Sent: Day 4,728,972: Year 12,956
Operation Lockdown is ready to proceed in approximately four days. Probes have been launched down to the planet's surface to scout out our prime target. Very soon Operation Terminate will be in procedure as well. The Infantry have no idea that our Door Runners have entered the area. It appears that we will have the full element of surprise. Our soldiers have been equipped with the most powerful weapons that we could find. The disintegration cannons have been charged and equipped with a solar charging station attached to the main energy field. That is all. I shall report again fifteen
years after the lockdown has been in progress. I appreciate your cooperation.
Infantry: soldiers marching or fighting on foot.
Earth is a pathetic world. It is young, thriving, and has no idea of what Infantry really are. No one on that planet does. They destroy each other with weapons just for the pleasure of doing it. Wars are waged, destroying what is good and clean. Their pollutants spread into their atmosphere and cause worldwide disturbance. I, however, do not live on Earth. I live on planet Tarlabon about 2000 light years away from Earth. The resources here are practically the same here as they are on Earth though. The people, however, may be similar in likes and ways, but they are literally a world apart. I am Toscyt and I am a part of The Infantry. On our world this means something quite different.
Infantry: a nearly extinguished race of beings with high intellect and supernatural powers. Able to wield the elements, the Infantry have been annihilated by the ones who fear them and their race is down to less than five thousand.
I am young, so my powers have not quite fully developed. This is the same for my two younger cousins, Nivcent and Voriatic. I was born in the metallic city of Nerved. I can't remember anything about it really. I just remember the white building where I was housed. From there we moved to Zetroc, and from there, we moved to Dolcutcro. It was there that I learned the truth that had been kept from me for thirteen years. I was part of the Infantry. My parents are the most powerful Infantry that there are (now at least). Before the Things invaded there were two Kings and two Queens who ruled. They kept their powers secret, but it was those powers that gave them title to the crowns. Once the Invasion began they were the first to go. My mom and dad took over, but in secret. They would've been assassinated immediately if the Things ever found out. My mother, Keby, controls the water. My father, Thanyon, controls fire. My uncle, Baluj, controls the Earth. My aunt, Yepnn, controls the air. My other family members control other things as well though they are not quite as powerful as the major four. My twenty-five year old cousin, Axle, controls the Weapons. My older cousin, Chelra, controls the plants. My other aunt, Cyann, controls poison and venom. My aunt Yepnn's son, Thallony, controls the Storm. While not fully formed, my small cousin Voriatic, controls animals. My five year old cousin Nivcent will control the mind. I myself am telekinetic.
Two-thousand years ago the Infantry controlled everything. There were thousands of us, and we all controlled something different. We never fought for the sake of it, never for the sake of hurt or death. Therefore, we were a thriving race, never hurting one another unless there was good reason for it. Then, the others came. They came disguised as the Infantry, and they made a good impersonation. We, being kind and prosperous, fell for it. Then the Infantry realized what they were.
I was not born yet but I can recall someone telling me. Two of these ….things… were walking down a street. An Infantry salesman was walking alongside them trying to get them to purchase his wares. Both of them, at the same time, pulled out automatic pistols and killed the salesman. They discarded their disguises and everyone saw what they were. They were the Calmesero, an alien race from the planet neighboring us. These few Calmesero were killed and the Infantry assumed that they would not return for a long time. They were wrong. Three and a half years passed peacefully, with nothing going on but the average day to day lives. Then, the fire began raining from the sky. Ships covered with evil markings upon them blew out of the sky, slamming down right into the heart of Zetroc. This was long before I was born, but my parents remember it well. My father grabbed my mother and began tearing through the city. They soon met up with all my other family members that were alive at that time, and they flew to the center of the city.
The Calmesero came bursting out of the bottoms of the ships. I've been told that they had big laser cannons strapped to their shoulders. Soon, hundreds filled the square, as they sent massive beams into the Infantry. The civilians and soldiers fled, leaving the Infantry to defeat this mass army. They continued to fight against impossible odds. My father stood firm as he sent massive fireballs into the crowd of Calmesero's eyes. Aunt Cyann threw burning liquids at them while Aunt Yepnn blew them miles, compressing the air around them to crush. Uncle Baluj broke the ground sending Calmeseros down to their doom. Thallony, who was only eight, and Chelra, who was only nine, hid behind the fighting Infantry. My ten year old cousin Axle was in back watching Thallony and Chelra. Yet, through all the fighting and losses, it was not enough to win the battle. Eventually some five-thousand of the Infantry, including all of my family, fled the battle. The Calmeseros soon dominated the town as my family watched from a distance. From there they went to Nerved where I was born during Year 2 of the Lockdown, and Voriatic was born during Year 6 of the Lockdown. There, the few of us remained, alone. Finding the loneliness unbearable, we began to move towards Zetroc, hoping to find something left. My parents tell me that we were extremely lucky. I'm told that we reached the city healthy but very tired. There was a small colony there of about three-hundred Infantry. We remained there for some time. During Year 9 of the Lockdown, Nivcent was born. Soon after that, we heard that the Calmeseros were converging in the area and moved again, here to the town of Dolcutcro where the story, truly, begins.
