A Work In Progress

Part 1:

The beginning credits open. CUE (SONG). The Diffy family is driving in there SUV from Vancouver to Portland. Pim D. is reading a teen magazine. Barb D. is filing her nails. Lloyd D. is driving while drinking his coffee. Phil D. is on his laptop when he comes across an article that he read aloud.

Phil:

Oh my God…

Barb:

What's wrong?

Phil:

Looks up at her.

A year ago today Martha Teslow, hotel owner, died in a house fire.

Barb:

That's terrible. Does it say the cause of the fire?

Phil:

It's undetermined… I guess the house burned down before any fire trucks showed up…Is anyone else a little worried about this place?

Lloyd:

It couldn't have happened in Portland. It's a big city. Someone's was bound to see…

Phil:

Scans the article again.

Oh… She was in a city about six hours outside of Portland… Burns.

Barb:

Jeez… Does this place put all its deaths on display?

Phil:

No… She was a millionaire. 'Martha Teslow owned forty-six five-star hotels all over Oregon.'

Barb:

Sounds fitting… We'll stay at one of them when we get there. Where's the best location…

Lloyd:

How 'bout the nearest…

Pim:

It's the middle of summer! See if she owns one by the beach.

Phil:

Sounds good to me.

Looks for a beach location and finds it.

There's one in Seaside, Oregon, right on the beach.

Lloyd:

Forces a smile at him in the rearview mirror.

Alrighty. Just give me the directions…

CUT to the Teslow's hotel.

Keely enters the lobby of the hotel through the staff lounge carrying a large box.

Keely:

How about we just close up for the night? Not like anyone's coming at three a.m.

Sets the box down under the counter.

Mandy:

Looks out the window.

You know your grandmother…

Keely and Mandy:

Quoting grandma…

"If you don't expect customers you're sure to get 'em."

Keely:

Twirls the ring on her finger.

I never understood that.

Mandy:

It's your grandmother. What'd you expect?

Keely:

Puts the check-in book under the counter.

I don't know… Some slack.

Mandy:

Face it, sweetie. This place is gonna be open 24/7 until we all keel over.

Keely:

Laughs a little.

She always was kinda stubborn.

Mandy:

She's… persistent.

Keely:

Sighs.

There's one more box out back, so…

Keely is cut off by the bell on the front door, seeing a family about to check in.

Oh, great…

Keely goes back to the staff lounge and the Diffy family enters with the exception of Phil.

Barb:

You guys still open?

Lloyd:

Whispers to Lloyd.

Hon, it's a hotel. They're open all day…

Mandy:

Uhh, yeah, we're open. How many rooms?

Barb:

Three rooms, please.

Looks around.

I guess Phil's out getting the bags.

Lloyd:

Babe, you don't think we could all fit in one room?

Barb:

Why would we want to?

Mandy:

Rings them up and hands Lloyd the keys.

They're on the third floor. My daughter will get your bags.

Lloyd:

Hands her his credit card.

Phil:

Enters with a load of bags, and trips over the door frame.

Lloyd:

Points to Phil, and looks at Mandy.

My son…

Mandy:

Oh! You can leave those there. I'll have someone take them up for you. Keely!

Keely:

Enters from the staff lounge again, and whispers under her breath.

Yay, more bags.

Lloyd, Barb, and Pim head up to their rooms, but Phil stays behind, gathering his own bags to bring to the room.

Keely:

Approaches Phil.

You can leave those here. I'll take 'em.

Phil:

Stares at Keely for a second before saying..

Uh, n-no that's okay. I got 'em. They're pretty heavy, anyway…

Begins to walk away from her.

Keely:

Grabs the handle to his bag.

I can handle it…

She takes the rest of the bags and loads them onto a cart, leaving Phil in the lobby.

Phil:

Says under his breath.

Thanks…

Early Sunday morning, Phil wakes up to a splash and looks out the window. Keely is taking a swim. He watches intently through his window, until the knock at his door interrupts. Lloyd enters halfway.

Lloyd:

Hey buddy, we're going to sign some papers for the house. You alright here?

Phil:

Uh, yeah. Yeah, I'll find something to do.

Heads down to the pool, and watches Keely from a snack machine he stands in front of.

