When The Author crashes down into John Miller's life, bringing a horde of Gloff with him, nothing will be the same again. With John's help, The Author sets out on the quest to regain his memories...

This is another Doctor Who spin-off, but one I intended to actually film with a friend, though that sadly never happened.

Episodes 2, 4 and 5 are not included here because I did not write them. View table of contents...

INT. TARDIS.

JOHN and GEM are standing about in the Tardis Console. THE
AUTHOR is doing repairs underneath the console. JOHN is
wearing an alien hat.

GEM
Did they really eat their younger
siblings?

THE AUTHOR
They can't help it Gem, it's their
nature.

JOHN
But surely that would be a
hindrance to their evolution?

THE AUTHOR
Indeed it is, which is why they go
extinct in half a million year's
time.

GEM
Good.

JOHN
Though, the hats were nice.

THE AUTHOR
Yeah, it was quite a tourist
center. But John, honestly, inside
clothes please?

JOHN
But-

THE AUTHOR
Who's Tardis is it?

JOHN
(amused)
Yours...

He takes the hat off.

The Author steps up, finishing the repairs.

THE AUTHOR
Done, not much needed
doing. Though, I may have to
reverse the polarity of the neutron
flow through the General
Equilibrium Dashboard. Won't take
too long, though John, perhaps you
could show Gem the library?

JOHN
Yeah, okay. Come on.

He takes her through into the library.

CUT TO:

LIBRARY.

JOHN and GEM walk in.

GEM
Oh... wow...

John smiles.

GEM
It's... huge!

JOHN
Apparently it has half of all books
ever published. The second largest
library in the universe!

GEM
Who told you that?

JOHN
The Author.

GEM
Well, he would say that, wouldn't
he...

She wanders over to a bookshelf. She takes out a CHARLES
DICKINS book...

Gem looks displeased.

JOHN
What is it?

GEM
I read this on Salvation. We had a
library there, very small... but it
had this book...

JOHN
Do you miss it?

GEM
Yes. It wasn't much of a world,
what with the Snatchers, and it
being a colony anyway... But it was
my home...

THE AUTHOR
(off screen)
Okay, I've finished!

John looks sympathetically at Gem, before walking back to
the console room with her.

CUT TO:

CONSOLE ROOM.

They walk in.

GEM
Could I see Earth?

THE AUTHOR
Yeah... I don't see why not. Which
period?

GEM
Any, I don't mind.

THE AUTHOR
Okay, how about the past. The past
for both of you, that is!

He runs around the console, pressing buttons. He then pulls
a lever, and the Tardis takes off-

PAN TO:

EARTH. 1985.

A man is running from a village.

MAN
Another mile and I'll turn back!

He runs further.

MAN
(panting)
Well... half a mile.

He then reaches an invisible barrier. He runs through it,
and is VAPORISED. He screams, before turning into DUST,
falling to the ground...

Behind him, the village fades away...

CUT TO:

OPENING CREDITS.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

Thud.

THE AUTHOR
Let's go!

They dash out of the Tardis.

CUT TO:

EXT. TARDIS. A FIELD.

They walk out of the TARDIS. It is a BLUE BOX.

THE AUTHOR
That's an interesting turnout. I
thought police boxes were on the
way out at this point... The Tardis
seems to like this pattern, it
seems.

JOHN
Where are we, Author?

THE AUTHOR
Um... Earth! England! 1985!

He starts walking. john and GEM follow him, slightly less
enthusiastic.

JOHN
Are you sure, Author?

THE AUTHOR
What are you implying... ? Of
course I'm sure!

JOHN
1985... I wouldn't have been born
yet.

GEM
...Nor would I.

The Author, however, is more concerned by a site at the top
of the hill.

JOHN
What's wrong?

THE AUTHOR
That village... I didn't know it
was there.

JOHN
Well, I didn't either. Should it
be there?

THE AUTHOR
I don't know...

GEM
Could you have got it wrong?

THE AUTHOR
Me, wrong?

JOHN
Very possibly.

THE AUTHOR
(annoyed)
Let's go take a look...

They walk up the hill.

CUT TO:

HILL.

THE AUTHOR
Anyway, more importantly - what do
you think of Earth, Gem?

GEM
It's as beautiful as the pictures
showed. But the pictures showed
all the best places, like the
waterfalls and mountains. I like
being able to be somewhere normal.

JOHN
Once we've seen the village, what
should we do, Author?

THE AUTHOR
There's a nice carnival going on in
a nearby town. Nothing too
exciting, but I thought it would
make a nice distraction.

They continue walking.

PAN TO:

VILLAGE.

It is quite deserted. Two people are huddled,
talking. Heather is very obviously the sort of person who
isolates herself, and only talks when spoken to...

WOMAN
I hope he's okay.

HEATHER
I'm sure he's fine. Maybe he just
got sidetracked at a pub, and-

WOMAN
No, no, he'd never do that
again. Another thing... Tam still
hasn't returned to the shop. He
went out two hours ago for some
meeting, and said it wouldn't take
longer than one hour.

HEATHER
Well, if he's not back by another
hour, let's look for him. Did he
say where?

WOMAN
No.

HEATHER
Well, I'm going. Let me know,
won't you?

She wanders off.

Woman sighs.

PAN TO:

HILL.

JOHN, THE AUTHOR and GEM are very nearly at the village.

THE AUTHOR
(examining SONIC DEVICE)
Hold on... I think I've been taking
you two in the wrong direction.

John is not suprised.

Gem is disappointed.

GEM
I wanted to see the village, and
compare it to Salvation.

THE AUTHOR
What about the carnival!?

GEM
Well, how about you and John go to
the carnival and I'll look
here. We'll meet up at the Tardis
in, say, two hours?

THE AUTHOR
Well...

GEM
What could happen to me?

THE AUTHOR
You don't know this planet, Gem!

GEM
I'm not stupid, Author.

THE AUTHOR
...No. I guess not. Sorry.

JOHN
Besides, that village looks safe
enough.

THE AUTHOR
I suppose so... Alright then. See
you in two hours!

GEM
I won't be late!

And they part ways.

CUT TO:

JOHN AND THE AUTHOR.

JOHN
She'll be fine, won't she?

THE AUTHOR
She seems resourceful enough. But
I do think it's a bad idea to leave
her alone, she isn't yet used to
this. But then, it is only a
village.

JOHN
Yeah, she'll be okay.

CUT TO:

GEM.

She walks towards the village...

PAN TO:

VILLAGE.

WOMAN
Oh, that's it, I'm going to look
for him.

HEATHER is walking down the road.

HEATHER
Tam turned up yet?

WOMAN
No, he hasn't. I'm going to look
for him.

Heather sighs.

HEATHER
I'll go with you. People will
start panicking if they can't get
their fresh milk (!).

They walk down the hill.

CUT TO:

HILL.

GEM walks along the road.

She stumbles across the remains of Tam - but to her, it is a
pile of sand.

She bends down, and picks some of it up.

GEM
That isn't sand...

She walks forward, crossing the barrier, but she doesn't
know this.

WOMAN
Hey!

Gem turns, and sees the WOMAN and HEATHER running to her.

WOMAN
Have you seen a man
recently? Wearing a blue cap, in
his mid 60s?

GEM
No, sorry.

WOMAN
Well, he can't be that far.

She runs a few meters, crossing the barrier-

And is VAPORISED.

Heather gasps.

Gem leaps back.

Heather moves to run forward as well.

GEM
Wait!

Heather stops.

GEM
There is some sort of barrier here
that kills people. Look-

She points at the now two piles of sand.

GEM
It seems whenever people cross the
barrier they die, and are
vaporized.

HEATHER
How do you know that!?

GEM
A guess.

HEATHER
But you crossed it!

GEM
Maybe it only effects people
leaving the village. Hold on, do
you have something you don't want
to keep, so I can test something?

Heather takes off a ring, and hands it to her. Gem throws
it.

It is VAPORISED.

GEM
I think I'm right. But how? Why?

HEATHER
We should warn people not to leave
the village.

GEM
Why would they listen? We'd sound
mad.

HEATHER
Something strange is happening, I
knew it!

GEM
What?

HEATHER
I never told anybody, but
everything looks subtly different
than it did yesterday. I can't
explain why...

Gem bends down, and examines the angle the three piles of
sand are at.

GEM
They're not in a straight line...
It's very slightly curved.

HEATHER
How can you tell?

GEM
Genetically enhanced eyesight, by
1,000 years time everyone will have
it.

HEATHER
...Right.

GEM
But, judging by how it curves, it
probably would encompass the whole
village.

HEATHER
I'm going back, we have to warn
people!

GEM
Yes, I'd like to look at the
village too...

They walk along the road.

GEM
What's the village called?

HEATHER
Gralagh.

GEM
Gralagh? That's a strange name.

HEATHER
It's celtic.

They reach Gralagh.

GEM
So how do you plan on warning
them? Running about like a
headless turkey, claiming death
awaits those who leave?

HEATHER
No... but I can't just let them
leave, let them die!

Gem takes a walk around.

GEM
Does The Author pick out places
that have problems, or does it just
happen?

HEATHER
What?

GEM
Well, The Author will sort it
out. He's probably figured it all
out with his sonic device, and is
on his way right now...

PAN TO:

ROAD.

THE AUTHOR and JOHN are walking along it.

THE AUTHOR
The further away we go, the more at
unease I feel.

JOHN
What do you mean?

THE AUTHOR
Something is wrong. I can just
sense it. Like an instinct.

JOHN
Is it serious?

THE AUTHOR
I don't know, I'm not
psychic. Well, not much. But you
know how you get that feeling
you're being watched... It's sorta
like that.

JOHN
Gem won't be happy if we go back,
it'll look like we don't trust her.

THE AUTHOR
Eh... well... the carnival was
nothing special anyway.

They turn, and go back down the road.

CUT TO:

GRALAGH. HEATHER'S HOME.

GEM is sitting.

HEATHER runs in.

HEATHER
A lot of people have found out for
themselves.

GEM
Good. Well, it's good nobody else
will die.

HEATHER
You seem to know a lot. Who are
you? What was that about...
genetic eyesight?

GEM
You won't believe me.

HEATHER
I can believe there's a force field
killing anyone who leave. I don't
see what could be less believable
than that.

GEM
Okay, I'm from the future. I met a
Time Lord called The Author who
took me back in time.

HEATHER
Oh.

Pause.

HEATHER
A... Time Lord?

GEM
I don't know. Nor does he, his
memory was taken.

HEATHER
You know, that sound an awful lot
like that weird sci-fi show, At-

CRASH.

Everything shakes.

Gem and Heather fall to the ground.

They look up out of the window.

The sky is WHITE.

They run out of the house.

CUT TO:

VILLAGE ROAD.

HEATHER and GEM run out.

Heather gasps.

GEM
What is it?

HEATHER
I remember... this happened
before... I'd forgotten, but now I
remember!

They run down the road.

GEM
There's nothing in the sky.

They look ahead.

Where the barrier ends, there is nothing but whiteness...

GEM
Or beyond the village. It's been
taken out of space, or something.

HEATHER
But that's not possible.

GEM
I've never seen this happen
before... But I've seen things just
as unlikely.

HEATHER
What about this Author of
yours? Can he help us?

GEM
(hesitantly)
...Yes. I think so. Yes, I'm sure
he can.

PAN TO:

HILL.

JOHN and THE AUTHOR walk along the hill.

JOHN
Have we gone too far? I thought
we'd have seen it by now?

THE AUTHOR
No, I'm sure it's just... a bit
further.

They walk a bit further.

JOHN
It definitely didn't take us this
long last time.

THE AUTHOR
(sighing)
You're right.

He looks at the SONIC DEVICE.

THE AUTHOR
Hold on... we can't have passed it,
the sonic device says it's... just
there...

He turns and points feebly in that direction, confused.

The Author takes a few steps forward.

THE AUTHOR
But it should just be there!

JOHN
It's gone?

The Author says nothing, which means yes.

They look at each other.

JOHN AND THE AUTHOR
Tardis!

They turn and run in the direction of the Tardis.

PAN TO:

GEM AND HEATHER.

They stand, staring into the nothing.

GEM
This happened before?

HEATHER
Yes! Many times! But... I'd
forgotten. I couldn't remember
anything. I...

She clasps her hands over her head.

HEATHER
Maybe I'm going mad. Maybe all of
this is just hallucinations.

GEM
I don't think so... Something must
be causing this.

She turns, and runs up the hill. Heather follows.

GEM
Or maybe it's some time... hole. I
don't know. But The Author is a
time expert, he'll know.

CUT TO:

GRALAGH.

HEATHER and GEM run onto the street.

Everyone is standing in fear, but they also remember.

MAN
Why is this happening?

WOMAN
I... I'd forgotten!

GEM
It's everywhere.

She looks at the other end of the village, and whiteness is
there also.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

JOHN is standing, watching THE AUTHOR run about.

THE AUTHOR
Yes, there's a massive time-spacial
disturbance! ... And Gem is caught
right in the middle of it.

JOHN
What will happen to her?

THE AUTHOR
She shouldn't be harmed, 4 times
out of 5... but if it gets sucked
into the Time Vortex... nothing can
save her.

JOHN
What can we do?

The Author works on the controls.

THE AUTHOR
The village seems to be time
locked. Anything leaving gets
destroyed. And right now, it's
suspended a millisecond out of sync
with the rest of the universe.

JOHN
Well, that shouldn't be too hard to
get into... right?

THE AUTHOR
I shouldn't think so.

He pulls a lever.

CUT TO:

EXT. TARDIS.

It dematerialises.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

It is a very violent journey.

JOHN
Is something wrong?

THE AUTHOR
Breaking into a time lock is never
easy!

CRASH.

Everything is flipped to the side.

CUT TO:

EXT. VILLAGE - HILL, AS THE VILLAGE ISN'T THERE.

THE TARDIS crashes from the sky, and lands.

JOHN and THE AUTHOR fall out.

JOHN
Did it work?

THE AUTHOR
No!

He kicks the Tardis.

THE AUTHOR
We can't get in. Gem is trapped.

PAN TO:

GRALAGH.

GEM is sitting with HEATHER

GEM
And before, it just went back to
normal?

HEATHER
I can't remember... It must have,
mustn't it?

CRASH.

It's back to normal.

Gem gasps.

The sky is there!

She leaps up, and looks out of the village.

She can see the countryside!

GEM
Heather, it went back!

Heather is standing up.

HEATHER
It... what? Who are you?

GEM
I...

She realises.

GEM
You don't remember, do you?

HEATHER
What?

GEM
And I can? External influence... ?

She sniffs.

GEM
What's that smell?

HEATHER
You're weird...

Heather wanders off.

Gem looks to the source of the smell.

GEM
That isn't a natural smell. It
smells... like the Tardis.

She finds the source of the smell coming from the ground.

She looks around.

GEM
Does anyone have a shovel!?

People look at her like she's crazy.

GEM
Please, it's important! I was here
a few days ago, and something got
buried here - long story.

A FARMER is there, holding a shovel.

FARMER
Will this do?

Gem smiles.

GEM
Yes. Thank you.

PAN TO:

JOHN AND THE AUTHOR.

They stare at the village that has miraculously appeared in
the distance.

JOHN
Come on, let's go find Gem!

THE AUTHOR
John, wait.

John stops.

THE AUTHOR
There's a barrier somewhere, that
the time lock is centered
inside. If you enter through it,
you'll be trapped too.

JOHN
What if we're already trapped?

The Author buzzes with THE SONIC DEVICE.

THE AUTHOR
No, I don't think so.

JOHN
Then what do we do?

THE AUTHOR
I'll go. You stay here. This
isn't your time period, so if
something happens to me, go into
the Tardis and Emergency Protocol 1
will take you home.

JOHN
But Author-

THE AUTHOR
I have to, John.

John sighs. He hasn't given in, for he has an idea...

JOHN
Okay.

THE AUTHOR
Oh, really? I thought you'd
complain more.

JOHN
I... understand how serious this
is.

THE AUTHOR
Thank you. Well... I'll hopefully
see you.

He walks off.

JOHN
Yeah...

John rushes into the Tardis.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

John runs about, looking for the Return Button. He finds
it, and presses it.

JOHN
Sorry Author...

CUT TO:

EXT. TARDIS.

The Tardis dematerialises.

PAN TO:

GRALAGH.

GEM digs.

HEATHER
Why did you give her the
shovel? What is she doing!?

Gem isn't listening. She's dug up something shiny...

GEM
(to self)
The smell is coming from this...

She picks up the DIAMOND, and holds it up.

HEATHER'S face lights up.

HEATHER
A... diamond?

Gem smells it.

GEM
Definitely smells like the Tardis.

She turns to the FARMER.

GEM
Thank you!

She hands him the shovel.

Gem examines the diamond.

GEM
Maybe this is causing the problems
with time! What would happen if I
destroy it, I wonder?

She holds it tightly in her fist and runs down the road.

CUT TO

ROAD.

She stops to get her breath back.

GEM
I don't know what sort of diamond
this is, but I don't think it'll be
easy to destroy...

She gets a thought.

GEM
But what if destroying it...
destroys the village? I wish the
Author was here...

Camera focuses on background... revealing the bridge... and
THE AUTHOR!

THE AUTHOR
(out of breath)
Gem!

GEM
Author!

THE AUTHOR runs towards her.

GEM
Stop! The barrier, you're nearly
past it!

The Author stops.

Gem runs down to the bridge.

GEM
There is a barrier is about
half-way through the
bridge. Anything going out of it-

THE AUTHOR
Is destroyed, I know, I did a
scan. You seem rather... trapped,
in there.

GEM
Where's John?

THE AUTHOR
In the Tardis. He should be safe.

Gem holds up the diamond.

GEM
What do you make of this? It
smells like the Tardis.

THE AUTHOR
You can smell the Tardis?

GEM
I - yeah?

THE AUTHOR
Genetically Enhanced Smell! Gotta
love humans...

GEM
Anyway, the diamond?

THE AUTHOR
Oh, yes.

He looks at it.

THE AUTHOR
That looks like a White Point Star,
from planet Gal...

He stops.

THE AUTHOR
Gal...

Pause.

THE AUTHOR
I... can't remember. But it has
Time Radiation all over it.

GEM
Do you think that is causing all of
this?

THE AUTHOR
Most definitely.

GEM
I can destroy it by throwing it out
of here!

THE AUTHOR
Don't. The branch of the Time
Vortex you're residing in will
become unstable, and you, along
with everyone in the village, will
die.

GEM
What can I do then?

THE AUTHOR
(very annoyed... and upset)
I don't know.

CRASH.

GEM
No! It's happening again!

The Author buzzes with the SONIC.

THE AUTHOR
You're falling out of time again!

GEM gasps, and drops the diamond.

It is RED HOT!

She starts fading away...

GEM
Author!!

THE AUTHOR
Gem!!

Vworp... vworp... woosh... woosh...

THE TARDIS materialises in the center of the bridge.

GEM appears fully, along with the VILLAGE.

THE AUTHOR
John!?

JOHN steps out.

JOHN
Author!

THE AUTHOR
What have you done, John?

Electrical sparks fly everywhere from the Tardis.

THE AUTHOR
You've exposed the Tardis to a
dangerous time rift! It will get
ripped apart!

JOHN
What!?

The Author turns around, thinking.

BANG - another spark.

THE AUTHOR
...Wait. The Tardis has broken
through the barrier. The barrier
still exists, but in the
Tardis. Gem - you can get out!

GEM
Are you sure?

She picks up some grass, and throws it. It isn't vaporised!

She runs across the bridge, safe!

JOHN
Author, the Tardis!

FLAMES appear around it.

THE AUTHOR
Stay here. Don't disobey me this
time!

He runs inside the Tardis, into the flames...

CRASH!!

The Tardis explodes.

Then DEMATERIALISES-

And then silence.

GEM
He's... gone.

JOHN
No, he'll be back. He'll have to
come back. We've faced worse than
this!

Behind them, the Tardis materialises.

JOHN
I knew it!

The Author opens the door.

THE AUTHOR
Inside, quickly. I mean NOW!

They sense how panicked he sounds, so run inside
immediately.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

THE AUTHOR pulls a lever.

CUT TO:

EXT. TARDIS.

TARDIS dematerialises.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

THE AUTHOR
I made a mistake.

GEM
What mistake?

THE AUTHOR
(bitter)
I tried to free the Tardis. I
should have let it burn.

JOHN
Why?

THE AUTHOR
I broke the force field. The atoms
and molecules of the village are
mixing with the atoms and molecules
of the rest of the world.

GEM
And?

THE AUTHOR
The ones inside the village have
absorbed massive amounts of Time
Radiation. I mean massive, not the
small stuff we get. That diamond
was powerful... I don't know how it
got there, maybe as a meteor, but
it created the force field. It
however, had more radiation than
the rest of the village put
together.

JOHN
But you haven't explained, what
will happen when the atoms and
molecules mix!

The Author hesitates.

THE AUTHOR
Billions upon trillions of them,
crashing and colliding with each
other at enormous
velocities. You're a scientist
John... What do you think is bound
to happen in at least one?

John figures out.

JOHN
No... !

GEM
What?

THE AUTHOR
Nuclear fission.

Gem also realises...

CUT TO:

GRALAGH.

It explodes in a NUCLEAR EXPLOSION.

CUT TO:

INT. TARDIS.

THE AUTHOR
Only a small explosion. It'll
probably be contained within where
the force field was.

GEM
That's... that's awful!

THE AUTHOR
I'm sorry. This is my fault.

JOHN
No, if anything it's mine. You
didn't know.

The Author isn't convinced.

THE AUTHOR
So, where next? The Emerald Shores
of Metebelis II? The Fifteenth
Broken Moon of the Medusa
Cascade? Or, how about, 505th
century Earth! Humans begin
evolving away from their natural
bodies into dragonflies, it's
fascinating!

Gem and John are both still in shock.

THE AUTHOR
Or... random? Yeah, random.

He pulls the lever.

Shot of John and Gem...

CUT TO:

END CREDITS.
