Nina sat on her living room couch watching TV. Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
"Hey u", read the text.
Nina replied, “hey baby how’s u?”
“Am good darling how’s u?”, said Mark.
“Am okay now.”, Nina replied.
“Well I was worried about you. You didn’t message for a whole one day. That's not like you. You message me every two hours to see if I was free to chat with you.”
“Yeah, you're right, except for Saturday and Sunday. I was not well. I felt dizzy, my left arm ached, the left side of my chest pained terribly, and I had stomach pains. I sweat like a pig. My bed was soaked in the morning.”
“Oh my God, baby, are you ok now? Did you take any meds or visit a doctor?” Mark texted.
“No, just thought about you and wanted to be in your arms.”
“Aw, sweetheart, I know, but you don’t take care of yourself,” replied Mark.
“Anyway, a smile came to me as I remembered how you came into my life three years ago. Those were the good old days.”
Mark replied, “Hmm. Ok. Be right back.”
Nina disappointed but at the same time happy that he cared for her. "Okay," she replied.
Nina thought about her life. She was a confident 26 year old girl. In her thoughts she returned to her childhood. Nina was the only child of her parents. Born with "Myopia"(which is a eye problem that effects the eye balls and makes the person have problem focusing or seeing an objct like a ball being thrown at the person to catch), Nina could not see distances but everybody said she was a smart kid. All the neighbours would carry Nina and take her to their homes just to hear her talk. The neighbors sat Nina in their midst and listen with rapt attention to her tell stories. At two years old, the adults marveled at her ability to tell such beautiful stories.
Nina could charm anybody. Even the toughest soul would soften when he heard her talking and laughing. Folks told her parents that she possessed a most remarkable kind of Charisma. In their zeal to protect her, her parents refused to let Nina play outside with other children. They feared she would fall and get hurt.
Nina lived in her own world. She talked to plants and her dolls, artfully decorated her room, and painted amazingly well in her colouring book. She never longed for the life outside. She simply did not know. With both parents working Nina learned to enjoy her time alone.
When she finished high school, she attended junior college where she excelled in her studies and was encouraged to write essays and get into extracurricular activities. Arranging flowers and writing essays came easily to her and she won a number of contests.
Boys were a different matter. She refused to date. She refused to even give her cell phone number away. Once, a boy from her college came to her house and asked her father for Nina's number. She went wild on her father. He never did that again. Nina also did well in Degree college, graduating with distinction, but she still refused all the advances from the boys.
After graduation she joined a company. She immersed herself into the job as she had with school. Nina loved the atmosphere and spoke to people all over the world, many overseas. She knew it was time to turn her attention to a matter which she kept in a box.
Since her youth, Nina determined to keep herself until marriage. Many young men were attracted to this beauty but she resisted. However, the natural hormones which flowed through her body raged, demanding extraordinary control. The men she met regarded her as "old school".
The free flowing hormones affecting Nina also affected the other young women her age. When she saw the broken relationships and hurt the other girls experienced, Nina knew she was right, even if her body said she was wrong. Hearing the local gossip of Nina's peers, and perhaps reflecting back on her own life at that age, Nina's mother asked Nina to quit her job and come home. She feared for Nina.
Nina agreed, quit her job, and returned home. Still over-protective, her parents prohibited Nina from going out with her girlfriends for movies, shopping, lunches, and sleep over at a friend's place. They also restricted her from talking to her friends on the phone because they thought the company of her parents was enough for Nina. They gave her pocket money but she had to account for the where and how much she spent.
Nina sank into a depression. To combat her sleeplessness, she took alcohol based cough syrup.
One day Nina called her girlfriend Lennex. Nina was startled to hear a man's voice. It was Lennox's boyfriend, Mark.
Mark, Lennex, and Nina chatted for almost an hour. Nina laughed happily and the blues seemed to fly away, at least for awhile.
"May I have your phone number, Nina?" asked Mark.
Nina said, “Lennex might feel bad if I give you my number.”
“She won’t say anything. She's sitting on my lap.”
“Okay, then.” Nina and Mark exchanged phone numbers.
The same day Nina got a message from Mark. “Hey beautiful, how are you?” “I love your voice, you’re a very sweet girl. Your voice is still ringing in my ears. I hope we will be together forever and ever.”
Nina, who usually would have deleted or screamed at the sender, felt some kind of happiness in her heart. She smiled and replied, “Mark, I loved your voice too. You make me laugh. But honey, you're committed to Lennex and if she sees this message that you sent to me, she will feel bad.”
“Nah, she won’t. She knows me. I showed it to her and sent it.” Nina believed Mark and never brought it up again.
From then on, Mark and Nina talked to each other for hours. When he traveled from home to work, they came to know each other, and he told her that originally, he thought to hook her up to one of his friends. But then after they talked for two days, he dropped the idea. Mark began to fall for Nina. Mark said he wanted to protect her and be her boyfriend and lover, but only in a virtual way. He respected her wishes regarding physical relationships.