Day 5,475, Year 15 of the Lockdown
Nivcent (Age 6) squiggled and squirmed in the chair where he sat. He was making faces at me. His small dinner sat on the table in front of him untouched. Aunt Yepnn (Age 44) struggled to get him to eat but didn't get anywhere. She sighed and gave up, dropping the fork. It clattered against the floor but she didn't bother to pick it up. I was in Aunt Yepnn's and Uncle Baluj's (Age 43) small home in the innermost part of Dolcutcro. Voriatic (Age 9) snored in a nearby chair while Dad (Age 42) grumped and groaned about nothing in particular. Mom (Age 40) sat in a chair looking downright bored while Aunt Cyann (Age 47) sat in a chair with a look of complete disdain. Axle (Age 25) was with Thallony (Age 23) in his room playing one of their VGS games. Laughter echoed out of the room. I myself (Age 13) was standing outside in the frigid air, aiming with my hand at a plant on the porch. I was, as usual, dressed snugly in my full red outfit, with my shiny black shoes. My cape flowed in the wind (I was kind of eccentric back then) as I tried time and time again to levitate the plant over the deck, but Chelra (Age 23) loved her plants too much. Every time I managed to come up with just a little bit of force she would make the little plant dance away from me, and I would only lift a small piece of wood. Although I couldn't hear or see her I was positive that she was laughing. I eventually gave up and went into the house. I gave Chelra a glare and kept going. I heard her laughter echoing throughout the house. I entered Thallony's room. Both Axle and Thallony sat on Thallony's bed with game controllers in their hands.
"How's it going Toscyt?" Axle asked as I entered the room. I shrugged.
"Whatcha' doing?" I asked. Thallony just glared at me and I retreated out of the room. There was nothing exciting going on at all.
Suddenly, footsteps were heard ascending the stairs. Everyone suddenly froze. Uncle Baluj went for the lights and flicked them off. The fire under the stove was cut and everyone dove under some object of furniture. This hadn't happened in seven years. Nivcent was dragged under the table by Aunt Cyann and we all held our breath. I looked at Voriatic. She was shaking uncontrollably. She obviously knew what was happening. She looked at me. I motioned for her to shut her eyes. She nodded and her eyeballs disappeared. Axle and Thallony came crawling out of the room and wedged themselves behind a filing cabinet. Every house had secret places to go when The Calmeseros came looking but we didn't have enough time.
The thumping now echoed from the porch. A sudden scratching came from the door. Then silence. My father, Thanyon, climbed out from under the table and motioned for all of us to remain silent. He picked up a big dagger and approached the door. He took a deep breath and wrenched it open. A small little cat jumped into the room. We all let out a sigh of relief. My dad shut the door and reached down to it while we all clambered out from our hiding places. The poor thing looked close to death. It probably was. Food was scarce back then. The lights flicked back on. I looked around at all of my family members. They didn't look bored anymore.
"False alarm." Thanyon said. "They aren't here yet." Everyone turned around and returned to what they were doing. Yepnn grabbed the fork, sat Nivcent down, and tried to make him eat again. I wished something exciting would happen. Something that was actually real. As soon as I thought that I wanted to take it back. Who wanted the Calmeseros to come back? I wandered over the couch and plopped down on it. Suddenly, I sat straight up. 'What was that?' It sounded like a squeal of tire wheels. 'Nah, just the wind' I thought. No one else seemed to notice it. Then I heard another sound; the sound of a gun being loaded. 'Gosh, I need to calm down' I thought.
"Hey Yepnn," my Mom began. Aunt Yepnn looked up.
"The kids look bored. Let's play a game."
She got out of her chair and started toward the game cabinet. That's when the first explosion hit.
A huge hole was blown through the wall. Peeking out of it I caught a glimpse of the assailants. The Calmeseros, naturally, but they came with something else. Their huge laser cannons were strapped to their backs but that's not what caused the damage. Now that I thought about it, I had never seen a Calmesero before, and it was horrific. They were all around seven feet tall with dark, evil markings covering their skin. Their eyes were glowing a dark red color. They had teeth that were about 6 inches long. Two arms came out each side of their sides. They were completely bald, with no hair anywhere on their bodies. On their belts, they wore two plasma pistols, and on their backs they wore the huge energy cannons. Huge broadswords were strapped onto the back side of their belts. They were all holding huge assault rifles. A huge energy beam was aimed at the house. Two slots faced us kind of like the barrel of a double-barrel shotgun. A large handle was attached to the end. A Calmesero was holding it and aimed it. The whole gun was attached to a revolving cylinder. This was, in turn, attached to a truck. This was all that I could observe before the end glowed and the second blast hit the house.
"Get below!" I heard Uncle Baluj cry. He ran and opened the secret passageway. We all quickly descended the metal staircase into the basement hiding place. The secret passageway was sealed and we all listened to the pounding of the gun against the side of the house. I looked around the tiny, cramped room. Everyone looked scared. Well, of course they did. We did have powers but what were they when we were facing laser cannons and twenty fully grown Calmeseros?
