"When have you ever heard of a guy who isn't afraid of commitment," Carmen Harris sighed, pointing a manicured french tip at an unsettled Sage Lincoln.
"I can name a few," I spoke, and Carmen rolled her eyes.
"Derek doesn't count, he's practically gay, he doesn't know what he's getting himself into. It's Easy A all over again." I scowled at my best friend, but went back to eating my pizza. "Sage, look, Stanley isn't going to show he cares if you just bounce back after every time he knocks you down and land right on his d-"
"Thank you love guru," I interrupted.
"You get the point," Carmen said.
"So what do I do?" Sage frowned.
"Distance your self, make him jealous by hanging around other guys, flirt with other guys. If he still doesn't give a shit, dump the jerk." Carmen shrugged. I honestly felt bad for Sage, Carmen never made sense until it was in the moment of heat, and I had a feeling this would all blow up in Sage's face in the end. Numbly, Sage rose to her feet and walked away, off to find Stanley.
"Your an ass, you know that right?" I questioned, and Carmen gave me her mischievous smirk.
"Which is exactly why you love me," she said and turned towards me. "So what is up with you and Derek anyway?"
"Which is exactly the problem," Carmen cried. "Nothing saucy or sexually intense happens between you two! You're like two brick walls having dry sex."
"You're awfully colorful today," I noted on her constant sexual references.
"I haven't gotten any in nearly a month, so-"
"You've turned into a horny rabbit?" I concluded, making Carmen frowned.
"Sage is the nice one, remember that," she playfully glared.
"I'm so scared," I mockingly told her, making her laugh, and I followed suit.
"Seriously though," Carmen said recovering. "Derek hasn't made a good move since, what? Junior high?"
"Your point?" I grimaced.
"The clock is ticking, this is our senior year. Do you seriously want to be stuck with stick to the routine, or do you want someone that's unpredictable," she inquired. "When was the last time you went to a party?"
"So what if Derek's not your vision, he's practical and proficient, and I like him very much."
"I'm sorry, I dozed off, what was that?" Carmen yawned, I sighed rolling my eyes at my annoying best friend. I rose to my feet and gathered my things as I headed for the trash bin. "All I'm trying to say is maybe you and Derek shouldn't be together, there's nothing special between you too and you're both just leading each other on."
"I think that's enough love guru for the day, see you in second period," I snarled, and turned on my heel and marched away.
"You can't try to look mad when you just look like a kitten, no one will take you seriously!" Carmen yelled after me, humor laced in between. I shook my head and walked faster.
I stormed into my first class which was English, and I huffed as I slid into my seat, and yanked out my notebook and pen. I was early, one of the three people in the class, but I didn't mind. I liked the quietness of it. I glanced back to see the other two were a girl and a guy, the girl was Amelia that I knew, and I guess the guy was Brett? Amelia looked up and waved, I waved back and turned back towards the front. I attempted to get some calculus work done but Carmen's words plagued me, "you're both just leading each other on."
"She doesn't know what she's talking about," I grumbled.
That afternoon Derrick came over and the two of us watched a movie together, calm and peaceful. We watched Letters to Juliet, and then Derek said he had to get home since it was a school night, to my dismay, and he left. The moment I shut the door Carmen called.
"What?" I sighed.
"Let me guess, you were with Derek," she said smugly.
"He made a dumb excuse and he left, didn't he?" I stiffened.
"Are you in my house?" I frowned.
"One of two things are happening here," she said ignoring my question. "Either he's seeing someone else, or he really is gay."
"Or tonight really is a school night and he had an English paper to finish," I stated.
"You're so gullible, it's dangerous," she cooed in a patronizing manner. "I'm going to prove that Derek is cheat on you, just watch."
"Actually, I think I'm just going to go to bed," I shrugged, though I knew she couldn't see it.
"You're impossible Belle Carter, absolutely fucking impossible." Carmen scoff, and I ended the call, climbing up my stairs and going to my room. My mom was out doing the night shift at the hospital's ER, so she probably wouldn't be home until tomorrow morning, or the night after. Sometimes she wouldn't come home for days, especially during holidays, so it was usually just Carmen, Derek, Evangeline, and me. Evangeline was my twenty-three year old sister who was off at college, so now it was just me stuck at home alone, but I didn't mind, I was use to it.
I shut my door, and turned on the light, stripping off my shirt and pants and trading them for a pair of black pajama shorts, and a Spongebob tanktop. I turned towards my window and froze.
My neighbor, the Sterling's, had lived by us for years and not once did we ever cross paths, and in the room across mine had been vacant and empty for the past three years after they're second oldest son, Jael, was arrested and sent away to a group home for delinquent kids. But I found that not only was the light on and the curtains up, but I found myself staring at a much older, much hotter, and much creepier Jael Sterling. And he'd just seen me in my underwear.
It didn't take much to recognize Jael even though it'd been years since anyone had seen him, but there was only one person who had those pure electric blue eyes, and that was Jael. No one else in his family had those blue eyes, that tan skin, and jet black hair that made his eyes even more noticeable. The rest of his family were pale, with honey blond hair and dark forest green eyes. Jael had always stood out.
I was shell shocked as I stared at my previous neighbor, he indeed had changed extremely. Jael had left as a skinny emo kid, who blared rock music and blocked everyone out. He had been kept to himself, but word had it he snuck out and did other things during the night. And after being involved in a raid down at the abandoned warehouse and being caught with drugs, Jael had been shipped off to Florida. Now he wasn't that skinny kid anymore. To start with, Jael was huge from what I could see. He was all muscle, the black v-neck he wore tight against his bulging muscles. He had sleeves of tattoos up each arm, and crawling across his exposed chest. His lip was pierces, his hair long and wavy in his eyes. His face was of a models, chiseled to an absolute adonis perfection. The wind was knocked out me, and Jael narrowed his eyes. Quickly I hurried over to the window. He quirked an eyebrow, awaiting me to say something and I did.
"Fucking pervert!" I yelled, and snapped my blinds down. I huffed, holding my hands to my chest. Jael Sterling was back. He was back, and he was bad. My hands quivered as I went to my mirror. Did he recognize me? Of course not, Belle, Jael never even knew you existed, my conscious scoffed. I mean, I didn't look all that different from freshman year.
My wavy brown hair fell to the bottom of my rib cage, and sure my figure had filled out into curves, but everyones did. My brown eyes were light, my face clear of makeup and my skin was pale. I didn't have anything special about me, no beauty marks, nothing to distinguish me from any other girl. I sighed, trying to shake the fear of being spied on out of my system.
"Come on Belle, big game tomorrow, and your cheer captain," I told my self in the mirror. "You're going to need to save all your nerves and energy."
With that, I crawled into bed, but I didn't fall asleep until nearly two in the morning.