As days passed, their fondness for each other grew. Mark offered to donate one of his eyes so that she could see better. He said she was so caring about her friends when they needed her she would fight with her parents and go to help them. He said she was very simple, kind hearted, and too sweet. He called her the daughter of Mother Teresa.
Nina quit her habit of cough syrup and her outlook on life improved. Though Nina knew she could never have him, she fell for him and loved him. She anxiously awaited for his calls and texts. After a few months, he said the magical words every girl desires to hear, "I love you.”
“I wish I had met you before Lennex.”
Nina said, “No, never think like that. Lennex is your first priority. Never leave her, ever. She needs you.”
“See this is the best thing in you Nina; you never think of hurting people, even if it hurts you the most. Lennex has two friends who told her to her face that they loved me and that I was theirs. I was the husband of each.
“Though I said, 'I love you', you say am her's first. That’s why you’re so special to me. I don’t want anyone to hurt you ever. I will make you so tough that if anyone tries to hurt you, I will kill them. I want to see you at the top were no one can mess with you.”
And this way Mark and Nina became a sweet couple who had not met each other in person for two years. They decided that Nov 10th, which was the first time they spoke, would be their so-called wedding day. Although legal papers declare Mark and Lennex man and wife, Mark stated that no papers were needed to tell that Nina was his wife, too. For him his real happiness was hearing Nina’s voice everyday.
Then time passed they celebrated their 3rd anniversary still only talking on the phone. Nina was 25 years old and Mark 26.
One day Nina told Mark that the baby she wanted to adopt when she was working could be hers only with Lennex's help with the money.
Mark was so excited but suddenly heard Nina crying. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"My parents don’t allow me to go out alone. They've even stopped me from doing anything. When I asked them to buy me a bicycle for my 25th birthday, they declined. They said, 'When you ride it on the road, I might fall and get hurt.'. Can you believe that? When I asked my mom to buy me a hair band, she said, 'You're not a child anymore and hair bands were for kids'."
Mark got wild and said, “This is heights. You're twenty-five, a Major, and they treat you like this? I want you to come out of home as soon as possible.”
Nina replied, “I can’t run away from home, that will cause them a heart attack and I need a house to stay and money too.”
”You have some money that you saved when you were working right?”
”Yes I have but it’s with my Father.”
“Oh God. Listen, I will talk to Lennex about this and will tell her to come and pick you up this Saturday. You can stay in the house beside ours. I will talk to the owner. Don’t worry, just pack your stuff, and be ready.”
On Saturday Lennex arrived and took Nina away, despite the shouting by Nina's mom to stop them and then her useless threat to kill herself they left home. They went to a police station and told the Inspector everything. The Inspector asked them to write a statement, submit her ID proofs, and give her a case number should something serious occur.
Although Mark and Nina were alone on many occasions, they never got tempted. They knew that, though they loved each other, all they could do is only hug each other. But one day Mark unexpectedly hugged Nina, he told her that she was precious to him, and gave her a peck on her lips kiss. She reveled in the moment of her first kiss on the lips. Her brain was a thunderstorm of emotions. Slowly and sadly, Nina realised that it was wrong. She knew she was right. She sadly realized this first time was the last time she would feel his smooth and soft lips on hers. Nina proudly proclaimed, "I will never allow another man to touch me because I am now yours and I don't mind dying a virgin."
Nina applied for a new job and with a little money she had asked Mark to take Lennex for dinner on Mark's birthday.
Even though Nina was away from home her parents kept calling her and said they missed her and wanted her back. Her mom used to cry on the phone and call her everyday and night. Somehow her parents located the house where Nina lived and started meeting her daily. They asked Nina to give her certificates to them so that they knew that she would come back. They came to her house daily and showed Nina her mom's medical reports. They claimed her mom lost weight because Nina left home. Her parents coerced Nina to inform where she was and what she was doing when she went out.
One day, Nina told Mark she wanted to pay Lennex back the money she owed her. She also wanted to help them financially, too.
Wisely, Mark said, "That's a bad idea, Nina. If you give up your money you will be again stuck in hell again.”
“It will be all right Mark", Nina tried to assure him. "You need the money. It's my money and I love you, don’t I?”
Nina went to her dad and asked him to give her money back to her. He replied,
Okay. I will give you the money but only if you stop talking to him.”
Defeated, Nina moved back home and quit her job as her parents requested. Quite soon her parents resumed acting as they did before. They forbade Nina from speaking with Mark and her other friends.
After two months Mark contacted Nina via text message. She told him how lonely and horribly treated she had been. Mark said he missed her and regretted letting her return home.
Not long later Mark got a text from Nina. "That's it. No more mistakes. I'm leaving this place. I no longer care what my parents think. I'll tell the police to keep my parents away from me." Mark raised his eyebrows as he read on. "It's time for my own life. A life with my adopted child and you."
Mark grinned and replied, "I love you and I always will. It's time to stop dreaming of your life. It's time to begin living your dream."
This is not a normal or a perfect love story but it is Nina's Special Love Story.