Another explosion rocked the house and the ceiling showered us with dust. Nivcent looked at me and his eyes were full of tears. I was very surprised. Nivcent rarely cried unless he was in immense pain. I didn't realize just how much this was hurting him.
Suddenly, we heard over the rumble of the cannon the heavy boots of soldiers coming up the steps. Axle seemed enthusiastic, ready to kill. I looked down at the floor and saw something shiny. Following it I noticed it was a huge sword, approximately 4 feet long. Axle was holding it. Thallony stood beside him looking anxiously up at the door. Chelra was in the back holding Voriatic and Nivcent. The others were scattered around the room.
Out of nowhere there was another huge explosion and light flooded the room, blinding us for a few moments. Axle was the first to move. His hand (the one with the sword) twitched and he started up the winding stairs in a full sprint. Axle disappeared from view. I heard the Calmeseros cry out in surprise and then the whoosh! of air as he swung the sword. There was a sickening crunch and then the sound of a body hitting the carpet. Thallony hesitated for only a moment and then charged up the stairs after him. There was a crackling of electricity as Thallony discharged all the light bulbs. There were several more cries as the Calmeseros fell; twitching from the shock they had received. Everyone else looked at the top of the stairs, hesitating. Voriatic was quivering with fear and Nivcent was screaming. The whole thing was horrific.
Out of nowhere, the hallway right next to the metal staircase started shaking and glowing red with a bright light. There was an extraordinary blast of light and Axle and Thallony were pitched down the stairs. They came to a stop right at the bottom of the stairs. They were barely breathing. Cyann and Yepnn flew over and crouched next to them. The sound of boots echoing on the stairs reached our ears. Dad took one look at the rest of us and began to walk up the stairs. Now, it wasn't a vague feeling that gripped me. It was the fear of actually dying. Before I even knew what I was doing, my hands flew up to the ceiling above the staircase. I heard a loud crunch and knew that what was happening was now beyond my control. The roof started to shake and split apart. The whole thing came down upon the staircase. The sound of the Calmeseros being crushed echoed through the room while rocks bounced all around us. One struck Dad across the forehead creating a huge gash and thrusting him backwards. We all got one final look at the collapsing staircase before the final opening was sealed and we were all plunged into darkness.
Silence. Nothing could be heard except for the sound of our rapid breathing. Soon, I heard someone scuffling around on the floor moving around the walls.
"Yepnn," I heard Uncle Baluj say, "I think I found the grate." Yepnn (supposedly) moved over towards him. She felt the wall with her hand.
"That's it," I heard her say. Uncle Baluj began grunting and then there was the sound of squealing metal as the grate broke free of the wall.
"Okay everyone," Uncle Baluj said. "This grate is open. We're going to need to crawl through this opening until we come out on the other side of the house. It's a direct line so don't worry about being able to see. Nivcent will go first, followed by Voriatic, Toscyt, and then by Chelra. I will go next pushing Thanyon down." Apparently my father was either unconscious or unable to move himself. "Then Yepnn will go pushing Thallony and Cyann pushing Axle. Keby will follow all of them. With enough luck we'll make it to the other side." Luck, what a word to use in a situation like this, I thought. I heard the sound of Nivcent being lifted into the grate. Then Voriatic was lifted. I felt my way over to the grate. I felt the hole and shuddered. 'Axle is barely going to fit in this' I thought. The hole was maybe 3 feet wide and 2 feet high. I held my breath and climbed up into the grate.
It was pitch black in the grate (which I was expecting but it added to the feeling of suffocating) as I began to inch my way through the skinny tube. I heard Chelra starting to climb up so I began to crawl faster. It was incredibly hard to wriggle to that tiny space. I couldn't imagine how much trouble Aunt Cyann was having pushing Axle along.
The whole way along that long tunnel I was thinking about how I had managed to bring the ceiling down. My powers hadn't even developed and I had managed to kill about five Calmeseros. I couldn't figure it out as I inched my way along the dark passageway. 'Why could I do that'? I couldn't stop thinking about it.
After what seemed like an eternity of crawling, the tunnel started to get lighter. A dim light was reflecting down the tunnel. I realized that it was the end. Nivcent was already standing out in the bright sunlight. Every now and then his head would poke into the tunnel and the light would disappear. Voriatic quickly scooted herself out of the shaft and soon, I was out too.
The sunlight nearly blinded me. After being in the tunnel so long, the sunlight was painful. I heard the scuffling behind me as Chelra struggled to wriggle her way out. It appeared that everyone had at least fit into the shaft. The only question was, could they make it back out? I heard a sharp thud as Chelra fell flat onto the ground. She crawled about 2 feet and then slumped down, breathing heavily. A light vapor was coming out of her mouth every time she breathed. This was the first time I noticed that she was breathing out oxygen. She was more like a plant then I thought possible.
WHAM!!! There was a loud crash as my Dad toppled out of the grate and Uncle Baluj began to crawl out. The rest of my family members slowly clambered out of the grate in order over the course of an hour.
