If This Isn't Happiness

Page 1, Just a short story about a woman\'s thoughts as she puts her lover back to sleep through a descriptive massage.

He looked so peaceful as he lay beside me, in some far off land of wonderful, mysterious dreams. His black hair was sticking up in little tufts and his mouth was slightly open. I watched the rise and fall of his bare chest, and listened for the faint sound of his steady breathing. One arm was curled into his chest, while the other was draped around my waist. I could watch him sleep forever. But right now, I was tired, and needed more sleep. I lay my head back down and drifted off back into my dreamland.

I heard his voice calling me, and I stirred, turning over to face him. His face was full of panic and his eyes were wide. It was probably another nightmare.

“Hmm?” I murmured sleepily into my pillow.

“I need you. I can’t fall back asleep. I had one of my nightmares.” His voice sounded like a helpless child, and I couldn’t resist.

“Okay, come here.” I said softly, my eyes still half-closed. I felt his body curl into mine and I grabbed one of his hands with both of mine. This was the only way to get him to fall back asleep.

I started massaging his palm, feeling the calluses that had grown from all the construction work he had done this past week. His hands were soft, but rough, at the same time. I took my time, memorizing the way my fingers felt on his hands; the electricity between our skin. I listened to him groan slightly as he felt the tension melt away. I worked my way up to each individual finger, rubbing and stroking gently. I took in the way his fingers curled as he began to relax.

I moved to the other hand and did the same thing. I could hear his breathing start to slow down, and he was barely making any sounds. I continued to press my thumbs in gentle circles on his palms, ensuring that no knot went unnoticed. With his back facing me, I began massaging his neck, feeling the knots beneath my fingers. I kissed his shoulder blades and in between, feeling the soft skin beneath my chapped lips. Finally I heard a light snore and I knew he was once again fast asleep.

I smiled and rolled over. I buried my head into my pillow and closed my eyes; every detail of his body coming into view. The outline of his back muscles, his tanned skin, the freckles that seemed as if they were strategically placed. He let out another snore and I was torn from my thoughts. I giggled and closed my eyes once again. All I could was how lucky I was to have the love of my life sleep so soundly next to me every night. If this isn’t happiness, I don’t know what is.
