I was just the cheerleader…now I'm the wife
By Rachael Pickard
I saw him dribbling across the court; he looked so amazing in his uniform. The way he moved through the opposing team before the basketball went through the hoop. He turned and high fived his team, I watched him as I sat on the bench. I never thought he would notice me because I am a cheerleader of the opposing team. I watched him wrap his arms around a girl who was wearing his jersey jacket; I stood up as the game ended his team winning.
I waited around until everyone left the court going to change as Andrew was just throwing his stuff into his gym bag, not bothering to change. "You look good in your uniform Leanna" My head shot up as he spoke, he was standing in front of me. I blushed bright red and stood up, watching him as he held out the basketball to me.
"You play?" I shook my head but took the ball, walking onto the court as he followed behind me before standing behind me, putting his arms around me. His hands rested on top of mine as they held the ball. "Just look at the basket and focus, when you're ready, throw it" He whispers in my ear as I followed what he said and threw it up. The ball bounced around the rim of the basket before dropping through, bouncing on the court before it stopped bouncing and rolled off the court.
He spun me around to face him, his hands slid down to my waist. "You're a natural, you should come play with us Lions during practice, show us your skills on the court instead of at the side" I heard a cough and stepped away from him as I moved swiftly, collecting my bag and walking out.
It had been a month since I had that moment with Andrew; I smiled at the thought as I threw the basketball through my hoop in my backyard before spinning round as I heard cars pulling up into my driveway. I jumped the gate and saw Andrew, with his team.
"We had hoped we could practice here" He smiles and comes round the back. We spent hours playing basketball with his team, having a great time. I ran inside to get some hot drinks as the sun starts to set, the air getting chilly.
Andrew put his jersey around me and hugs me to his side as we all sat down, watching the sun. "You know, you're beautiful Leanna?" I laugh softly and shook my head as I ignored his comment, putting my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
Thump. Thump. Thump Thump. Thump. Thump.
"I'm not beautiful Andrew" I whisper gently as he kissed the top of my head, holding me closer to his body.
"Then why am I in love with you?" He whispers in my ear, his voice low and husky. I listened to his heart, trying to figure out if he was telling the truth.
Thump. Thump. Silence. Thump. Thump. Thump.
I sat up and looked at him before I moved in closed, pressing my lips against his. They felt so soft and smooth, just like I imagined them.
Within 3 years, I and Andrew were husband and wife. We came from opposing teams, one as a cheerleader, and the other as a basketball captain. Now, we are married, the first moment we had together was the top of our wedding cake.
It was perfect.