Finally, when they were finally all out, my Mom wet all of our faces and we began to march up the gigantic hill that was behind the house. As we climbed I looked back at the house. The upper half was blown apart and smoking. I saw part of the game cabinet, lying halfway out of the destroyed half of the house. My eyes filled with tears. The game cabinet symbolized a part of my life; a part that had just been blown to pieces. Deep in my heart I knew that there was no going back. My life had just gone up in flames like the house. The Calmeseros knew who we were now. We'd be hunted like fugitives. The only thing we could do now was run.
Finally, all of us gathered at the top of the hill. Only now did I get a good look at my Father. There was a huge gash running across the middle of his forehead. He was still unconscious. The left side of his face was covered in red. It looked horrible. He was very badly injured.
"Okay," Aunt Cyann said, "where do we go now?" My mom looked up.
"We can gather at our house," she said signaling me and Dad. "There we can rethink things and where we can go from here." I looked up at her. She sighed. "Toscyt, we can't stay here." I was prepared for the words but they were a blow nonetheless. It was incredible that one minute we were sitting in my Aunt Yepnn's house, and the next we were out here with nowhere to go. It was startling. Everyone nodded and we all stood up. Cyann was struggling to lift Axle. Baluj was carrying my father over his shoulder. I sighed and began climbing down the hill and in doing so, left my old peaceful life behind.
Sent: Day 5,476 Year 15 of the Lockdown
I trust that Operation Lockdown went as planned. I implore you to write back and tell me the specifics. It is now fifteen years after the lockdown has begun and I want a report! Well, I suppose I shall find out about your doings soon enough. I plan to beam down to the planet about twenty days from now. Inform your men that I expect everything to be perfect when I arrive. If it is not there will be consequences! That is all. Right Write back immediately! I want to know what's going on down there! Send my analysis report immediately!
My house is on the outskirts of Dolcutcro. It borders the forest, which I've been told extends far into the country bordering the one we're in now. Since we were around the center of Dolcutcro, and going straight through the center of the city was out of the question, we quickly took to the forest surrounding the city. The middle of the city is surrounded by a circle of trees. There is sort of a bridge between this circle of trees and the large forest. This bridge is what we were on now. I knew how small the city was, but still, it would take us at least seven hours to reach my house from the outer circle of the forest. I sighed and continued walking.
Everyone was silent as we moved forward. There was really nothing to speak about. I'm sure that we were all thinking about the same thing. There was no use in discussing it at the time though. The noon sun was beating hard down on us as we moved through the infinite wood. I heard someone groaning behind me. I looked and saw Thallony start to move. Yepnn slowly lowered him to the ground. He stood up and brushed himself off. Quickly we clued him in as to where we were and where we were going. Then we set off again.
After around five hours we climbed over the last hill and saw my house. As quickly as we could we descended the mountain and trudged into my backyard. Axle was eased onto my couch and Dad was put down on his and Mom's bed. Then we all moved back into the living room.
"We need a place to go," Thallony said. "Where should it be?" No one had any answers.
"I want to know one thing before we start this," I said. Everyone turned and looked at me. "Why was I able to bring the roof down?" Everyone started to answer but it was Mom who told me first.
"You were scared," she simply stated. "When an Infantry's powers are just starting to develop; it's very hard to use them right?" she asked. I nodded. "Well, studies show that when a young Infantry becomes scared or outraged his powers can suddenly burst out of him at astonishing rates. Since you are telekinetic, and you got scared, you managed to bring the roof down with your mind." I nodded.
"I think I understand," I said. Mom nodded and turned back to the group. They sat there discussing our plan of action for some time. I listened, but didn't add much.
"So, now we're back to this again," said Axle who had woken up around the middle of the argument. "Where are we going and how can we get there?"
"I have a suggestion," someone said from behind us. Everyone started and turned towards Mom and Dad's bedroom. Dad was leaning against the wall, his head was heavily bandaged. "My Mom lives in Asonp, Zonriaa. "If you all agree to this suggestion, we can make for it at once. She has plenty of food I'm sure. Sneaking past the Calmeseros will be difficult, but if we come up with a good plan, I'm sure that we'll manage. If we go now, we should be safe." Everyone was silent.
"It's a good idea," Yepnn said, "if we knew how to get there." For some reason Dad stood there smiling.
"Hey Toscyt," he said. I looked up at him. "Have you ever ridden the Sky Train?" Everyone in the room suddenly looked at Dad in awe.
"Thanyon, we can't," Mom said. "It's just too…it's impossible."
"Keby, we have no other choice," my Dad concluded.
Day 5, 487 Year 15 of the Lockdown
For the course of around a week (I didn't really keep track) we planned how to get to the Sky Train. I didn't really pay attention to what the adults were talking about. Only now did I realize, a week later, that I should have paid more attention.
Now we were riding in a Calmesero tank towards the city of Zetroc. I was told not to look as my family members surged around the tank and annihilated the Calmeseros that sat inside of it. After removing all of the bodies, we clambered inside and shut the top hatch. I was terribly nervous. I remember Mom telling me that Zetroc was where the invasion began. I thought that it would only be natural if the city was swarming with guards. At the time though, I was sitting in the back playing with Nivcent. Voriatic was sleeping in a chair nearby. I thought it would probably be best if I got some sleep, but I was too nervous. Axle was sitting in the front corner sharpening his blade. It was already shiny, but it wasn't good enough for him. Thallony wasn't doing a thing. Chelra was sleeping too. All of our parents were up front driving and discussing things which I didn't want to know about.
