Amy gets up, "Phyllis, I have to discuss something with you."
I'm looking at Phyllis who's saying to Amy, "Let's go talk."
Amy's dad was sick, so she asked if she could be relieved. After hearing it Nadine asked she could also leave to go with Amy. The possibility of Amy being responsible for spiking my drink could be true, and with her gone I feel relieved. Kirsten asked to be excused right after Amy and Nadine left.
I go to my bedroom. The house is much quieter after two of the girls left. Phyllis seems to be gone most of the time. I find Kirsten in the family room later in the day. I sit down. She complains, "It's boring, isn't it? Phyllis left for some meeting. I don't even know where Quentin is. I saw Mr Yates early this morning when he left for work." There's a twinkle in her eyes.
She's in love with Gordon Yates! Thinking about it I'm probably too. I can't get him out of my head.
Kirsten, "You look sad."
"I have to go shower." I get up and leave the room.
Phyllis eventually told us three days later that we're going to a ball, "We're going to a ball tonight and I've asked one of my friends to buy you gowns. "
Kirsten is very much excited, "I've never been to a ball before. Is Mr Yates also going?"
Phyllis, "Yes. We're all going. But he's not going to drive with us."
Is he taking a date? I don't ask. Kirsten's clearly looking forward to the ball because she's talking as much as she did before Amy and Nadine left. I feel sad because our time here is running out. Why isn't she bothered about our time running out if she's in love with Gordon?
I don't see it, but Phyllis is looking at me; hoping that Gordon would make a move soon. She's wondering why he hasn't yet. She knows her brother. Maybe Gordon thinks that it would be too soon to confess his feelings for me. She can never understand him. He's always fast to act on his feelings; this time the real thing comes and he's wasting time! She's thinking of the dream she had last night of Gordon and me. I was the same as them; a vampire. Gordon and I looked so much in love! Phyllis told him about the dream a few minutes ago. All Gordon could mention was how much it bothers him that Kirsten is always making sure she's up and seeing him leave in the mornings. He even saw her more than once; when he got home late staring out of a window to watch him. Kirsten makes him feel uncomfortable when ever she's close by. She's in love with Gordon. And she's not even worried that tomorrow is her last day here. That's why Gordon's driving himself to the ball. As much as he'd like to see me; he can't stand it being close to Kirsten.
Kirsten has been looking out for Gordon since the first moment she arrived with me and Phyllis. She saw me walking away from them through a door that leads out to the garden so she followed me. She's angry at herself for not getting rid of me before Amy and Nadine left. How could she try something when she was the only one left in the house? She sees me going up steps and then she sees me and Gordon standing opposite each other. The jealousy drives her mad! She takes the steps up and makes sure she's not seen.
I had no idea I'd be seeing Gordon up here.
"You look very lovely tonight."
"Thanks, Mr Yates."
"Call me Gordon please." He's coming closer now, "I'm glad we're alone. There's something I have to talk to you about." A man calls for Gordon way down,"I'm sorry. I have to go. Can I walk you down?"
"No. It's okay. I'll go in a few minutes."
He comes closer, kisses my cheek and then says softly, "See you inside. I'll look for you."
I nod. I stare after him when he walks away. My heart's feeling so much joy that I can only smile at myself. I now know that he's interested in me. I look up at the sky for a few moments. I only see myself there when I look around. I walk towards the steps.
I'm on the third step from the top when I feel someone pushing me from behind. It's only when I'm lying on the ground, my left side feeling numb when I see Kirsten looking down from the top of the stairs. She's smiling. My eyes fall shut.
Gordon has been looking for me in the room where all the guests are gathered. He only sees Kirsten coming through the door from the garden. He's already asked Phyllis if she's seen me. And she hasn't seen me. He asks Kirsten just before the door, "Have you seen Guinevere?"
"No." She walks on.
He's thinking that it's a strange reaction from someone that has been trying so hard to get his attention. He walks out. Uses his vampire speed to get to the place he's last seen me. He stops in front of the stairs," Guinevere!"
I can hardly open my eyes, "Gordon. I'm sure Kirsten pushed me down the stairs." My eyes fall shut again.
"You have to keep awake. Don't sleep, Guinevere."
My eyes open again. He picks me up starts to move in vampire speed. And then he puts me in his car.
Am I dreaming this? Did he really move that fast?
He rushes me to the nearest Hospital. All the time telling me, "Don't' sleep Guinevere." I'm trying hard to stay awake. It's not easy. I feel a prick in my arm as the doctor injects me with something. I barely make out the doctor's face when he tells me, "You can sleep now."
He goes to Gordon outside the room in the hall, "I did an eye exam because of her head trauma. I could see swelling of the optic nerve. She's possibly suffering from brain hemorrhage caused by the bursting of an artery in the brain."
"Is there any more tests you can do to make sure?"
"I'll run a CT scan, which can reveal internal bleeding or blood accumulation, and an MRI. Also a neurological exam which can show swelling of the optic nerve. And then I can perform blood tests and a lumbar puncture, that's a spinal tap."
"Do it doctor, money is no issue."
"An admission note has to be completed."
Gordon's now looking at the doctor compelling him, "An admission note is not needed. You'll give her the best care possible. She'll complete one when she's able to. I will pay you, no need to worry."
The doctor smiles, "You're right. She can complete one when she's able. Are you a relative?"
Compelling the doctor again he says, "You'll listen to whatever decision I make."
