Chapter 1: "Awakening"

*THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

I can hear the steady beating of my heart…

I feel the warmth of my breath against the walls of this confined room I’m in…

Where am I?

Who am I?

What am I?

I can’t remember anything from my past or my present… I’m uncertain of my future

I know nothing of my existence…

Why am I here?

“WHY are we here, Papa?” a voice came from afar. Something tells me that it was a girl.

Who was that?

“Be silent, my dear, or I might make you wait in the car.” another voice came. It was much lower than the latter – a man.

“But you told me we’re buying my dress today!” said the girl with a certain rise in her voice. Her voice sounded closer.

“We will, my sweet, but Papa must finish this first.” The man said with softness in his voice.

Papa… I’ve heard the word again… what does it mean?

They are very close now… their voices louder, clearer. My heart beats faster as I feel their presence…

Why is it doing so?

I heard the sound of what my mind tells me as metals scraping against metals. In an instant, all the air is sucked out of this cramped room. And as quickly as it went, it was replaced by the piercing cold air.

I squinted in the bright light. My container has been opened.

“Papa!” exclaimed the girl at the sight of me, “is that a girl?”

“No, darling,” answered her Papa, “it’s a doll”

“A doll?” the girl repeated,”is this the gift that you told me yesterday?”

What are they talking about?

“Yes, darling,” her Papa answered.

As my eyes adjusted in the light, I saw the girl and her Papa. She was small and he was tall… very tall.

“Why is she looking at me like that?” cried the girl, “I don’t want her, take her back!”

“But, darling, she’s the best that money can buy!” said her Papa.

“She looks scary!” the girl said.

“She’ll be fine once the doctor furnishes her up,” her Papa said.

Money… Scary… Furnish… what do these words mean?

“There are a lot of petty dolls in the mall, Papa, why did you pick this one?” the girl asked.

“Darling…,” was all that her Papa could say.

“Actually, Miss,” interrupted another voice, higher than the Papa’s but lower than the girl’s, “this is no ordinary doll,” he said, “this is an Android!”

“Android?” she repeated “What’s that?” she said the exact words that came into my mind as I heard the word.

“An Android is a human-like machine, Miss” answered the man. He might be the doctor the Papa was talking about.

“Like a robot,” said the girl.

“Yes and no,” said the doctor, “you see, Miss, a robot is a machine that only works according to what is programmed into its system. It may look like a human but itcould never think like one.”

“Whereas an android,” he continued “is a human-like machine, and when I say human-like, I meant it can talk, walk, eat, and breathe like real humans do. And sometimes, on very rare occasions, it can even feel.”

“I see,” said the girl, “then why are they called machines if they act like humans?” she asked

“They are called machines, because they, like the robots, have been made and programmed to do work,” explained the doctor, “by humans.”

“So, she’s not a real human.” concluded the girl.

“You could say that.” said the doctor.

“But how can she act like humans, if she’s not a real one?” asked the girl.

“That, Miss, is one of the mystery and beauty of science.” answered the doctor.

The girl and I looked intently into each others eyes. Her eyes were nothing like neither her Papa nor the doctor. There’s a certain glint into it that I couldn’t quite put.

“I don’t need a new friend, papa,” she said suddenly, “I’ve got lots of them at school!”

Friend… why is this word familiar?

“No, Miss,” said the doctor, “this is not a Friendship android.”

“What does is it do, then?” she asked.

“This is a Protection android,” he answered, “its purpose is to keep you safe from any harm.”

“We’ve got lots of bodyguards, Papa,” the girl said to her Papa, “I don’t think we need another one”

“We can never be too careful, my darling,” said her Papa.

Android… I remember it now…

The doctor was right… I indeed am an Android...

But, he was mistaken in one thing.

My purpose is not to preserve life….

I was made to end it.
