Katie’s head hung limp as the man forced her to walk to her to her death. Her eyes were closed for she had admitted defeat. Her hands were tied behind her back. She stopped and stood at the edge of the cliff.
“Any last words miss Jones?” Katie shook her head and jumped. The ground rushed toward her, the air blew all around her. Her hair whipped her face. The ground came closer and closer, then…and then…
“Hello, earth to Jenny. Wake up!” I snapped out of my daydream and back to reality.
“Kayla, why did you bring me back? I was getting to the best part.”
Kayla laughed, “I brought you back because the bell rang two minutes ago and we are going to be late.”
I raised my eyebrows, “Really? Wow, I don’t think I’ve slipped that far before oh well. I guess we should go to the boring class and get this boring day started.” We got up and walked to our first period class. I walked in and sat down in my corner at the back and class started.
Halfway through the class a boy came through the door, “Um, are you Ms. Tailor?” my breath caught in my throat, I knew that voice, but it couldn’t be, could it? No, it’s impossible. I turned my head to see a boy with light brown hair and sparkling blue eyes. His, sparking with interest, met mine, wide with shock, for the slightest moment before I whipped my head around and stared at my English book.
Ms. Tailor nodded, “And who are you?”
“My name is Cameron, I just transferred, here’s my schedule.”
Ms. Tailor looked at the piece of paper, “This looks exactly like Jenny’s.” I could sense that he had suddenly stopped moving, he knew the name, he recognized my face, my eyes.
He walked over to me, sitting quietly trying to hide behind my book. “Katie?”
I cursed silently and lifted my head to look at him, “Hey Cam.”
His eyes went wide, “Wow, you look…Um…” I laughed in my head as he took in my used to be blonde but now black hair, my heavy eyeliner and blood red lips. “You look different.”
I laughed arrogantly, “Yeah no duh. So Why are you here?”
“Foster parents live around the corner, when did this happen?”
I glared at him, how could he ask such a stupid question, “When do you think? Ever since you and your dad and that stupid truck of yours left I’ve been slipping into fits of depression every so often. And my name isn’t Katie.”
Ms. Tailor looked confused, “Jenny, you know Cameron?”
Now Cam looked confused, “Jenny? I knew you’ve always loved that name but I never thought you would change it.”
I sighed, “Yes Ms. Tailor sadly I know Cameron, and yes Cam I changed my name but only in hope of you never finding me. Katie is gone, she doesn’t exist, she’s a character in my imagination, and if it weren’t for you coming back she would still be there!” I grabbed the edge of my desk, trying to stop myself from either punching him or crying. “Ms. Tailor may I please go for a walk around the school?” Ms. Tailor examined my face for a moment before nodding. I ran out the door and down the hall.
In the class Cameron was shaking his head, “Miss, can I go after her, because until we talk this class is never going to work?” She nodded and he ran out the door after me.
Katie was standing at the edge at the cliff.
“Any last words Ms. Jones?” she shook her head and jumped. Again, the ground came closer and closer, the hair whipping her face as she fell. She was so close to the ground, the air was coming so fast she could hardly breathe. At any second she would surely be dead. She said a prayer, she…she…
I blinked and looked up frustrated, “Can’t you people let me die before bringing me back to reality?” Then I realized who it was. “Oh, go away.”
Cam chuckled slightly, “You’re not getting rid of me that easily, besides, we need to talk.”
I rolled my eyes, “And if I don’t? What are you going to call your dad to kidnap me again?”
He smiled, “Hey, just remember that you had fun when you were stuck with us.”
I sighed, remembering the past, “That was a long time ago.” I started to have a flashback.
Katie struggled to get away to no avail, the boy had her pinned down.
“Come on Katie,” he said, “you can’t get away just say it.”
She shook her head, “No way, I’m not letting you win.” He laughed quietly, pushing her hands above her head. He leaned down and kissed her lips softly. “Ok,” she said breathlessly when they separated, “You win.”