The Sky Train was on the very edge of Zetroc. I had seen it once as we left to move to Dolcutcro. It looked exactly like a metro-train: Bright, shiny, with different cars attached to it. The only difference was that the Sky Train flew. It would lift up about 5000 feet into the air, and zoom off at supersonic speed. Riding that thing we would be in Asonp in no time.
"Hey Toscyt," I heard Nivcent say. I looked over at him. "Where are we going?"
"Far away from here," I repeated. Nivcent looked close to tears.
"Why? I like it here. Our house is nice." I gave him a small smile.
"It isn't safe for us to stay here. We need to move some place where we can live and be happy. You'll like my Grandma's house. She has a big yard that you can play in." This seemed to cheer him up considerably. My Grandma, Ashron, would hopefully be willing to let us in. Hopefully the sight of me and my Dad would convince her to let us in to her home. It was our only hope. I heard the deep rattling sound as we drove over a huge cattle guard. I knew we had to be getting close. We had already been driving for roughly seven hours. Not that the tank was speedy, but it was faster than most vehicles. I once again disappeared into my own thoughts.
After around thirty minutes, we pulled off of the road and began to drive next to the huge chain link fence that surrounded Zetroc. My Dad was driving. After finding what he was looking for he stopped the tank and got out. He walked over to the chain link fence and touched it in a variety of different places. The fence then dissolved into thin air.
My Aunt Yepnn had told me about this fence. It was a secret way for members of the Infantry to enter the city undetected.
Dad smiled and walked back to the tank. After climbing in, he started it up and drove through the opening. As soon as the back end of the tank was through the gate it resealed. It now looked like a normal chain link fence. I began to feel nervous. The Sky Train would definitely be heavily guarded. It was the only fast way for the Infantry to get from one place to another.
We drove for around another fifteen minutes before my Dad stopped the tank.
"Calmesero encampment up ahead," he said. Mom popped the hatch on the top and everyone slowly clambered out. I held Nivcent's hand tightly as we clambered out of the top hatch. Everyone ran over behind one of the metallic buildings. Dad put out one of his hands and put his finger on his palm. I couldn't help but smile. This was the exact way he would teach me football plays.
"Okay, this is what we'll do," he began. "Keby and Thallony will circle around the back of the encampment and hide there until I give them the signal." He made a circular motion on his hand. "Axle and Chelra will attack from the left side when I give the signal. Yepnn and Cyann will attack from the right. Baluj and I will go up the middle."
"What's the signal?" Thallony asked.
"I'll use a fireball to blow up those fuel tanks in the encampment," he said pointing towards three big, black barrels.
"What will I do?" I asked. I couldn't help but 2be excited. I might be a part of something that could save us.
"You will take Nivcent and Voriatic and hide in the tank." I felt my heart sink. I began to argue but Dad shook his head and pointed at the tank. I took Nivcent by the hand and tugged him back into the tank. The only good thing was that I could watch the whole battle and not be seen by them.
The three of us climbed back into the tank as I watched my family run to their battle positions. It was then that I realized that right here, right now, was the battle that could change our lives for the better, or for the worse
Dad stepped out into the large street. Slowly he approached the large Calmesero encampment. I could see their red eyes gleam even from inside the tank. I could see my dad looking at the assault rifles in their hands. I saw him look back at Uncle Baluj and nod. He then turned and threw the fire directly into the fuel tanks.
There was a huge explosion that shook the ground. The tank shook as the explosion subsided. Uncle Baluj and Dad lay face-down on the ground. Calmeseros were falling out of the sky and landing among the debris in the camp. The next thing I knew Thallony and Mom and Yepnn and Cyann and Axle and Chelra were all in the middle of the camp. Plasma bullets flew through the air from the Calmesero rifles as my family circled around the remaining Calmeseros.
Chelra used huge vines to choke the enemy and then flip them hard into the dirt. Axle was slashing through their ranks with his huge shiny broad sword. Mom doused them with water and Thallony shocked them with huge jolts of electricity. Yepnn compressed the air around them causing them to suffocate. Aunt Cyann sent toxic chemicals at the Calmeseros. When it touched them their skin started to fizzle and soon they were just a heap of armor. Baluj sent huge chunks of earth plummeting towards them and my dad sent fireballs left and right. Yet, it still was not enough. Soon, more Calmesero reinforcements had arrived and our parents were being driven into the center of the encampment. They fought back with all of their power but soon they were suppressed. The Calmeseros formed a line around my family. I saw the laser cannons start to glow. Suddenly, I had an idea. I called Voriatic over.
"Listen," I said. "When I say Go, hit this panel and only let go when I say, okay?" She nodded and I scrambled over to the top of the tank. I climbed out and grabbed the turret on top of the tank.