Liam (Employee):

No loitering. You swim or move on…

Phil:

Startled, he grabs a towel from the rack next to the snack machine and moves on.

Sorry.

Stumbles into the pool room, and looks around nervously. He sees Keely and realizes immediately that coming down was a bad idea. He looks back at the employee who shoots him an evil stare. So he takes off his shirt, preparing to swim, but stops as he sees Keely getting out of the pool. CUE PURE.

Keely:

To herself

Shit! I forgot to bring a towel, good job Keely.

To Phil who has a towel in his hand.

Are you gonna use that?

Phil:

Points at the towel in his own hand.

Oh…no you can have it.

Pause.

Keely:

Okay. I'll come to you…

Annoyed.

Phil:

Oh! Sorry.

Walks over to her.

It's the least I could do.

Keely:

I didn't say thank you…

Dries off in front of him and notices him staring.

Should I be charging you for this?

Phil:

Snaps out of it.

Oh, I'm sorry! I-I'm just wondering… if you knew-you know… a place where one could… hang out? You know?

Keely:

Are you asking me out?

Phil:

Nervously.

Oh, no. I just… I-I'm sorry. I don't usually…

Keely:

Stutter…?

Phil:

Nods.

I just don't feel like getting rejected today, but some idiot took control of my mouth and…

Keely:

So, you were?

Phil:

Confused, but realizes after a moment that she was referring to him asking her out.

I-I wouldn't say that... But if you want the company…

Keely:

Thanks for the offer… But I don't even know your name.

Phil:

Right.

Puts his hand out for a shake.

My name's Phillip Diffy. Go ahead and laugh.

Keely:

Hardly. My name…

Sighs

Is Keely Vera Teslow.

Phil:

Holds back a smirk.

Keely:

My mom was a hippy, okay?! Anyway, it's better than Diffy.

Phil:

Sure… I'm really loving the rain today.

Smiles.

Keely:

It's not raining…

Phil:

Well, I wish it were raining… But now I'm just stuck with you.

Keely:

Sarcastically.

Funny. I liked you better when you stuttered.

Phil:

Well liked you better when you were wet.

Awkward moment.

I mean! Not like that…

Keely:

Nice.

Phil:

Can we start over? I'm Phillip, you can call me Phil.

Keely:

Rather call you Dick…

Phil:

I see how it is.

Begins to walk away.

Keely:

Wait…

Phil turns around.

You said you wanted a hang-out spot…

Phil:

Yeah…

Keely:

I know someplace… Really special.

Part 2:

Keely leads Phil to a store and walks down an aisle way near the back.

Phil:

This… Is the special place?

Keely:

Hands a piece to Phil.

Shut up. Just try it.

Phil:

Wait… you won't get in trouble to for eating off the racks?

Keely:

Looks toward the cashier and shakes her head.

I know the manager.

Phil:

Hesitantly takes the candy.

Alright.

Lets his eyes close.

Oh my God.

Keely:

Right?

Phil:

Nods in approval. Opens his eyes and stares at Keely.

Keely:

Why are you staring at me like that?

Phil:

Chokes a little.

I'm sorry… It just caught me off guard.

Keely:

I don't lie. Told you it was the best thing you'd ever put in your mouth.

Phil:

So… About that little place…

Keely:

Well… Actually it's-

Interrupted by her cell phone. Picks it up.

Hello? Mom… I know. Okay! I'll be there in a minute.

Hangs up.

Shit! I gotta get back.

Phil:

Should I walk you, or…?

Keely:

Begins to walk away.

Um… How about you stick around.

Phil:

I thought you had to work.

Keely:

As long as I'm behind the counter, my mom doesn't care whether or not I'm flirting with a cute boy from Canada.

Walking away from Phil.

Phil:

Flirting?

CUT TO HOTEL RECEPTION COUNTER WHERE TIME LAPSE BEGINS. CUE YOU ARE THE BEST THING.

After about a half an hour, Mandy walks in. Keely turns away from Phil and sees her mother's expression.

Keely:

To Phil

Brace yourself.

Phil nods a little confused.

Mandy:

Tilts her head slightly as she studies Phil.

Who's this, honey?

Keely:

Scoots off the counter.

