A bead of sweat drips down my face and I wipe it away with the back of my hand. Fuck. It's so hot. I take a moment and collapse onto the cool grass. The cloudless sky offers no relief from the sun's endless rays. Deciding to move in the middle of summer was a stupid decision on our part.
I watch as Kelly gives directions to her boyfriend, Rex. "That goes up in our room," she instructs him.
Rex looks to where Kelly's outstretched finger is pointing and lifts the small antique table into his muscular arms. He raises his brows and Kelly nods her head.
"Yep, that's the one," she confirms.
I watch Rex's masculine body jump from the moving truck and stomp into our new condo. Kelly sees me lying on the grass and comes over to join me. She gives me a swift smack on the ass and then offers me a swig of her beer. I tell her no thanks.
"Can you believe we finally did it?" Kelly asks. "We've been planning on buying a condo together since we were just ten years old, Jess. And look at us, nine years later and we're actually doing it!"
Kelly gives me a toothy grin and I notice she has replaced her skull nose ring to a pretty diamond stud.
"Have you looked inside since they finished remodeling?" I ask her.
Kelly shakes her head. "No. But who cares? We're two minutes away from the beach, ten minutes away from school, and finally out of our parents' houses. I don't care if they remodeled it into Barbie's house. This condo is perfect for us."
I nod my head in agreement.
"So…" Kelly prods. "Have you talked to Kevin at all?"
"Nope. Not since our break-up."
Kelly's quiet for a moment and takes another swig of her beer. "I called him to let him know we'd be moving in this afternoon. He and Hunter should be here in a few hours to start unloading all their crap."
I run my fingers through the grass beneath me, secretly excited to see Hunter once again. I haven't seen him since our run-in at the diner. But oddly enough, I've been dreaming about him….almost every night. And they're not those romantic and sweet types of dreams either. They're those sex-filled dreams that leave me hot and bothered for the entire rest of the day.
"How ya' doing with that whole thing?" Kelly asks. "With Kevin, I mean?"
I shrug. "I'm pretty much over it. Like you said, he's an ass hole. He's only here to pay rent and I have a feeling we'll both stay out of the each other's way."
Kelly finishes her beer and puts the bottle against her forehead. She sighs as the beads of cold condensation melt into her skin.
"I just want the room farthest away from his," I add. "Better yet - whichever room you and Rex are sharing, I want the one right next to it. Hunter and Kevin can have the other two."
Rex shoulders his way out of the condo's front door and his face puckers with concern as he approaches us.
"Uhh…. So bad news," his deep voice booms.
"What?" Kelly and I ask in unison.
"When they remodeled, we must have not made it clear that we wanted room numbers to stay the same."
A knot forms in the pit of my stomach and I bite my lip wondering where Rex is going with this. Kelly stands from her spot on the grass and narrows her eyes on her boyfriend.
"What the hell are you talking about?" she sputters.
Rex runs a dirt-stricken hand through his curly brown hair, his brown eyes bouncing between Kelly and me.
"They tore down one of the walls and transformed two of the rooms into a master suite."
"Soo…..?" Kelly asks not grasping the concept.
"There are no longer four rooms," I find myself saying. "Now there's only three."
By the time Kevin and Hunter are on their way to the condo, Kelly is in full blown bitch-overdrive. Don't get me wrong - I love Kelly to pieces. But when life throws her a curve ball or something doesn't go her way….
…Well everybody needs to duck and take cover.
Rex and I choose to stay in the grass. I apply another layer of sun screen to my burning shoulders and offer some to Rex. He shakes his head and gives me a nervous look.
"Which one do you think will hafta leave?" he asks me.
But I secretly hope its Kevin.
It doesn't take long before Hunter and Kevin pull their separate vehicles into our driveway. Kelly stands waiting for them, her hands on her hips and her foot tapping impatiently. For someone so small and thin, she really does look intimidating.
Kevin gets out first and I feel a slight pang of loneliness when I see his beautiful face emerge from the car. His blonde hair has grown since the last time I saw him and from a distance he looks like a beach bum.
My gaze shifts to the second vehicle, and I find myself holding my breath as I watch Mr. Logan aka "Hunter" emerge from his fancy black convertible mustang. His dark hair sways lazily in the hot summer breeze and his face is even more gorgeous than I remembered. Both he and Kevin walk over to Kelly and I see her arms flapping up and down as she explains the situation to them.