"Go!" I yelled and felt the tank thrust forward. I pulled the safety restraints off and put my hands on the triggers. We were getting closer to encampment. The cannons began to glow brighter. They were almost ready to fire. Without any hesitation I began firing on the Calmeseros. Bullets ripped through the crowd killing them in mass quantities. They turned and fired the laser cannons but the beams missed. All of my family took advantage of the situation and blew apart their captors and dove out of the way. The tank drove through the crowd of Calmeseros sending them flying right and left. All of the Infantry ran back into the crowd and rejoined the fight. Soon the air was rent with the screams of Calmeseros being choked, disintegrated, burned, electrified, stabbed, and shot.
The hot shells of the plasma turret bounced back towards me but by that time they were nothing but trivial things. The turret's rattling filled my ears as I shot down the remaining Calmeseros one at a time.
Then I looked to my right and my hopes sank. A full force of about forty Calmeseros was marching over the hill. I was almost out of bullets and my family was growing weary. I was scared. Suddenly, a huge blast of energy was sent right into their force; then a second and third. It took me a couple of seconds to realize that the blasts were coming from the main weapon on the tank. I looked down into the hatch and saw Voriatic shaking as she hit the firing button again. A fourth blast slammed into the troops heading our way. She looked up at me. I nodded and gave her a reassuring smile, then returned to the turret. After around ten more minutes of fierce battling the Calmeseros lay dead. I couldn't help but be proud. I had helped save our family.
Suddenly, my dad turned and looked at me. I looked at the ground. 'Oh here it comes' I thought. Instead, my dad smiled and nodded. I was full of relief. Everyone turned, looked at each other, and climbed back into the tank.
It wasn't much longer until we arrived at the Sky Train. It had been at least 10 years from the last time I had seen it so I thought it was amazing. Dad looked over at all of us. He had lived here all of his life before he met Mom so he knew the train well.
"Okay, the main entrance to the Sky Train is right there," he began. "However, I am almost positive that it is crawling with Calmeseros. I played around this area when I was a boy. There is a small staircase about 100 yards south of the main entrance. It leads directly into the dining cart. Since the controls are in the train it shouldn't be difficult to start it. The only difficult thing will be getting to the staircase. We must be exceedingly quiet. Let's go!" After that he grabbed Mom's hand and popped the hatch and climbed out of the top of the tank. Nivcent and Voriatic were hoisted up and they slid silently to the ground next to Mom and Dad. My family members slowly departed one by one. After Uncle Baluj went, I climbed out of the hatch and slid quickly down the side of the tank landing hard on the pavement.
After all of us had landed next to Dad, he slowly led us around the corner of the train. I saw the staircase ahead. We all began to move a little more quickly. The staircase was now only fifty yards away. I began to feel tense. I had a really strange feeling. Twenty yards to go. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to happen. Ten yards. I began to feel really nervous. Five. I felt about to scream. Then, we were at the stairs. Instead of the feeling going away it got stronger. That's when the blast hit the staircase. The entire thing shook and we ran even faster to get to the train. About twenty Calmeseros were rounding the side of the building. Apparently we hadn't been quiet enough. Their laser cannons glowed and then the blasts flew right into the side of the staircase. About five of the supports blew out and fell to the ground. We were almost in the train. Dad flew in practically dragging Mom in. Then Cyann and Axle and Chelra and Baluj and Yepnn and Thallony flew in. I had never run as fast as I did right then. Only fifteen steps to go. Sooner then I imagined I was flying through the door of the Sky Train. Then there was Voriatic.
"Dad, turn on the train!" I yelled over the sounds of the laser cannons. Then I heard the staircase fall but worse than that, I heard the sound of Nivcent falling. I reached out my hand and snatched at his but missed. He fell with a look of complete horror on his face. I found myself concentrating harder then I had ever done before. I was amazed to see Nivcent start flying towards the train. I was using my powers again! Soon, he landed on the carpet gently next to me.
With the staircase gone, the Calmeseros turned their laser cannons on the train. I began to shake under the power of their blows. Suddenly, I felt the train pick up speed. Yepnn had her hand on the throttle and it was pressed almost to the floor. The train accelerated to 500 miles per hour in approximately ten seconds and the Calmeseros disappeared far behind us.
I was still shaking from our close escape. It was if, my eyes opened wide, they knew that we were going to escape. Then I remembered the noises I heard outside of our house the time we were planning our escape. I could've sworn that I heard something moving around out there.
I then remembered the story Aunt Yepnn told me (she usually told me stories). It was about the Door Runners. They are in the shape of small cats but they were incredibly dangerous to the Infantry. There were small recording devices inside of their skin. The Calmeseros would send them into an area where Infantry were hiding and learn precious information. They were the reason that most Infantry hideouts were discovered.
I concluded that a Door Runner must've been outside when we were planning our escape. If they had heard about our plans they could be converging on Asonp any minute. I shot out of my chair.
"We have to hurry!" I shouted. I took a deep breath and began to tell them what I thought. It took almost thirty minutes. I deduced that we had to be getting about a quarter of the way to Asonp. After I was done, Mom turned to Dad.
"We have to warn your mother," she said.