He put his arm around my shoulder, and I came back to reality “No matter how long ago it was I still feel the same now as I did then.” I pushed off his arm and pushed farther into the corner, hiding my face away in my hands. “Hey, if you don’ talk to me things are going to get worse. I guarantee it.”
I turned my face and glared at him, “How could it get any worse? I finally got over the fact that I was left for dead on my parent’s doorstep after a year of being gone. I just got over that, I moved on and then you show up and I’m back to not knowing a god damn thing. Why won’t you just go away!” I jumped up and tried to run but Cam was always faster than I was and caught me easily. He took my waist and tried to hold me still, but I was always stronger than he was and I easily got away.
I whipped around to face him, “I’m not Katie! Katie is gone and she’s never coming back. I’m Jenny, you don’t know me, and you never will!” I turned and ran again and this time Cameron just stood there, watching me run with eyes filled with sadness, but I never looked back, I kept on running until I got home. I sat on my bed and cried, why did he have to come back? Why was he doing this to me? I took out my phone and looked through my contacts until I found Kayla.
‘Hey Kayla can u bring my stuff 2 my place after school?’
‘Thanks.’ I put my phone back in my pocket and kept crying. For the rest of the day all I did was cry, read, and try not to get leaking eyeliner on the pages. I eventually gave up on the book, because my eyeliner was ruining it.
Katie slowly woke up from being forced into unconsciousness. She was groggy and in coherent as she observed her surroundings. She was tied to a chair in a dull gray room. Beside her there was a bed and another chair. But what she didn’t notice was that there was a boy sitting in the chair beside her. When she finally noticed she jumped and whimpered. The boy pulled out a knife and approached.
“Hey, calm down, it’s ok.” He cut the ropes around her wrist. “I’m sorry my dad has a bad habit of overdoing things like this, but don’t worry you’ll be home in no time. My name is Cam, what’s yours?”
“M-my name is Katie. Why am I here?”
Cam sighed, “My dad has a bit of a problem with his head, and has no money to pay it, but it should be on his benefits plan at work but they took it off last minute. In his mind this solves the problem no matter what happens; if he goes to jail he gets help, if he doesn’t the ransom will pay it.”
“But that doesn’t make sense; if he wanted to get it back he could just try and sue the person he works for.”
He sighed, “That’s what I told him but he doesn’t want to listen. And I have to warn you, he is a bit abusive toward me and I don’t know about you, but I will do everything I can to protect you.”
She looked away, “I want to go home.” She whimpered.
He put his arm around her shoulder, “I know, I’ll get you out of here, I promise.”
Then there was a knock on the door that pulled me out of my flashback. When Kayla walked through the door she only took half a second to take in my streaming eyeliner mixed with tears and she ran to my side.
I let her hug me, “You know when I went missing for a year, and then I turned up and told you where I was and who I was with and why I was back?”
She nodded, “Yes, you said you were kidnapped and that you met this wonderful person but they brought you back and left, that’s why you got so depressed.” I nodded, “So, why are you bringing it up? I don’t understand.”
I sighed, “Do you remember that wonderful, awful person’s name?”
I nodded, “And did you know there is a new kid at school?”
She looked at me with a ‘no duh’ expression, “Yah, Cameron, he’s so cute and…” her face fell when it clued in. “Is he…? I nodded. “Oh my gosh, Jenny I had no idea I…”
I shook my head, “It’s not your fault; it didn’t clue in. But the reason I’m crying is because he’s trying to get me back and I don’t know what to.” I broke down into more tears, I would’ve thought I’d run out by know.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay. You’ll figure it out, I know you will. Now, how about we clean off your eyeliner and go get some ice cream?”
I laughed suddenly, “When in doubt get Ben and Jerry?”
Kayla laughed with me, “you bet.” I went into my washroom and cleaned off my face. I was about to reapply with my usual eyeliner when I decided against it and reached for the water proof bottle. Kayla and I walked to the store and bought a tub of vanilla ice cream and four two liter bottles of root-beer. We walked back to my house and made a dozen root-beer floats each, watching one of our favorite movies. By the time the movie was over we had drank all the root-beer and ice cream.
