When They Get Roses They Don't Cry

You brought the rose the first time we met,
though years go by, I will never forget.
I didn't quite know what to say or do,
I wonder at the impression I left with you.

All which you have shown me is kindness.
Maybe somewhere I can lose this blindness,
become more round and less oblong,
and find the time and place where I belong.

Gentle soul which you appear to be,
I wonder at times why you chose me.
There are other women who are not as shy,
and when they get roses they don't cry.
