Book 1

Nym

1. Hospital

My eyes open. The clean hospital ceiling shines down on me, and I remember that I lie in a bed in the Curn General Hospital. Slowly, I begin to hear all of the busy sounds like the mechanical noises of the android nurses and the monitors around my bed. I watch the line of my heartbeat it's perfect. Lifting my right hand I see that I can still move my fingers properly.

The door of my ward creaks open, and a cautious face peers around the corner. It is Jerran. He was the last human face I saw before the accident and the first after. He smiles to see me awake. Jerran has a white bandage around his head; one of his eyes is either gone or damaged. I frown slightly, but he just stands there smiling at me.

"Hey, Nym."

"Hey. How's life on the outside?"

"Good, average. Nothing special's happened, but Emy's fixed the Warp."

"When can I go back in?"

"Soon, soon."

"When? Please tell me."

"When you get out of the hospital, but Karn isn't so keen on you going back into the Warp."

"What? I have to go back in. I feel this draw to the Q dimensions and I -"

"Nym, I know. And I'll try to get you there, but I'm not sure how much I can do. Karn calls all the shots."

"When do I get out of here?"

"Soon."

"Jerran, when in the world is soon? I can take it, however long it is."

"Well, they're not sure."

"What do you mean, "they're not sure"? They are always sure."

"Nym, you've been healing faster than most humans. There are have been a few cases when young girls, like you, have healed especially fast; but it's very rare and they say it only happens once every one thousand years. The doctors say you'll be out in 1 week tops."

Jerran's phone rang, and it was Karn. I watched his grey eyes as he talked. There was some desperation in the way he talked. Perhaps, it was because he wanted me to go back into the Warp for my sake. I know that he would never wish harm on me, so it had to be safe now. Or did he just want me to have whatever I wanted?

He snaps his phone shut and glances back at me. His expression abruptly changes, but he knows it's too late because I always sense what he's feeling. We stare at eachother for a few minutes before I break the silence.

"What did Karn say?"

"How the heck did you know it was Karn?"

"I could hear his voice. Now, answer my question."

"He wanted to know how you were doing."

"And…? I'm sure that's not all. Jerran, you were upset about something. Tell me."

"Ah, he keeps reminding me that you're not allowed to go into the Warp."

"And you keep arguing with him. That's what I thought."

"Yeah, I'll be back tomorrow to check on you."

"See you, Jerran."

Something left with him. Now I had to worry about what to do with myself, but I knew I couldn't wish that he were there all the time because he's very busy around the WEB. We have been slowly collecting information on the dimensions that the mysticals were trapped in. The mysticals are creatures of old, the creatures from tales of long ago like dragons and elves.

For centuries, us humans forgot about them and banished them to the farthest reaches of our minds. But for the last few hundred years, our technologies have found evidence that they actually existed. Most of our race believes that all of our "evidence" is just a bunch of hoaxes. The WEB is an organization that looks for more evidence and is now trying to cross to the other dimensions.

I drift off into sleep. I see a road that leads off into the east. A shadow passes overhead and a dragon sweeps over me. The sun reflects magnificently off of its golden scales. The dragon hovers in front of me and I am about to touch it, but it flies off suddenly. A large shadow is approaching from the west. I run as fast as I can, but I'm not fast enough. The blackness captures me and I am suffocating. I struggle against the clutches of the black cloud, but I am not strong enough. I wake up drenched in cold sweat.

My heart monitor has stopped, and it only starts now. The hospital is dark, but the androids are rushing around. A bunch of them scatter from my bedside as I look up. One of them returns with a glass of water and two bright yellow pills. I take the pills gratefully and sink into a deep slumber.

When I wake up, Jerran is sitting there. He watches me, and smiles when my eyes open.

"Hey, there sleepy."

"Hey, Jerran."
"It's 1:34, Nym. You've been sleeping for forever."

"Sorry to keep you waiting then."

"Huh, of course you are. Can you explain why your heart was stopped for 5 hours from 1 to 6 in the morning?"

"No, how could I?"

"I was just wondering, usually when someone's heart stops for 5 hours, they're dead. That's why I came to the hospital so early, I thought something happened."

"How's my healing going? I haven't had a chance to talk to the doctors yet."

"Good, it's amazing really. You've been in this hospital for 3 days and you were right in the middle of that explosion. Most people would have been killed by the force, but you are still amazingly alive."

"I'm just special. Do they still think I have to stay here for another 2 weeks?"

"No, they've revised that to 5 more days. They want to keep you here a few days beyond what they absolutely need, because you're so 'special'."

For the next 5 days, Jerran is there at precisely 12:30 pm. On the 5th day, he is finally allowed to take me home. The WEB's headquarters are about an hour away from the center of Curn, in a small village called Lan. Our car speeds down the highway with Jerran at the wheel and the world flashes by. The highways twist through the sky in a complex web, but our route is programmed into our car.