Mom, this is Phillip. Or Phil…

Phil:

Offers his hand to Mandy, who takes it.

Nice to meet you.

Mandy:

Likewise.

Unknowingly keeps his hand.

Keely:

Mom? You gonna let go… anytime soon?

Mandy:

Ignores Keely.

So, you're Keely's… boyfriend?

Keely:

Annoyed.

Mom….

Phil:

Oh, no! No we just met… t-today. We're friends.

Mandy:

Well! I'll be damned! My baby girl actually found a handsome gentleman.

Turns to Keely.

Better than those gangbangers you brought home before, huh?

Laughs.

Keely:

Mom! Enough! No more harassing my friend…

Mandy leaves with a surrendering raise of the hands.

Phil:

She's… Nice.

Smiles.

Keely:

Whatever. So when are you leaving for the new house?

Phil:

I don't know. When they finally sign those papers and talk to the previous owner.

Checks his watch.

Should be doing that right now. It's been a good five hours since they left.

CUT TO MR. AND MRS. DIFFY RIDING TO THE NEW HOUSE.

Lloyd:

You wanna stop off for a bite? It's a long ride.

Barb:

No, hon. I'm not hungry.

Lloyd:

You sure? We can grab some Benni's, your favorite.

Barb:

Shakes her head, looking out the window.

Lloyd:

Babe, you okay?

Silence.

Barb:

Have you noticed how different Phil's been acting?

Lloyd:

I thought we were talking about lunch. Did you want Ben-

Barb:

No! I don't want to talk about food right now, Lloyd!

Lloyd:

If you wanted to go somewhere else, you could've just said something.

Barb:

Exhales, annoyed. Followed by a long pause of silence.

Lloyd:

What's going on, babe?

Barb:

I found one of Phil's notebooks…

Lloyd:

Turns away from the road for a second.

And? What's he up to?

Barb:

… Did you know one of Phil's friends… died? He kept a diary from Toronto and everything.

Lloyd:

I didn't even know… I didn't know he had any friends. We were only there for two months.

Barb:

Under her breath.

Maybe that's the problem.

Lloyd:

It's not our fault, Barb.

In effort to comfort Barb, Lloyd raps his free hand around hers. They lock eyes and Barb begins to cry. Lloyd swerves into on-coming traffic as he sees a semi turning into his lane. As the brakes in the car go out the car is uncontrollable. The semi, unable to stop in time, crashes into their car on Barb's side.

Lloyd:

You wanna stop off for a bite? It's a long ride.

Barb:

Awakes from a nap.

Lloyd:

Barb? You fall asleep on me already?

Looks to her with a smile.

Barb:

Gasping for air.

Lloyd:

You alright, babe?

Barb:

Still gasping between words.

I just-I had the worst dream!

Catches her breath while gripping her chest.

Lloyd:

Are you sure you're okay? What happened?

Barb:

We were killed. I-In a car accident… Oh my God… It was terrible, Lloyd.

Lloyd:

You had the dream… again?

They look at each other and Barb nods.

Try and stay awake. We're almost there.

CUT TO THE NEW HOUSE IN PORTLAND.

Lloyd and Barb:

Exit the car.

Barb:

It looks… different.

Lloyd:

Well… It's not a resort.

Barb:

Looks at Lloyd.

Hon, you said it was two stories. You said we were getting a nice cozy house in Southeast Portland.

Lloyd:

This house was cheaper, babe. You won't understand now, but I did it for us.

Barb:

Lloyd, this house… Studio, doesn't have enough room for all of us. Did you consider anybody but yourself when you bought this? Are we supposed to stay at that piece of shit hotel, again? Another night?

Lloyd:

Barb, I'm not arguing with you right now. We can rough it here for a few months. It's not gonna kill us to live a little on the edge of town.

Barb:

This is ridiculous. What the hell kind of job do you have? Moving your family every other season.

Lloyd:

Doesn't respond.

Barb:

Well?

Lloyd:

Let's just go.

Barb:

Wonderful. We get to move again.

Lloyd and Barb drive back to the hotel.

Part 3:

LLOYD AND BARB ARE IN THEIR HOTEL ROOM. LLOYD STANDS AWKWARDLY AS BARB PACKS HER CLOTHES, WHEN PIM ENTERS THE ROOM.

