I Never Told You
“We are like dominoes. I fall for you, you fall for another.”
Marionette looked at her gown for the black and white themed Junior and Senior prom. All her life she’s waited for this moment. The moment where she’ll confess her love for Brett. A guy she simply fell in love with since Freshmen year. And no, it’s not because of his amazing looks that won the heart of precious Marionette, it was his boyish smile, his mysterious aura, his wits and the fact that he’s the most interesting person that Marionette ever met. Even more than artists and singers. There was just something about him that pulled at the heartstrings of Marionette.
“I can’t believe I’m doing it…” She murmured to herself.
She purposely bought the amazing gown for this moment. A black strapless taffeta mermaid twist gown that brought out her curves and her beauty. It made her feel amazing and the mask that she bought with it hid her face, helping her boost her confidence.
Marionette was never a girl with social skills. She prefers to stay indoors, or most commonly, the library. You can say that she’s the shy-anti-social-girl-that-loves-to-read-books in a novel, meaning that she’s undeniably cliché. But no, she’s not shy. She’s a girl who grew up with formal and very strict parents. Manners and respect are all in her family. High standards as one might call it. That’s the reason why she was never good at socializing. The more she grew up, the more she became distant.
“Marionette… Are you coming down?” Her mother knocked on her door and peeked inside the room.
A wave of nervousness came and her face paled. Her heart thumped against her chest as she looked at her reflection. She didn’t look that bad. In fact, she felt as if she was truly beautiful. Her mother came up behind her and smiled at her daughter. She couldn’t believe that her daughter was growing up so fast. It felt as if it was only yesterday that she held her daughter in her arms, cradling her. And now, her daughter stood before her, going to Junior and Senior prom.
Marionette reached for the mask on her desk and took a deep breath. She didn’t waste any of her time in having second thoughts about her big declaration. She stepped inside the limo and with a slight nod of her head and a wave of her hand to her mother, she was on her way.

The place was amazing. The whole glass lake house was converted into a beautiful majestic garden scenario beneath the moonlight. The pathway towards the doors was filled with hanging lights that made the sequins on her dress gleam and twinkle. As she stopped in front of the glass doors, she took a deep breath and put her mask on her face. It devoured the half most top of her face and it made her look beautiful and confident.
She took a hesitant step inside and was overwhelmed by the scene that was displayed in front of her. The glass walls and windows made the moon’s light bounce inside and emphasize even the most little of things. It seemed like a dream come true. The perfect way to declare her love for Brett. And when she finally had the courage to walk inside, she was stunned by the fact that all of the students wore masks.
But it didn’t stop her from searching for Brett. All that she needs to do is to look into his eyes and she’ll know. His pools of deep blue green that forever she could get lost into. His dark brown hair that she wants to run her fingers into. Just the thought of it made her smile. She glided across the room towards the way outside where the ballroom was placed. She stopped right in front of the steps down the garden. The stairs were more or less consisted of only seven or eight steps but it was enough to make an entrance. She stopped just on top of it before looking over the crowd of students.
A sea of black and white gowns and tuxedos meet her gaze. And all she could do was stare. Her mind ran images of Brett, conversations with Brett. It filled her mind. A small smile tugged on her lips even though her heart thumped like she ran miles. Her palms sweated slightly and when she took one step down the stairs, a flash of light made her blind. She gripped the railing and slowly descended the stairs in hope of not falling down and embarrassing herself.
When she reached the last step though, the light went away and all eyes were on her. It made her look down and a blush rose to her face. Her eyes danced upon boys who gave her a second glance and boys who had green eyes. She walked around the garden for a bit before feeling like giving up. And at some point, she almost did. She leaned against a table, feeling alone. The song “I Never Told You” by Colbie Caillat played from the DJ booth and she felt herself sigh.
She loved that song. If ever she and Brett would ever be together that would be her song for him. She actually felt sorry for herself. Dreaming about something that’s never going to happen. That’s when a light lighted up the nicely built small stage beside the DJ booth and Brett came up behind the curtains, playing the guitar and it he was followed by a student who was obviously the vocalist.
I miss those blue eyes, how you kiss me at night
I miss the way we sleep
She straightened up quickly, took a step forward and sucked in a deep breath. He looked breathtaking.
Like’s there’s no sunrise, like the taste of your smile
I miss the way we breathe
His mask was perched on top of his head and he wore a black and white tuxedo. The sight of him alone made her heart speed faster.
But I never told you what I should have said
No I never told you, I just held it in
She watched silently as he swayed and grinned at the students who danced with the song. Of course, it made her heart melt.
And now I miss everything about you
Can’t believe I’d still want you
She wracked her brain for a plan of some sort. Ideas flooded her mind and she bit her lip nervously.
And after all the things we’ve been through
Should she walk up to him and just blurt out, I love you?
I miss everything about you, without you
Or should she just ask him to dance and take it slowly?
I see your blue eyes every time I close my eyes
You make it hard to see
She hesitantly walked towards him. Trying to formulate the things she’ll say to him. I love you, she thought as she stared at him.
Where I belong to, when I’m not around you
It’s like I’m not with me
Her heart fluttered like a bird when he gave the guitar to some other guy and he looked at her direction. Why is he looking at me? She thought wildly.
But I never told you what I should have said
No I never told you, I just held it in
When he stepped off the stage and started to walk in her direction, her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. She started extending her hand, but when a girl walked past her, all her dreams were crushed. The girl—she recognized as Grazilda—stepped into the arms of Brett.
And now I miss everything about you (still you’re gone)
Can’t believe I’d still want you
(and I’m loving you I never should’ve walked away)
Her eyes widened and she could feel and hear her heart crushing into pieces. She backed away, slowly backing away before sinking into the darkness and letting the tears run down her face behind the mask.
And after all the things we’ve been through
(I know it’s never going to come again)
I miss everything about you, without you
Huge sobs raked her chest as she leaned against the wall and slid down the floor. She held her face in her hands and tears pooled in it. Her heart broke as she watched in the darkness how Brett would kiss Grazilda and whisper silly things in her ear. How Brett would twirl Grazilda and they would both smile. And soon, she just stayed there. Being lifeless, done crying, done sobbing.
A hand came out of nowhere and stayed in front of her. She looked at the owner of the hand and found devastatingly beautiful pair of blue eyes. She took the offered hand and let him pull her up.
But I never told you what I should have said
“Will you dance with me?” He asked. She looked at him before breathing out, “Yes.”
No I never told you, I just held it in
He led her to the dance floor and held her in his arms.
And now I miss everything about you (still you’re gone)
Can’t believe I’d still want you
(and I’m loving you I never should’ve walked away)
Her heart ached but it didn’t hurt as much as before. She felt unusually safe around this Mysterious guy. He made her feel safe, happy… loved. That’s when it hit her.
Her eyes snapped up and met his. Her hand cupped his cheek and a smile danced upon her lips.
And after all the things we’ve been through
(I know it’s never going to come again)
“Peter?” She breathed out. His eyes lit up and only one thing could’ve made this perfect for the both of them.
I miss everything about you, without you
He leaned down, she tilted her head up. Their eyes met and all Marionette saw was how close she was for making a mistake that she would’ve regretted; how close she was for telling someone you love them even if you don’t.
She just realized, just then, how she took a step back but took two steps forward. She would never forget the moment where-in she found the real person who she fell in-love with, her best friend, Peter.
And as the last melody of the song played, his lips touched her and in the background, Marionette could almost see the future that’s held for the both of them.
