First, there were the super hero comics. That was the beginning of an era. Many people were spending their money to collect the series of their favorite super hero. It was an addiction. Still is. In every child's fantasy, there is a super hero. A seemingly ordinary person that can fly, is fast like a thunder, can control the elements of nature or can heal from serious wounds in zero time. That is why, one comic after another, was brought to life, with real people, with a secret life, an alter ego, trying to rescue the humanity from evil. Who is your favorite super hero? Which one is the best super hero movie?
Superman was the first super hero movie ever presented on big screen in 1978. The film was based upon the fictional character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster by DC Comics. The special effects were astonishing although technology was not that developed back then. Clark Kent, is ostensibly a quite, shy journalist. All he cares about is his work. But when someone is in trouble or in danger, he becomes Superman. The handsome, muscular hero, with the S emblem on his chest. He can fly, he is fast like the wind, and nothing can hurt him. Almost nothing. His only weakness is the kryptonite that can take away all his powers. And of course, his love for Lois Lane. Christopher Reeve is still remembered as one of the best actors that pulled off Superman and Clark Kent so well. The sequels were cherished almost as much as the original version. There was no other super hero movie until 1989 where Batman was released.
Batman is once more a DC Comics character. Even though he has no super powers, Batman-or else Bruce Wayne-still has the Batmobile and many excellent weapons and "toys" that make him equal to a super hero. And make him look really cool too. The extraordinary Tim Burton directed the first film and it was a blockbuster. Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicolson as the evil Joker and Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, gave us a dark, gothic film that was ranked at charts' top places. Even nowadays. Jack Nicolson had one of the best performances in his career that no one ever dared to challenge him. Until the astonishing performance by the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008), where some claimed that, he was even better than Jack Nicolson was in the original version. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this sequel wiped out the rest ones and made this film tough to overcome.
"With great power comes great responsibility"
Another popular and esteemed super hero is Spiderman by Marvel Comics. Released in 2002, this film focuses on a quiet student named Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) who was bitten by a laboratory spider on a field trip. He soon realized the bizarre super powers he obtained - the power and dexterity of a spider-but was not eager to use them until the death of his beloved uncle; the man that raised him as his parents passed away when he was young. It was then that Peter Parker decided to use his powers to fight crime as Spiderman. Directed by Sami Raimi, this super hero movie is an exceptional franchise that remains faithful to the original comic.
Almost any fan of Marvel Comics prayed so that someone finally will give flesh and bones to X-Men. The highly anticipated film was directed by Bryan Singer and includes an immense variety of great actors such as Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellan as Magneto, Famke Janssen as Dr. Jean Grey, Halle Berry as Storm and many others. Hugh Jackman was perfect in his role making it difficult for us to imagine someone else performing the role of Wolverine. X-Men are mutants with special super powers that face the discrimination and fear by the rest of humanity. Professor X is their leader, the man that united them all and originated a school where mutant kids can exploit their powers in peace. They serenely oppose to government's choice of eliminating all mutants. Their greatest enemy is Magneto, a man that can control any metal only with his mind. The special effects are excellent and the action is overwhelming. The sequel is even better as the first film was more like a get-to-know step with X-Men. X-Men 2 has a more solid story, more action and more excitement that satisfies even the most demanding fans.
Blade is an unusual super hero presented by Marvel Comics. Wesley Snipes in the leading role, plays a half-human, half-vampire super hero who stalks the undead. A vampire bit his mother while she was pregnant to him passing to Blade the need for blood but also increased strength, speed, and dexterity. His nickname is "the Daywalker" as he has no fear of the daylight. The film was released in 1998 and Stephen Norrington did a great job directing a film full of action, sword fights, kung fu scenes, and blood, blood, blood. Almost anyone is aware of the famous opening blood bath scene in an underground club where vampires are raving before Blade walks in. Wesley Snipes is great in his role, being totally stone-faced and cold but looking cool in every scene.
In 1994 was released probably the best gothic super hero movie ever. Brandon Lee staring as Eric Draven, a rock musician who is killed with his fiancé by a gangbang. He returns from the dead, with the eyesight ability of a crow, for revenge. As a punishing angel, he seeks and kills one by one all the members of the gangbang involved. It is a true gothic horror with great atmosphere and full of action. Ironically, Brandon Lee was killed in this film with a dummy bullet while shooting a scene.
The need and eager of super hero movies constantly rises. Over the last decades, we have releases from almost any super hero comic book published. And there are still more to come. Films with great special effects, solid stories, drama and full of action, we find a way to break through reality. Just imagine, which super power would you like to possess?