Pim:

Papers signed already?

Barb:

No, sweety. Your father told a bullshit lie again.

Lloyd:

Sternly.

Language, Barb!

Pim:

So, should I be packing.

Barb:

Yes! And go tell your brother we're leaving.

Pim:

… I don't know where he's at. Last I saw he was on the beach with some girl.

Barb:

To Lloyd.

So, you're not the only one keeping secrets from me.

Now Phil's got a girlfriend that he didn't even tell me about.

Barb's vent is interrupted by a knock at the door, Pim opens it. Keely enters with a cart full of fruit and wine.

Keely:

Someone order room service?

Barb:

Wrong room, sweetie.

Lloyd:

I did.

Pim:

Whispers to Barb.

That's her. The beach girl I saw with Phil.

Keely:

White wine and chocolate covered strawberries.

Lloyd:

Thank you.

Hands her money.

There's a tip in there.

Keely:

Aww, thanks, sir.

Turns to leave.

Lloyd:

To Barb.

Honey, I got this for us… Would you like to-

Barb:

Have you seen my son? Phil.

Keely:

Um… no. I don't know of anyone by that name.

Turns to leave again.

Pim:

But I saw you with him. You guys were walking on the beach together, and talking at the reception desk before that.

Keely:

Sorry. I think you have the wrong girl.

Finally leaves.

Barb:

You're sure that was her?

Pim:

Positive. He told me her name… Rain, or Hail, or something like that.

Barb:

That's weird. Why wouldn't he tell me.

Lloyd:

Alright, I've had enough. Pimbie, leave. Go ahead and pack up. Find your brother later.

After Pim leaves, to Barb.

And you….

Pours two glasses of wine, hands one to Barb, and kisses her in attempt to distract her.

Barb:

Pulls away and takes a drink of her wine.

Where do you think Phil is?

Lloyd:

Tries to kiss her again.

Don't worry about it.

Barb:

Okay.

Pulls away again.

I realize he hasn't got curfew for another hour, but aren't you a little worried? I mean, we haven't seen him since this morning, it's almost eleven o' clock.

Walks toward the window.

Lloyd:

He's fine, babe.

Barb:

Looks out the window.

That little bitch. She lied right to my face.

She sees Keely standing outside the hotel with Phil.

Lloyd:

Barb…

Barb:

I'm going down there.

Rushes to the door, grabs her coat, and heads down.

Lloyd:

Once she's gone.

I love you.

CUT TO KEELY AND PHIL OUTSIDE THE HOTEL.

Keely:

Laughing at something Phil said.

You're full of shit!

Phil:

I'm not joking! He was on his knees and-

Barb bursts through the doors, faking a calm expression.

Barb:

Oh… was I interrupting?

Phil:

Turns slightly toward her.

I'll be up in a minute, mom.

Barb:

Say goodbye to your friend, Phil.

Phil:

Looks at his mom a little confused.

Barb:

That means now.

Phil:

I don't have curfew for…

Looks at his watch.

Forty-six minutes.

Barb:

…Fine. We'll have a talk with your father when your curfew comes.

Barb leaves, and Keely looks to Phil. Phil walks down to the pier where Keely follows. They stop at the end where they sit on a bench overlooking the ocean.

Phil:

In confidence as he stares into the night sky.

I hate her sometimes. You know? She treats me like a child, until it's convenient for her. I run errands for her when she's "too tired" to get out of bed. I make dinner for me and Pimbie when she drinks herself into a coma, thinking my dad's not coming home. Can you believe… I even had to lend her money for gas… a couple times actually. She spent the last of her check on a pair of fucking high heels. Worst of all, she's got my dad brainwashed…. He'll back her on anything. Us moving… that was her fault. She bitched at my dad for months about taking a vacation. So much he almost went back to drinking… He cracked, though. Took a week off from his job to satisfy her.

Phil begins to tear up, just a little, and Keely rubs his knee gently.

He lost his job the day he got back. He hasn't even told us yet. I just noticed him out one day, at a bar. I don't think he drank, just looked all the different bottles…. I think my mom got suspicious when he announced we were moving to the United States. Said he had a friend in the north-west.

