girl, ANNIE, is curled up in her room reading a book and eating
from a bowl of candy. There is a lamp shining down on her. A few
moments of silence pass then there is a knock at the door. Her
MOTHER enters with a phone behind her back and a smile on her
up, "oh my gosh," scrambling to put the book and candy down, and
grabs the phone. She realizes that she has a candy in her mouth
and spits it out.)
comes up on a cocky teenage boy, SAM, lounging on a couch, phone
pressed to his ear.)
Hi, Annie? It's
Hey! How are
I'm doin' good .
So, uh, that was
your mom, huh? She was nice but I totally just started talking to
her like she was you . . .
Oh! I'm sorry!
She took my phone away so I had to give you my home number . . .
guess I should have warned you . . .
Not much. I was
just, you know, wondering if you had a good time at homecoming
Yeah! It was a
lot of fun! I can't believe those guys who cut in on our dance,
though! They were so rude!
Yeah . . . So,
uh, would you, perhaps . . . um, want to do something with me
(A moment of
Oh! Um . . .
yeah! I would love to!
Ok, cool. I was
thinking maybe we could go out to eat and then see a movie
Cool, see ya
next Friday then!
Yup! See you
up and leans back into the couch satisfied with
. . . oh! Wait,
what time. . . ? . . . Darn! And I don't know his number. . . But
aaahhhhh!!!!!!! Oh my gosh I can't believe it he actually called!
I thought for sure he wouldn't! Danielle is going to
a number as she finishes her line then paces impatiently as the
phone rings four times. A spot comes up on DANIELLE as she
scribbles down something on a worksheet and then closes it in a
text book, finished. She then picks up the phone.)
dramatic effect, then rushes her words together)
I have a date
What? . .
Ahhhh!!!!! Oh my
gosh are you serious? With who? Since when? Where are you going?
And what about Kory? Does this mean you're over him? I demand to
know absolutely EVERY juicy little detail!!!
No need to
demand! We have been friends since elementary school, after all!
We tell each other everything, right?
Ok, so you
remember that guy I met at homecoming? The one that was there
with his friends and that was sooo cute and adorable and funny?
And basically glued himself to my side the whole time and then
danced with me at the end? Well . . . he just called
ANNIE's description DANIELLE's smile and excitement slowly fade
until she looks depressed.)
Oh! I'm so happy
for you! What did he say? . . . Come on! . . .Details!
Um, lets see . .
. he like JUST called me, not even five minutes ago and asked me
out! But oh my gosh it was really embarrassing! You know how my
mom took my phone away until I get my grade in physics up? And
how I had to give Sam my home phone? Well, my mom answered the
phone and he thought it was me and started talking to her because
I didn't tell him I gave him my home phone! But, I have been
freaking out all weekend waiting for him to call and I was
convinced that he wouldn't but . . . ahh!!!! He did! There's
nothing much to tell about the phone call, though. Pretty much
all that happened was he asked me out and I said yes!
You are sooo
lucky! I wish I had a guy like that ask me out . . . But anyways
. . . What about Kory then? Does this mean you're finally giving
up on him?
. . . yeah. . .
I guess. I mean, I still like him . . . a lot . . . but I don't
think anything is going to happen. He made that clear when he
never showed up for what was supposed to be our first date . . .
so I figured, why not? It's not like I have anything to lose
right? And Sam IS cute!
continued fake enthusiasm)
I'm so excited
for you! Do I get to help you pick out what you're going to wear?
Or have you already decided? What about Erica? Have you told her
No, I don't have
any idea of what I'm going to wear, yet! He only called like five
minutes ago! And of course I need your help! And I haven't called
Erica yet but, of course, she should help too!!!! I'm going to
need all the help I can get . . . !
Aw, that's not
true! You're adorable!
Thanks, but I've
never been on a real date before! I have no idea what to
Oh, I'm sure it
will be fine! You gonna tell Kory?
Um . . . I don't
know. I guess I should, shouldn't I. We're like best friends but
it just seems weird . . . Especially since we both liked each
other before, or at least I thought we both liked each other . .
. I guess I was wrong, huh?
But you two tell
each other EVERYTHING!