I am extremely sorry about the delay in the response to your letter. The Calmeseros are having a difficult time at the moment. We are currently tracking a group of Infantry along the Sky Train. We believe that they are going to Asonp to rally the remaining Infantry. Other then this small setback, Operation Lockdown is going perfectly. Every known Infantry encampment is under special guarding. We are almost positive that we know of every single Infantry that currently exist. In approximately a week we will be prepared to begin Operation Exterminate Phase II. I eagerly await a reply.
At around six-thirty the next morning we pulled into the Asonp station. After quietly exiting the train through another secret exit we emerged in the burning hot desert. The heat was almost unbearable as we wound our way towards the town we saw in the distance. We had managed to locate some Calmesero armor onboard the train and were perfectly disguised, except Nivcent. He was dressed like a bundle of additional outfits that Axle was carrying. After around two hours of walking we arrived at a huge gate. It was electrified; I could tell by the hum coming from the fence. A huge Calmesero emerged from behind the fence. He inspected us from head to foot, and eventually satisfied, hit a huge button. The gate slowly swung open. We trudged through the entrance and entered the huge, dusty, city. Large metallic buildings, which must once have been shiny, towered above us. The city might have looked pretty before dust covered all of it. I had to say, I was extremely nervous. I really didn't think that having dressed as Calmeseros was going to cut it. All the Calmeseros had to do was smell us and our disguises would be uncovered. There were just too many things that could go wrong. I knew we were in the heart of Infantry territory, so that made me feel a little bit better. The city might've been closed off but the Infantry were still strong. That much was certain.
We continued on our way, looking out as much for the Infantry as the Calmeseros. Any misconceptions and we could end up fighting our own race. Suddenly, Dad turned and whispered to us, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"This should be my Mother's house," he whispered. "If anything goes wrong and we have the wrong address, be prepared to escape. They might take us as Calmeseros and attack." He turned away and began trudging up to the door, battling a field of weeds to get to it. We followed quickly, taking off our helmets as we neared the door. Dad nodded at us and rapped on the door.
Suddenly, a little hatch opened and the huge barrel of a shotgun poked through right at Dad's chest. Then another hatch opened and a pair of eyes glared out at us. Suddenly they widened in surprise.
"Thanyon?" A voice whispered from inside the house. Dad nodded.
"Hi Mom," he said in a low voice. The door opened and Grandma Ashron was standing there. She smiled when she saw me.
"Well hi there Toscyt!" she said. I smiled back.
"Ashron," my mom said. "We need a place to hide. Will you please help us?" Grandma Ashron's face suddenly became very serious. She scanned all of us. After a few minutes she nodded and ushered us quickly inside.
After shutting the door and dead-bolting it she hurried us into the kitchen and sat all of us down at the table. Then for the next thirty minutes she hurried around the tiny room getting assorted food items out of there containers and feeding them to us. After we were all fed she turned to Mom.
"What sort of trouble are you in?" she asked.
"Well, the Calmeseros found us. They blew up Yepnn's house," she said signaling Aunt Yepnn with her hand, "and forced us to move. We have been on the run about two weeks now. After we ran into the Calmeseros at the Sky Train we managed to make it here," she finished. Grandma Ashron looked around at all of us in turn. She seemed to be contemplating something.
"So the Calmeseros know who you are, and that you came here?" she asked.
"Yes, I suppose so," Mom said. Grandma Ashron seemed to be considering whether or not to let us stay. Dad saw it too.
"We won't be here long," he insisted. "Just long enough to calm down a bit. Then we'll leave." For the third time she scanned all of our faces with her eyes. We must've looked very desperate to her. Apparently she also came to that conclusion.
"You guys can stay," she said. "Now kids, run out into the backyard and play. We," she waved her hand towards our parents, "need to discuss a few things."
Voriatic, Nivcent, and I trudged into the backyard. It wasn't very large. At the most it was thirty by forty feet. Voriatic, who isn't much for conversation, sat down on the deck stairs and put her head in her hands. Nivcent, who is by far my favorite, pulled me out into the yard.
"Cuddin Toscyt," he said, "will you wrestle with me?" I sighed.
"Yeah," I muttered. "But remember, I'm not gentle." Nivcent smiled and suddenly punched me hard in the gut, knocking the wind out of me. Sure he's only five years old but he is stronger than he looks. He can almost beat me in arm wrestles. He then swung again and I caught his hand and twisted it behind his back.
"Ow, ow, ow, ow!" he shouted. I released his arm and he jerked sharply away. He backed away a couple of feet and charged, planting his head directly into my stomach. It sent me sprawling on the ground, but soon I was on his back, slowly pulling his arm back. He had a smile on his face despite his exclamations of, "Ow!"
"Toscyt!" I heard someone shriek. I looked up and saw Mom staring down hard at me. "Hands to yourself, you know that!" she shouted. I glared and released Nivcent. Despite the fact that I was wrenching his arm backward, he seemed very disappointed that the game was over. I marched over to the deck and plopped down on the bottom stair next to Voriatic. She looked over at me.
"Right before we started to come here," she began, "I got a new 'Human High Doll," I groaned. I had already heard enough about Human High Doll's to last me a lifetime.