I try to gauge their reactions, but since their backs are turned towards me, my attempt is pretty much useless. Kelly waves me over after a few long minutes and both men look my way. My legs feel wobbly as I watch Hunter's lips draw up into a smile as I approach.
God he's so beautiful.
"Nice to see you again, Jessie," Hunter says quietly. "The sunlight really agrees with you."
Oohhhh that voice….
Wait. Did he just give me a compliment?
Kevin gives me a curt nod and then all three of us turn to Kelly. Even though I'm not touching Hunter I can feel how close his body is to mine. Erotic images from my dreams pop into my head and my cheeks flush with embarrassment.
"So, here's the deal," Kelly says folding her hands together in front of her lips. "No one is going to be leaving."
My eyes widen at her statement. Two spare bedrooms for three people? That only means one thing - two of us will have to share a room.
"Fine," I say, "but I'm not gonna be the one that has to share."
Kelly gives me 'the look,' and my weak moment of confidence wilts away to nothing. Kevin crosses his arms over his chest and frowns. I sneak a glance at Hunter and see that same silly grin is plastered on his lips. Doesn't anything faze this guy?
"I know it's not ideal," Kelly proceeds, "but if everyone could keep an open mind for just a minute, I think we can come to a reasonable solution."
No one says anything. I can hear Rex's heavy footsteps approaching from behind us. He must wonder what the hell is happening. At least with Kelly in control though, he knows that shit will get figured out. Nobody messes with Kelly when she's in charge.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jessie and Hunter - you both work night shifts mostly. Correct?"
I nod my head.
"That's correct," Hunter says and his grin widens.
"While Kevin," Kelly says directing her attention to my stupid ex-boyfriend, "You work all mornings and day shifts. Correct?"
Kelly glares at him. "Look. I know the three of you would be most comfortable if Kevin and Hunter were the ones to share a room. But since your schedules are so opposite, I'm afraid it'll cause problems down the line. And frankly girls and boys, I'm not dealing with that petty shit. So here's what we're going to do."
Rex moves around our small circle, coming up behind Kelly and slipping his arms around her tiny waist. A faint pink color creeps onto Kelly's cheeks and she leans back to give Rex a quick peck on the lips. Normally I don't feel uncomfortable when I see those two giving each other affection. But when I'm in between my ex-boyfriend and my dream guy (literally), watching the two of them act all lovey-dovey makes my stomach kind of queasy.
Kelly points her index finger toward Kevin. "You, Kevin, will be taking the small bedroom on the second floor as your own."
Then she turns her gaze to me. "And you, my dear Jessie, will be sharing the master suite with Hunter."
"But nothing, Jessie," Kelly says cutting me off. "It's just temporary. Plus, the suite is so big you probably won't even notice you're sharing a room with someone else."
Yea. Not unless your roommate happens to be a Greek god.
I frown at her bossiness and can feel the anger in me starting to build.
"Jess, it's either that or you have to force someone out," Kelly says and shrugs her shoulders. "Take your pick."
And with her statement, all eyes turn to me. Sweat trickles down the small of my back and wonder if it's from the heat or from this unbearably embarrassing moment. If I had the same nerve as Kelly, I'd just tell Kevin to piss off and go find someplace else to live.
But that's not me.
I hate having all this attention on me. I bite my lip and glance at Hunter. His grin remains plastered on his lips, but his eyes are unreadable. God, I just wish I knew what he was thinking!
"Alright," I mumble. "We'll do it your way, Kelly."
Kelly squeals with delight and pulls me in for an intense hug.
"Thanks Jessie! I knew you'd be cool with it."
And then she's tugging on Rex's arm in the direction of the moving van. Her feminine voice starts chirping out different demands to both Rex and Kevin in regards to what she wants brought inside and where she wants it put.
"God she's so annoying," Kevin mutters under his breath.
He gives a slight nod to Hunter and then walks away to join Rex. And that's when I become acutely aware that now it's just Hunter and I standing in the driveway. My stomach squirms with a fit of desire and I force myself to look at him.
Those beautiful eyes of his stare back at me and he takes a few steps in my direction. Oh God, oh God, oh God. He's close enough for me to smell his delicious cologne and I have to remind myself over and over again to breathe. Hunter reaches his hand up to push a wisp of blonde hair away from my ear, but he's careful not to touch my skin.
But then he leans in even closer. And this time I feel the lightest trace of his lips as they brush against my earlobe. His seductive touch makes me shiver and more of those naughty thoughts start parading through my mind.
"Welcome home," Hunter whispers. "My new roomie."