I know . . . but
I mean it's just a date . . . it's not that big a deal . . .
Well, you tell
him if you want to. I would if I was you but . . . it's up to
you! But I, uh, I have to get to work on my physics homework, I
haven't even started!
holds up her finished homework and looks at it.)
Oh, yeah, I
should really start working on my homework too. Ugh. Well, I'll
see you tomorrow then!
up. DANIELLE stuffs her homework in her bag and runs off stage.
ANNIE sets the phone down on her desk and flops down onto her bed
with a groan.)
Oh, what am I
going to do?!
at school, in the commons area. There are lunch tables set up
around the room and students milling about. It is before school.
ANNIE enters juggling her books, bag, and coat. DANIELLE, ERICA,
KORY, and some other students are hanging out at a table
(Runs up to
Oh my gosh
congratulations!!! Danielle just told me! That's so
ERICA an awkward hug through her stuff and KORY walks towards
Ahh! I know! I'm
So . . . you
have a date next Friday.
Um . . .
That's great! .
. . But . . . why didn't you tell me when we talked last
seems pleased with herself)
Ooo! You're in
shoots DANIELLE a glare then turns back to KORY. ERICA looks
I . . . I don't
And to find out
from Danielle of all people!
(Sarcastically, with fake
I'm sorry . . .
I was going to tell you! But it never seemed like a good time to
mention it . . .
She didn't tell
Kory that she got a date and he had to find out from me.
So? I found out
from you and I don't have a problem with it.
See? It's no big
deal. Can we just forget this?
rings to go to class.)
ERICA walk away and ANNIE mutters to DANIELLE as she walks
You knew that
was going to happen!
What did I
DANIELLE and ANNIE walk off stage in opposite
(The scene opens
in the cafeteria, same set as the commons, ANNIE and KORY enter
stage right talking.)
So . . . where's this
Sam guy taking you?
I don't know, out to
It had better be nice
. . .
Yeah . . . but
anyway, how are you?
Happy for you.
Yeah, why wouldn't I
I don't know. You
just didn't sound like it, is all.
Oh . . . well, I
Ok . . .
Um . . . I have to go
. . . talk to Jared. See ya.
(ANNIE sits down
at one of the tables and hangs her head in her hands. DANIELLE is
already sitting on the other side of the table and had been
listening to the whole conversation.)
Wow. He REALLY likes
you, doesn't he?
What? Oh. No. No, he
Yes. Yes, Annie he
does. He is soooo depressed by the idea that you might be moving
on! Can't you see it in his eyes? The flat tone in his voice? The
droop of his shoulders and hang of his head? He's a horrible
liar. You even caught him yourself!
Don't. Please, he
already had his chance. Obviously he doesn't care for me all that
much or he wouldn't have left me hanging.
yourself! He's madly in love with you! But, hey, if you don't
want him anymore, I'm sure he'll get over you . . . sometime,
after nights of crying himself to sleep. You never know, he might
even consider killing himself but I'm sure . . .
Oh! Well, I've got
to get moving. Unlike you, I don't have first lunch. Talk to ya
Yeah . . .
over, with a lunch tray in her hand, there is food on it, and
sits down next to ANNIE.)
Hey! Ok, so you have
to tell me absolutely everything! How did it happen? When EXACTLY
did Sam ask you out? Where's he going to take . . .
Ugh! Why does it
matter so much to everyone? Can't you people just leave me
offstage and ERICA sits there in shock, her fork halfway to her
mouth. In a delayed reaction, she stands and runs after
(ANNIE is sitting
in a bathroom stall crying when ERICA rushes in. She hesitates
then knocks on the stall door.)
Annie? What's wrong?
Go away! It doesn't
matter, nothing does. Everything is all messed up.
That's not true! I'm
sure we can fix it but you have to tell me what's wrong or I
can't help much.
respond and ERICA hesitantly swings open the door to find ANNIE
hunched over, head in hands, and shoulders shaking with silent
Hey, talk to me. Come
on, it can't be that bad!
Does he still like
(Sits up and
looks at ERICA; forcefully)
Does he still like
mistake and tries to cover it up)
Oh! Um . . . well . .
. I wouldn't know exactly. It's not like he talks to . . .