"What's this one called?" I asked.
"Scotty Courvoisier," she responded. "I don't really like it though. It glares and says rude things if you play with it too long," I smiled. 'Scotty Courvoisier,' I thought, 'what a stupid name for a doll.' Voriatic fell silent again. I felt badly. Nivcent was probably too little to realize what was going on, but I had never taken into account Voriatic's feelings. Maybe that's why she hadn't talked so much on this trip (if you could call it that). I looked over at her and noticed that she was crying.
"I… I just can't stop thinking about my friends," she sobbed. "If… they're…okay." I knew how she felt. I had a bunch of friends that were especially close to me. Actually, only two close friends. They were Ulke and Evrir. I hadn't seen my best friend for seven months. She and her family went on a trip to somewhere around the middle of the planet. They never came back.
Voriatic's loud sob brought me out of my thoughts. I stood her up and walked her into the house where Axle went over to talk to her. Then I returned outside. This was going to be a long day.
Sent Day 5,489 Year 15 of the Lockdown
Apparently you don't have such a good grip on this as I thought. You will find all the Infantry camps, destroy them, and find the Infantry family in Asonp and… never mind. Apparently you do not have the skill to lead the Calmeseros down on the planet. How will we get the resources if you can't even handle one little mishap? No matter, I will beam down to Asonp immediately and find the Infantry family myself. Oh and Avenger, you are relieved from duty.
I used to think that Dolcutcro was boring. After spending three days in Grandma Ashron's house in Asonp I began to think differently. There was absolutely nothing to do. Our parents were constantly in and out of the house spying on the Calmeseros and we barely had any time to speak to them. We three kids weren't allowed anywhere but the house (which was incredibly small) and the back yard (also incredibly small). Aunt Cyann and Axle and Chelra had to keep coming to Voriatic's room and calming her down. She would start sobbing and wailing for no apparent reason at random points in the day and night. It was incredibly troublesome.
I spent most of my time outside in the back yard. With this spare time, I had a lot of time to practice my powers. I would practice aiming my hand at random things around the yard and trying to lift them with my mind. It was incredibly hard. I not only had to aim, but it required deep concentration. I was, however, starting to get the hang of it and was throwing small boulders around with ease. I even managed to uproot an average sized tree before Chelra came running outside, shoved me aside, and somehow managed to put it back in the ground. Other than that, life was incredibly boring. I mostly found myself talking to Grandma Ashron.
She talked and talked all about what had been going on in Asonp, the new school that the Calmeseros were building for Infantry kids (this kind of frightened me) and asked me all about what was going on back in Dolcutcro. We could sit around and talk for hours which suited me fine because I really had nothing to do anyway. I actually found it quite peaceful to speak to Grandma Ashron about everything that I had heard was going on back home. Well, what was once my home.
I had pretty much gotten over the fact that our previous life was destroyed, but still, there was still that longing to be in school, or at Aunt Yepnn's house playing a board game, or at Aunt Cyann's for Thanksgiving dinner. However, this peace wouldn't last.
We had been in Asonp about a month when he arrived. We didn't even know it at the time. There had been weird noises outside for around an hour. We looked outside the window and saw a large group of Calmeseros gathering outside. We decided to sit tight and hope it was just a rallying point. I hid in a bedroom with Voriatic and Nivcent. But soon, it wasn't so easy to ignore the things the Calmeseros were doing outside. They seemed to be clearing a landing strip, but that was impossible considering the fact that any spacecraft would be much too big to land here in the city. Suddenly, Grandma Ashron pulled us into the dining room.
"There are too many Calmeseros here for this to be a coincidence," she began. "I'm going to go outside and distract the Calmeseros. You guys have to escape out the back door." Dad started to protest but Grandma quickly silenced him by standing up and walking to the door.
Just as her hand was on the doorknob, a huge blue beam came out of the sky and struck right in the middle of the cleared out space. Static electricity coursed through the air as it slammed down into the clearing. Suddenly, the blue beam was gone, and in its place stood a Calmesero. It wasn't a normal kind of Calmesero. It was bigger than the others, and nearly twice as ugly. It had four arms, the norm for Calmeseros, and the regularly equipped weapons. But his assault rifle wasn't the normal kind the other kind of Calmeseros had. This one was huge, and covered in spikes except for the handle. It had a belt of bullets on the side which wound down to the ground. On his belt he had several different types of plasma grenades along with a double-barrel shotgun slung across the back of the belt. On his back he wore two solar cannons, both a little smaller than the standard issue. In his two bottom arms he carried laser pistols which he quickly attached to his belt. He then gripped the assault rifle and his mouth formed a smile. I could see all of his pointy teeth; and then he was blasting at the house.
I was right when I said the assault rifle wasn't the same as the others. All of us dove to the left as bullets shattered through the outside wall and entered into the house. Grandma Ashron ran into the sewing room and dove under a table. The lead Calmesero was still smiling when he stopped firing.
"Come out!" he shouted in his disgusting voice. "If you come out and declare me, Overlord, as the one and only ruler, then you all will be spared. Don't and all of you disgusting Infantry will die today."
