Being a dad isn't what I expected. I mean, I've only been a dad for a couple of days and my whole world has shifted. It's like; nothing is holding me to this Earth apart from my beautiful, strong wife and my incredibly gorgeous baby girl. I have to see her again, I couldn't wait any longer.
I was holding her in my arms again and walking through the hallways, trying to find an empty, peaceful room to stand in for just a few seconds with this beautiful human being. I finally found one and walked inside, and was happy that it had a big square window on the opposite wall to the door, and you could see the stars perfectly. She nuzzled her head slightly to the side, stirring in her peaceful slumber. I waited, almost silent apart from the sounds of my small, excited breaths, and then she opened her eyes and it was like staring into heaven.
I turned her in my arms, jostling her slightly to make it comfortable for both of us, and then sat down in a chair facing the window, and I began to talk:
"This is it, my baby girl. Welcome to existence, it's going to be a bumpy ride. You're going to be great, I can tell. I'll be proud of you whatever you choose, whoever you grow up to be, I'll always be proud of you. Your mummy already adores you, as well. She's going to be a brilliant mum, I promise. We'll all get along as well as any family does. I love you, my darling. You see those stars up there? Your whole life, you'll shine just as brightly as those stars, and I won't ever let anybody dim your light. I believe in you." And with that, this little baby angel that I was holding in my arms and in my heart, squeezed my finger ever so gently, before nodding back off to sleep again with a content smile, without ever knowing what I had just said to her. But I knew, and I will hold onto my promise forever.
