The bay still shimmered in the moonlight. Two figures stood next to the remains of a fence, a few feet apart. They stared across the bay at the remnants of the city. They looked at each other and nodded solemnly together.
In the water a few hundred yards out, a barge lay sunk at an angle into the bottom of the bay. A few bodies floated in the water. A few body bags lay still in the half-open trailer on the barge, stuck fast into the muck of the bay.
Across that quiet bay, the city was no longer bright. There was a dim reflection from the full moon overhead, teasing in what it almost revealed. The city would keep most of its secrets as it slowly eroded from history. It accepted this destiny in awesome silence.
They glanced at each other and sadly smiled. Despair filled the darkness of the city. Tired, sad, but resolute, they stood united by destruction.
Yet, the Bay still glistened. In the eyes of the body floating just beyond the fence, they could see that the past was dead, the present was lost in the shadows of the city, and the future was, as always, still uncertain.
Max and Ier turned from the sight and left the city to its fate. They had a friendship forged in destruction and bonded in trust and honor.
It was enough.