Attempts a laugh.

You know, he sold his wedding ring over a year ago?

Keely:

What for?

Phil:

An anniversary gift for mom.

Keely:

She hasn't noticed that he hasn't been wearing it?

Phil:

Shakes his head.

Keely:

… I'm sorry… about your situation. I know it must be affecting you and your sister.

Phil:

Finally looks away from the sky, at her.

So how 'bout that special place…

Keely:

What about curfew?

Phil:

Stands up and offers his hand.

What curfew?

Keely:

… Okay, rebel. But I have a favor to ask.

Phil:

What's that?

Keely:

Come on.

Takes his hand and leads him to the special place.

Part 4:

Barb is sitting in Phil's room at 11: 23 PM, waiting and worrying for his return.

Meanwhile, Keely is leading Phil to the special place near the end of Seaside.

Phil:

Do you come up here often?

Keely:

Crosses her arms to keep from getting cold.

Just when I need to get away… From everything, you know?

Phil:

Looks at her shivering.

I wish I'd brought my coat for you.

Keely:

Shakes her head.

I like the feeling. Of the cold. It's refreshing.

Points to the mountain they have arrived at.

We're here.

Phil:

The mountain?

Keely nods and Phil shrugs.

They both begin to walk up the hillside. CUT to arrival. At the top of the small mountain is a bed of grass, very short, but soft. It overlooks the entire ocean and beach. Phil is breathless.

Phil:

This is-

Keely:

Shhh. Just listen.

They both sit in silence for a long while until Phil looks over at Keely, who has fallen asleep. He joins her laying down a few feet away, and falling asleep.

6:25 AM. Barb has woken up in Phil's bed. She's realizes he didn't come home last night, and rushes down stairs to reception where Mandy is sitting, reading a magazine.

Barb:

Excuse me, but have you seen my son? Last night… I-I saw him with this girl… She had-She was blond, and-

Mandy:

Calmly.

My daughter. Yeah, they went out last night. Haven't seen 'em since.

Barb:

Getting impatient.

Do you happen to know where they went?

Mandy:

… No ma'am, I don't.

Keely walks through the front doors.

Keely:

Good morning, Mrs. Diffy. Breakfast isn't served until seven, so-

Barb:

Fakes a laugh.

Cut the crap!

Walks up to Keely.

Where is my son?

Mandy:

Ma'am, she just said breakfast isn't served until seven, so-

Points at a sign near the window that reads NO LOITERING in red.

Barb:

Fast walks to the elevator.

This is just unbelievable.

Just as she's pushing the button, the front door opens. CUE Phil.

Phil:

Hey, mom.

Barb turns toward him.

Barb:

Where the hell have you been?!

Phil:

Nods at Keely and Mandy as he walks over to his mom.

I was on the beach.

Barb:

You have a curfew, Phil! Do you know how worried I was?!

Phil:

Mom, calm down. I'm fine! You see me… I'm alright. Still in one piece.

Barb:

We're leaving first thing next weekend. Until then, I don't want to see you with that girl again! Do you understand me?

Phil:

Fine.

Barb:

Upstairs, now!

The elevator opens and Barb gets in.

Phil:

Just let me get some water first.

The elevator door closes and Barb is screaming Phil's name. Phil walks quickly out the front door, and Keely follows.

Mandy:

Bye, honey! Be back for your shift by noon!

Phil and Keely are running to the parking lot now. They get in Keely's car, and drive.

BACK AT THE HOTEL RECEPTION DESK.

Barb finally gets back down to the reception desk.

Barb:

Where did they go!?

Mandy:

My daughter's shift doesn't start until noon.

Barb gets frustrated and leaves.

CUT to Keely and Phil driving.

Phil:

You had a favor to ask me.

Keely:

That has to do with where we're going… See, I'm taking online courses at U of O, and I have a project due by the end of summer. I need to make a video about a moment in my life, and I figured… you know, you could help me.

Phil:

Sure, I'll help.

Keely:

You know anything about film-making?

Phil:

… A little.

Laughs lightly.

Keely:

Looks over at him.

What?

Phil:

Oh this is embarrassing… I used to make music videos.

Keely:

Let me guess. Rap videos.

