Chapter 6- Roses and Love Notes
“Where’s Sam,” I asked Cassie. It was lunch time and he was no where to be found, which wasn’t like him.
“I don’t know,” Cassie said looking around for him, “Oh wait there he is!” She pointed to Sam, who was making his way over to us.
He sat down in front of me with a smile that went from ear to ear.
“Woah, someone’s a little happy. What happened?” I asked. It was rare that I saw Sam really smile like this.
“Nothing,” he answered simply.
“Are you serious you’re going to say nothing happened to make you smile like an idiot like you are now?” Cassie said.
“Yupp. Nothing happened,” he said. I could tell he was trying to stop smiling but it wasn’t working. I wondered what had made him so happy. The last time I had seen him like this was when we met last year.
Tears were still streaming down my face as I walked out of the bathroom. George Henley had told me a few minutes ago, to go kill myself because no one wanted a nerd like me around.
How could someone be that mean and cruel? What had I ever done to him? Did I really deserve to die?
I had my head down so no one would see me crying. I bumped into someone.
“Oh I am so sorry,” I said, my voice cracking. I was trying to wipe away tears. I hated when people saw me cry.
“No it was my fault. Hey, are you okay?” the guy I bumped into asked looking very concerned. He looked really familiar. His name was on the tip of my tongue. His dark eyes, black hair, and guy skinnies instantly told me that he was a skater.
“Yeah I’m fine,” I said trying to walk away. I really just wanted to be alone right now.
“No you’re not okay. You’re crying,” he said grabbing my arm. I wiped my face more and was trying my best to hold in tears.
“Really, I’m okay. It’s no big deal."
He looked me in the eyes. His eyes were absolutely beautiful. He looked sad. He pulled me into a hug. He smelled like apples and cinnamon, which was actually a really nice smell. My body stiffened but then relaxed. My face filled with tears again. I cried and let it all out. He held me the whole time and told me that it was going to okay.
When my sobs finally stopped, he let go. He looked into my eyes again.
“Now, are you okay?” he asked.
I took a deep breath. “Better.” I looked at where I had cried. It was all wet. “Sorry I messed up your shirt.”
He smiled. “It‘s fine. I’m Sam, by the way.”
Sam! That as his name!
“Abby,” I said introducing myself.
“Want to talk?” he asked.
I smiled. “Actually yes. That would be really nice.”
He gave me the biggest smiled. It was if he had just won the lottery.
We walked to his house and talked for a while. We have talked everyday since then.
He was still the same sweet guy he was that day.
I looked at him. He was wearing the exact same smile.
The bell rang, indicating that lunch was over.
“We will find out what made you so happy,” Cassie said determined.
“Good luck with that,” Sam said smugly.
The three of us walked to our lockers which only had a few other lockers between them. I looked at mine and it had something sticking out of it. I got closer and saw that it was a red rose. Where did this come from?
I opened my locker and saw something that wasn’t mine. It looked like a note. I took it out and opened it. It read:
Dear Abby,
Roses are red
Violets are blue
You’ll never know
How much I love you.
The rose’s beauty
Cannot compare
To the way you make me
Stop and stare
Anonymous
My mouth dropped. What? Someone liked, no loved me? Maybe they were talking about another Abby. Were there any other Abbys at this school? This couldn’t be for me.
“Hey Cassie are there any other Abbys here?” I asked.
“Uhh no I don’t think so. Why?”
“I just got this note but I don’t think it’s for me,” I said handing her the note.
She read it and smiled. “Ooo Abby’s got a secret admirer!” she gushed, “Where’d you get it?”
“I just found it in my locker with this rose.”
“Do you have any idea who this could be from?”
“I have no clue.”
Cassie went into deep thought.
“Cassie, please don’t over think this. It’s no big deal.”
“No big deal? This is the sweetest thing ever!” she said.
I guess Sam was wondering what was going on because he walked over looking confused.
“Abby got a love note,” Cassie said handing it to him.
“Do you know who it’s from?” he asked.
“Nope. That makes this so much more fun!” Cassie squealed. Why was she more excited about this than I was? Sam was still smiling. They were both more excited than I was.
“Sam please tell Cassie that this isn’t a big deal.”
His smile faltered. “What? Of course it’s a big deal. Someone likes you. And it’s probably a good person since he did all this,” he said motioning to the rose and the note.
“Yeah well I don’t need a boyfriend right now. You guys know that,” I tell them. They know that I really wanted to focus on my schoolwork. Next year I’m going to college and I’m not going to slack off now just because some boy is into me.
“Abby, I am going to find out who this person is whether you like it or not,” Cassie said.
I was not going to look forward to this.