Oh! I hate this! I
can't do anything right!
What are you talking
about?!? HE is the one who can't do anything right! You've waited
for him, listened to him, shown him you care, TOLD him you care,
stood up for him, accepted his excuses, made up excuses for him .
. . !
Stop! Ok! I get it! .
. . I get it. I know all of that already. You and everyone else
have told me plenty of times and just . . . stop! Don't anymore.
Ok? I won't listen to "reason" and there are plenty of things
I've done wrong, too! . . . plenty . . .
Ok, I'm sorry. It's
just . . . hard watching you suffer like this.
But hey! You have a
date this Friday! Maybe you'll actually get over Kory! Maybe
you'll like this other guy! Maybe . . .
That's a lot of
maybes . . .
I know, but it's time
you took a chance and got out there. What do you say?
Yeah, I guess you're
right. I mean, what have I got to lose right?
There's the spirit!
Now, come on. Let's go get you something to eat.
That sounds like a
good idea to me.
(They exit; arms
linked together, ERICA enthusiastically dragging the depressed
(The scene opens
in a busy hallway between classes. ERICA enters stage right and
KORY enters stage left, head hanging and looking depressed. They
meet center stage, students continue walking around and past them
to their classes. ERICA grabs KORY's arm and stops him from
walking past her. He hadn't seen her.)
Hey! Dude! What are
Come on. You so
obviously like her! Like, really like her! Just ask Annie out
already! Just the idea of her going out with another guy is
No. She's happy about
this guy. I messed up, there's no way she likes me anymore,
anyway. She should hate me.
But she doesn't, now
does she? And you don't know she doesn't like you, too.
Yes . . . Yes, I
And how do you know
Well, why would
Honestly? I have no
idea! The way you're acting, all sorry for yourself, I can't see
why anyone would want to go out with you! Come on! Have
(ERICA gives him
a slap on the back.)
But seriously, come
on, lover boy! Go get her! Trust me on this. She likes you,
away; exits stage left.)
What am I supposed to
up behind him, from stage left.)
Pst! Kory! I'm going
to spy on Annie on her date this Friday! Wanna come? Of course,
we still have to work out the logistics . . . like figuring out
where they are going, for instance . . . but once we figure out
those minor details it'll be A LOT of fun! What do you
What? No, I won't go
with you! That's horrible! And don't you dare go spy on her! What
if she catches you? What if you mess everything up? This is her
first date EVER! If you go through with this crazy plot of yours
and you ruin her evening I'll . . . well, I'll find you and make
you wish you'd never thought about it!
Jeeze! Chill! I won't
ruin things . . . too badly!
(KORY glares at
her; she laughs)
Well, suit yourself!
I AM going, though. This is too good to miss! At least I know
I'll have fun this Friday! Unlike you, who will be sitting at
home worrying about whether this new guy's going to steal Annie's
(Gets all worked
What? Her first kiss?
No! Who does he think he is trying to . . . !!!
Oh! Well, I've got to
be getting to class! See ya around!
But . . . no! Wait .
. . I can't!
(KORY droops in
defeat as DANIELLE disappears off stage. He exits stage
(KORY is sitting
with his head and his back leaning against a locker in the
hallway after school. No one else is around except a few students
casually passing by. There is a notebook and pencil in his lap
and a pile of crumpled papers next to him. He looks back down at
the notebook and, after a deep sigh, begins to
Annie, your eyes are
like the sparkling ocean, so deep and full of mystery. Your hair
is like . . . is like . . . oh, what is the point? This is so
cheesy, and it's not like I'm going to give it to her anyway.
Annie's going to go out with that Sam guy, now. Whoever he is . .
(As KORY is
speaking SAM and a few other guys, jocks, are walking by. SAM
stops when he hears his and, after ushering his friends on
without him, goes over to KORY. SAM leans up against the lockers
next to KORY.)
So . . . you know
Annie? Couldn't help overhearing your little outburst
Yeah . . .
Got a little bit of a
crush on 'er, by the sound of it.
Yeah, I . . .
You writing her a
poem, then? Mind if I take a look?
for an answer, SAM reaches down and takes the notebook out of