Kayla looked over at me, “You feeling better?” I nodded, “You alright to go to school tomorrow?”
I shrugged, “I don’t think I really have a choice.”
She smiled and gave me a hug, “I think you’ll be ok, I should be getting home. I’ll see you tomorrow ok?” I nodded and watched as she walked out the door.
The next day at school I was sitting in class, waiting for ‘you know who’ to come in the door. When he did he glanced at me and then went to sit at the other side of the room. Class continued as normal but when the bell rang, as I was trying to run out the door, he approached me and put a hand on my shoulder. I shoved it off and tried to walk away but when I heard his voice I couldn’t move.
“Kat…Jenny, I know you don’t want to talk to me and that’s ok just take this.” He handed me a piece of paper and walked out of the class room. I stared down at the paper; it was folded into three like a letter. I unfolded it and read
‘My Dear Katie,
I’m so sorry for what I’m about to do. My father is beginning to get frustrated with us, and I fear for you getting hurt. Please forgive me for this, but I must leave you here. My father needs help and I’m going to get it for him but it will be dangerous. I will come back for you someday, and until that please know that I still love you dearly.
My eyes filled with tears, as I looked at the date, Monday October 23rd 2007, the day I was left sleeping on my parent’s front step. He had left me to keep me safe, he had said he would come back, he still loved me. I ran to my next class, Cam was in this class as well. Instead of going to my corner at the back I took a seat beside Cam, he looked surprised as he noticed that my eyeliner had started to stream down my cheek. He smiled knowing I had read the letter.
I looked down and wiped my face with my hands, they came off black and I cursed myself for not using my waterproof eyeliner. I took a piece of paper out of my book and scribbled barely readable words onto it. ‘Can we talk at lunch…alone? There’s a park just across the street.’ I passed it across our desk; he took it and read it. A minute later the paper was pushed against my hand, I looked down at it. ‘Sure and thank you.’ I smiled and waited for the bell to ring. When it did I grabbed my lunch and walked across the street to see that Cam was already there.
“How did you get here so fast? Your locker is on the other end of the school.”
He shrugged, “If I told you that would mean you could find a way to beat me here next time.”
I laughed, “Next time? Who said I’m coming back?”
He shrugged again, “I don’t know, me?” then he got an idea and pushed me onto the grass, pinning me down.
I looked shocked, “What are you…?”
“Don’t you remember the first time you tried to run away?”
“Let me go!” Katie screamed, “Just leave me alone!” She pushed the boy onto the ground and ran. The boy grabbed her foot and scrambled to get on top of her, pinning her down.
“Katie please, it’s going to be ok, it’s going to be fine. If you run away now my dad will just go back and get you again and I won’t be able to stop him. Katie please just listen to me, everything will be ok I won’t let anything happen to you.”
I stopped struggling to get away and looked him in the eye. He stared right back, “You do remember?”
I sighed, “Yes I do remember, you pinned me down and started talking to me, saying comforting things to me and telling me it was going to be alright, that you wouldn’t let your dad hurt me. And I remember that I started to trust you after that.”
He smiled, “Now do you see what I’m doing?”
I nodded, “You’re trying to get me to trust you again.” He smiled and lay down beside me in the grass. “Cam, why didn’t you give me the letter, that day when you left me?”
He sighed, “I tried to, but my dad stole it away before I could give it to you. And I still mean every word that was written.” I rolled over and looked him in the eye, I could see he meant it.
I lay my head on his chest, “I know, and I believe you, and Cam?”
He stroked my hair gently, “Yes?”
“All those things I said yesterday, before I left, I didn’t…”
“It’s ok Jenny.”
“Katie.” I said.
“What?” Cam sounded confused.
“You can call me Katie, but only you.”
He smiled and kissed me gently, “I love you Katie, and I will never leave you again.”