Phil:

Silent.

Keely:

You're kidding.

Phil:

My friends and I had just heard Slim Shady for the first time…

Keely:

Laughs.

Phil:

Yeah… real funny. I don't you to laugh yourself into a coma, so I'll keep my skills to myself.

Keely:

Come on, I'm just trying to have a little fun.

Phil:

So, where are we going?

Keely:

You're the film genius, you tell me.

Phil:

Hmmm…. On location?

Keely:

Bingo.

CUT to arrival at the location spot: A field of grass, in the middle of nowhere.

Phil:

Sits criss-cross on the grass.

What moment does this represent?

Keely:

Joins him on the grass.

When I was thirteen I tried to track down my dad. He left before I was born, died two years after. I didn't know that then. Anyway, I found his address online and got on a bus. I got on the wrong bus. Ended up at a park with nothing but grass, and I was completely alone.

Phil:

How'd you get home?

Keely:

Lays back on the grass with her hands behind her head.

The park was, like, a mile away from my house. I just sat in the grass for hours until my mom was driving home from work and saw me. That's the day she told me he was dead.

Phil:

You sure you want to get into that again?

Keely:

It's the only really significant thing that's ever happened to me.

Phil:

Then you're not digging deep enough.

Keely:

Looks at him.

Phil:

Some of those "insignificant" moments you're not thinking of are some of the most important.

Keely:

Looks away from him.

Phil:

Keely…

Keely:

Looks back at him.

Phil:

What was your seventh birthday like?

CUE TIME LAPSE AS KEELY REVEALS MOMENTS IN HER LIFE TO PHIL. CUE SEEDS IN THE GROUND

Phil stands up and offers his hand to Keely.

Phil:

I have an idea.

Pulls her up.

Keely:

For the movie?

Phil:

Nods.

A movie about you making a movie.

Keely:

Like a documentary?

Phil:

Yeah, I could film you talking about making a movie about meeting your dad.

Keely:

That actually sounds… good.

Phil:

Begins to walk to the car with Keely.

It'll be a little adventure. Since I'm no longer "allowed" to see you.

Keely:

Gets in.

Your mom is… something else.

Closes the door.

CUT back to Barb in her hotel room waiting for Phil.

Barb:

He's never done this to me before.

Lloyd:

Barb, can we talk?

Barb:

Doesn't look away from the window.

What is it Lloyd?

Lloyd:

…Do you still love me?

Barb:

Finally looks from the window.

What kind of a question is that? Of course I do, Lloyd.

Walks over to him.

Lloyd:

We haven't talked in weeks, babe. I miss you.

Gets up to embrace her.

Barb:

… It's just Phil. We've been here two days and he's turned into…

Tears up.

Lloyd:

He's seventeen, Barb. Give him some space.

Barb:

This girl he's with… She lies. She's such a bad influence.

Lloyd:

Strokes her back.

You don't know her, Barb.

CUT to Keely and Phil driving home. CUE Overdrive on the radio.

Phil:

Checks his watch.

Already 11:09.

Keely:

You serious?

Phil:

Displays his watch for her.

Keely:

Shit!

Speeds down the road.

Phil:

Grips his seat.

What the hell are you doing?!

Keely:

Smiling happily.

I have a shift in less than an hour! I can't be late!

Phil:

Looks at the speed-o-meter, which read 95 mph in a 60 mph zone.

You're crazy!

Keely:

I'm efficient!

Laughs.

Part 5:

Pim is hanging out by the pool when she sees Phil stumble out of a car with Keely.

Keely:

Thanks for coming with me today.

Phil:

I had fun… Minus the barf-inducing ride home.

Rubs his stomach.

Keely:

Laughs.

…Really, though. I appreciate the company. We don't get a lot of guys like you around here.

Phil:

Guys like me?

Keely:

Guys that listen… Really listen.

Awkward silence.

I should go… I have a shift in five.

Phil:

Nods.

Keely:

Begins to walk away.

Phil:

When should I bring my camera?

Keely:

Walks backwards.

Tonight.

Turns back around.

Meet me in the staff lounge.

Keely enters the hotel and Phil watches her leave, just as Pim approaches him.

Pim:

I thought mom said you weren't supposed to see her.

Phil:

Still looking through the hotel doors.

What she doesn't know won't hurt her, right?

Looks at Pim.

Are you gonna tell?

Pim:

Taps her chin wondrously.

… Haven't decided.

Phil:

Digs through his pockets and pulls out a twenty dollar bill.

Here.

Hands it to her.

CUT to Pim in her hotel room. She is watching television, when her mother walks in.

Barb:

Hey, sweetie. How was the pool?

Pim:

Cold.

Barb:

Did you see your brother down there?

Pim:

Looks at the twenty dollar bill on her dresser.

Nope.

Barb:

Oh… I was just wondering.

Picks a jacket up off the floor and lays it down on Pim's bed.

If you see him around just let me know.

Pim:

Looks from the TV to her mom.

Okay…

Barb leaves the room and leans her back against the door, taking a deep breath.

CUT to Keely in the lobby, as Mandy walks in from a break.

Mandy:

So… how was your date?

Keely:

Drops a magazine she was skimming through.

It wasn't a date.

Looks at Mandy.

But… I had a good time.

Mandy:

Studies Keely for a second.

Keely:

What?

Mandy:

Do you still have those condoms I gave you?

Keely:

Sees a customer walking by, staring at them both.

Mom!

Whispers to her.

You couldn't save that for, I don't know, never?!

Mandy:

Don't evade the question, young lady. You're eighteen years old, I worry.

Keely:

Really, mom? I'm not sleeping with him…

Mandy:

Mother has a right to know.

Runs her fingers through Keely's hair.

…You like him?

Keely:

…No.

Looks down at her magazine.

Mandy:

Pauses for a while.

Well… okay. Listen, tonight after your shift, I need you to go over the payroll.

Keely:

I can't… I'm… Uh…Busy.

Mandy:

Doing what?

Keely:

Filming my project…

Whispers.

With Phil.

Mandy:

Looks back at her.

What was that?

Keely:

Nothing, mom. I'll do it first thing tomorrow.

Mandy:

Alright, honey. Don't forget to give Liam his check, okay?

Keely:

Mhmm.

Part 6:

CUT to Phil going down to the staff lounge in the elevator.

Phil:

Checks his breath and searches his pockets.

Where did you go, tic tacs?

Elevator door opens and Phil is still searching his pockets. Liam, the guy on shift, gives him a weird look.

Phil waves at him and heads to the staff lounge. He hears music coming from it, and slowly opens the door.

Keely, eyes closed, is playing Beautiful Girl and singing along.

…Wow.

Keely:

Gasps and stops playing.

You're early.

Phil:

That was… incredible.

Keely:

… I got off my shift early… you weren't supposed to be here-

Phil:

I didn't know you could sing…

Keely:

Are we gonna film this thing, or…

Phil:

And you play guitar…

Keely:

Where is your camera?

Phil:

With a goofy grin on his face.

I am so fascinated by you right now.

Keely:

Dammit, Phil! Shut up!

Phil:

Smiles widely.

Keely:

Looks at him smiling.

Stop it…

Phil:

Continues to smile.

Keely:

Grabs her guitar.

Forget it.

Gathers the rest of her things to leave.

Phil:

I have to get you on camera, playing that guitar.

Keely:

…Forget it. I'm not letting you hear me sing again.

Phil:

Stands in front of the door.

You can't leave until I film you… So, say something.

Pulls out his camera and turns it on, facing her.

How about we start with your basics…

Keely:

Reluctant at first.

… My name is Keely Vera Teslow, daughter to Mandy Teslow and Harland Harris Teslow, born April fourth, 1993…

Phil:

And your parents… are they still together?

Keely:

My dad found out about me and split. Good for the self-esteem, huh?

Laughs lightly.

Phil:

Have you seen him since?

Keely:

I attempted to… when I was thirteen.

Phil:

Did things go as you planned?

Keely:

I planned to surprise him at his house. I yellow-paged him and wrote down the address. Got on a bus one day and ended up at a city park, all by myself…

Phil:

So you didn't meet him?

Keely:

No… instead, my mom passed the park I was at on her way home. We spent three hours talking about him, but all I heard was "Keely… your father's dead."

Phil:

How'd you r
