he didn't play for us, he gave me the guitar pick, saying it was a symbol of the songs he always played for me and the music note was the songs I love that he would play. He said it was sort of like the love he has for me, just stored around my neck. I remember every song he played. The first one I ever asked was "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," it was always my favorite as a child. I can still hear him humming the song while he played and I would fall asleep, hearing his last words, 'Good night kiddo.'

"Zane! Where have you been? Your late as always!" yells my world history teacher, Mr. Hale.

"Sorry but the bus came late again." I lied.

"How about you stop lying for once, take this detention slip and we'll be having a talk later after class."

Annoyed as I am I did as he said and sat next to Riker, my best friend.

Mr. Hale began class by saying we have a world history project to do on choosing a civilization and giving a ten page report on it, along with creating a five minute speech about it. Hell, like I'm actually going to do that. I don't mind taking a zero.

"Oh yes one more thing class, this assignment will be in pairs that I'm going to choose for you all." Mr. Hale said.

Everyone groaned in the classroom. He always makes us do a project every quarter and there all just stupid. First quarter he made us do a project on Confucian, Legalism, and Daoism. I didn't do it, but my old partner did and we both got B's on it, so that was pretty cool.

"Okay first is Katherine Davis with Lucas Mills." He stated.

"Next is Tyler Zane with Cassie Evans." Mr. Hale says.

"WHAT!" Some girl yelled, which I'm guessing must be my partner.

"Is there a problem Ms. Evans?" Mr. Hale says.

"Yes there is, I don't want to be paired with him." She yells pushing her glasses back to her face.

So she is my partner, she's not bad looking actually. She's got long red hair and big brown eyes hidden by her glasses, wearing a tan sweater dress showing off her long legs and beat-up converse sneakers. I've never actually seen a girl wear sneakers with a dress. Usually they were high-heels or flats, but not sneakers.

She turns around and looks at me with a deadly glare in her eyes. Oh, she's a feisty one, it matches her hair actually. Can't wait to mess with her head now.

Mr. Hale wants us to get an early start on the project so he makes us sit next to our partners for the rest of the class period, choosing a topic. I sat next to Cassie with a smile on my face, ready to annoy the shit out of her.

"Listen Red, you can do the project, by yourself and we both take the credit for it. Sounds okay to you?" I ask with a smile on my face.

"First of all my name is Cassie, not Red and second of all, no, it doesn't sound okay to me because were both doing the project, got it?" She retaliates.

Wow, she must like things to go her way too. But nothing like my puppy dog eyes and irresistible smile won't change her mind.

"What the hell are you doing with your face?" She questions me.

So much for my irresistible smile, usually works on all the girls I do this to, but why not her? Something is definitely wrong with this chick.

"So what civilization do you have in mind?" She asks changing the topic.

"Well, I was thinking of making out with this red head girl, that I happen to know. What do you think of that?" I say with a grin on my face.

"Get a life Zane."

I chuckle at her remark and simply stare at her while she's writing something in her notebook.

"Since you don't seem to care about this assignment, I decided to choose Mesopotamia as our topic. We can meet up tomorrow at the library to get an early start, in the meantime at least do some research on our topic. Got it or do I have to write this down for you?" She says with anger in her voice.

But before I could say anything the bell rings and she gets up to leave for her next period class.

I watch her walking away until every inch of her leaves through the door and think, what the hell just happened here?:
