Someone once said to me “Melody, love is the key; that love is all you need.” When I first heard this, when I was about ten, I thought this was what dreams were made of. Princesses finding their princes and being rescued, having knights in shining armor. Then I grew up. I learned knights only existed in fairy tales and I was never going to have my prince… I met my brother’s best friend and things started to change.
“Mel!” My brother shouted from the other side of the bathroom door. “Hurry up! Can’t you do your makeup in your room?”
“Geeze Mark, I’m a girl give me some time. Besides do you want me to look a wreck on my first day of being a sophomore?” Mark rolled his eyes and closed the bathroom door behind him. Mark was a senior and we both went to the same high school. He liked to act like we didn’t know each other in school but at home we were pretty civil to each other.
“Hey mark,” I began in a soft tone.
“Yes?” He asked suspiciously.
“Since you have you have your license, and I am wearing heels I can barely walk in them, I was hoping you could drive me…”
“Or you could wear sneakers?” Mark chuckled. “You just want to get closer to Ryan.” I started to feel my face turn hot.
“I don’t even like him!” I protested.
“Oh please, that’s why you’re turning that color tomato face.” He laughed. “But sure you can have a ride, once we get there you walk and pretend you don’t know me. Got it?” I nodded, grabbed my stuff and headed towards the car slowly trying not to trip over my own feet in my new shoes.
When we pulled up in front of Ryan’s house, Max honked the horn, Ryan came running, out and climbed into the passenger seat. I hadn’t seen him all summer. He had been away in Europe seeing the world and learning new things. He had gotten a lot more hair since the last time I had seemed him but it was cute.
“Hey Melody, what’s up?” Ryan asked me after a while.
“Nothing really,” I said checking my bag and of course I had left my sandals at home. I was stuck with the stupid shoes I put on all day. “How was Europe?”
“Amazing, but I don’t think my girlfriend loved it too much.” He frowned and turned to mark. “She dumped me the first week I was gone.” Mark started to laugh.
“I told you it wouldn’t last man,” Mark said still chuckling. I didn’t know what to say. “Hey now you can take Tara up on her offer!” They both started to laugh. I still sat in the back quietly until we got there dreading it.
“Alright Melody we’re here,” he said three blocks away “get out and pretend we don’t know each other.”
“We had a deal Mel,” Mark said.
“Man, just drive her closer,” Ryan said defending me. Mark sighed and parked. I got out and walked slowly to my first class, trying not to trip. I tried my best not to think about anyone staring at me or anything along those lines.
On my way to my brothers car, I got stopped by my ex-boyfriend Tony who was the worst guy I could have ever even thought about being my prince.
“Why hello there,” Tony said smiling and looking me up and down.
“What do you want?” I replied anxiously; looking anywhere but into his eyes.
“A second chance,” he said in the same voice he had used when he first asked me to be his girlfriend. I could never forget it, or what he did.
The way tony had told everyone everything and how I couldn’t show my face in my own school without ridicule or some sort of comment. He basically ruined my chance of having a nice high school career before I could even try to make something of it.
“Forget it,” I said almost instantly. He grabbed my arm. “You’re hurting me…” I tried pulling away but he just gripped my pale arm tighter, making it turn red around his fingers. All of a sudden I heard someone else’s voice.
“Melody, you okay?” They said. He instantly released me. It was Ryan.
“We will settle this later,” Tony whispered then walked away.
“Yeah,” I said with a tear rolling down my cheek.
“Then why are you crying?” Ryan said sympathetically.
“I’m not,” Ryan smiled and wiped the tear. “Don’t act like you didn’t hear all the rumors. Just leave me alone,”
“It’s okay, let’s just go to Mark’s car, and get you
Home.” I shook my head and headed home. “At least take my sweater, its cold.” He put his tan sweater over my head and smiled. I headed home and on the way, Tony caught me.
“Hey babe, we meet again.” I tried to walk away but he caught up to me. “Babe don’t run from me… I love you.” I could smell the alcohol on his breath alcohol and lust was a dangerous combination, as I had learned from prior experience. Tony grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me.
“Stop!” I screamed. The birds flew from the tree as I hit it and slid down.
“Why are you wearing a man’s sweater?” Tony asked me infuriated as he approached me.
“T-Tony please,” I begged. Suddenly I saw Tony turn around then fall to the ground. I crawled away as fast as I could, not caring whether or not I got cuts, bawling. I heard punches hitting flesh and when it finally stopped so did I. I felt a hand on my back and screamed as loud as I could.
“Shhh it okay,” My knight said as he pulled me by his sweater into his arms. “It’s me Ryan; I’m taking you home, okay?” I gripped his left hand tightly as he called the cops for Tony.
After he brought me home, he left for the hospital and it turned out he broke his wrist protecting me from Tony. I was afraid to leave my house for the next week, despite my brother’s promises to protect me. Ryan stopped by to hang out with my brother, and stopped in my room.
“How are you doin?” Ryan asked, sitting next to me with a straight face.
“Okay I guess, thanks for saving me.” I sat next to him.
“I should’ve come sooner though Melody, I could’ve been so much more help.” I had liked him so long and with this I couldn’t help but feel like he was my knight. I got up and sat on his lap and he kept the same face. I finally kissed him softly on the bridge on the nose while he closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry, and it’s okay.” I said looking into his deep gray eyes. He smiled and kissed me back with everything he had in his heart.
“You realize your my best friends little sister right?”
“I don’t mind.” He pulled me close and we locked lips. Every day he held my hand in the hall and was my knight in shining armor.
