Opening The Door

Hunt’s P.O.V

The battle was fierce; bullets flew all over as the Canadian troops ducked behind cover from the American’s superior firepower. We were greatly outnumbered, 5 platoons consisting of 20 of the best soldiers each had been sent.

The satellite telemetry from the Canadian NasCorp war satellite had shown light defence in the city, but it was far fro light. Hover jeeps and corpses lay burning everywhere, I, commander of the first and most elite platoon hid behind one of the jeeps.

I took my radio and ordered, " Squad one attack the building from the south, it is imperative we take out their defence turrets before the assault on the target commences."

I heard a whining sound and knew I had been spotted, cursing out loud in french I began to run away from the jeep as fast as I could. In that moment there was a large explosion as the jeep flew up in the air as a large ball of fire and melted metal.

Nearly hitting me I turned to the Americans and fired my German XM12 rifle in their direction, the soldier with the bazooka was killed as along with the soldiers that had been defending him. Another enemy squadron noticing this turned on me and fired in my direction.

Bullets chewed the ground very close to me as I ran, diving behind a solid titanium wall that was bent and partially melted from some sort of advanced mortar. As I landed hard upon the ground I groaned in pain, looking down I seen a bullet had got him in the side.

I ignored the pain as squad two came and joined me behind the wall, lead by warrant officer Wilsons. I turned to him and said, " We’re under some heavy fire but if squad one succeeds were going to attack from the main entrance. If that fails you will lead your team to the extraction point!"

Wilson confirmed the order as I tried to communicate with squad one, but the only response I got was dead air. Changing frequencies I communicated with the base of operations, " Things ain’t going as planned general, I’ll be sending squad two to extraction point now and continuing on my own."

I stopped to get up from cover and fire on oncoming American soldiers, explosions thundered near their cover as they kept on firing. Ducking again the General replied, " Negative lieutenant, you and the remainder of your platoon will stick to the plan, take out those defence turrets now or I’ll court martial you.!"

The wall was getting quite a beating, as I led my troops inside some abandoned building for cover he responded, " With all due respect sir you can just cram your fucking orders up your ass! My soldiers are getting out of here right now and I don’t give a rat’s ass if you wanna court martial me or shoot me. They are getting killed left and right, they would die in vein"

The radio went silent as a section of the wall suddenly blew up, a metal shard flying and flying into the head of one of the soldiers. We all ducked and when the debris stopped we got into firing positions and awaited the enemies.

They came flooding in like water breaking through a dam, they were weak but there were so many of them that it was difficult to keep them back. A response came from the General, " That is insubordination! You and your platoon are to get the secret weapon even if it cost the lives of your entire platoon! Now do it or I will execute you myself!"

As I fired, hitting the enemies in the heads to save ammunition I retorted, " Then either get your ass over here or hope I survive, my troops are going back and that is final!"

Smashing the radio I yelled as soon as the eminent danger was stalled, " Retreat to the extraction point Beta 5 now!"

Most of the soldiers left, shooting as they ran at far off enemies but Wilson crouched behind the cover behind me and said, " I ain’t leaving you sir, but how are two of us gonna take out the turrets and defeat the security and steal the weapon?"

It was understandable that he was asking this, I replied confidently, " Its my own personal plan in case the mission went FUBAR, there’s a secret entrance that leads right inside the base past all their security. With any luck we can reach it and enter the base without much of a fight."

Of course in this case not much of a fight meant we would have to fire their way to the trench and traverse the short but deadly distance while trying to defend ourselves, after that it would be a walk in the park, a dangerous park full of dangers and death.

They counted to three and began running, firing as we ran toward the far enough trenches. Suddenly a new danger I hadn’t expected came, on our way there we met heavily armoured sentries with strange futuristic weapons.

The American Technology Institute, once a large five story warehouse had been changed to the location of their top secret technology of warfare and others, it was not their only base like this but the weapon my superiors wanted was in there.

The sentries pointed their heavy machine guns at us and began to fire, large armour piercing bullets thudded all around us as we ran as if our asses were on fire. Returning fire most of the bullets reflected off their heavy armour, out of all the sentries two of them fell from the assault.

As I dived in head first into the trench Wilson fell beside me, I had been hit by five of the armour piercing bullets, blood pouring in large quantities. I grabbed ammunition for my assault rifle and desert eagles and began to crawl to the secret entrance.

There were dead bodies everywhere; Canadian and American alike. They were all coming down on my location, firing from every direction I was barely covered from their attacks, bullets whizzing right over my head.

I crawled as quickly as I could, keeping low but the pain from my injury was hindering my speed and reducing my odds of survival. My military fatigues were ripped and covered in dirt and fresh blood. The smell of death and decay in the trenches were unbearable, but in training I had been taught to ignore the deaths of my comrades and the smell of death.

My battle armour was completely useless, almost completely chewed up from the fire power of the weaker guns, my entire torso was bruised everywhere. Suddenly a bullet got me in the ass, I looked back and swore and kept on going.

The pain was extreme, another bullet got me on the shoulder; but no matter what I was not going to abandon my mission. The pain of all my combined injuries was excruciating, bleeding savagely he finally found secret entrance. Pressing the hidden button the metal doors slid open and I dived in head first as the doors quickly shut behind me.

The tunnel went down fifty feet in a perfect 45- degree angle going down; I came crashing down against some sort of shelf. It shook with impact sending stuff to the ground but did not move, pain rippled throughout my bones like the usual amount of traffic in Toronto.

Quickly pulling the XM-12 from his back he checked the room to see if he had been spotted. This was apparently a storage room and no one had bothered to place a camera in this room, nothing but canned beans.

I took the PAI( Portable Artificial Intellegence) from my back pocket and placed it on the ground and activated it. A holographic projection of his commanding officer General Loxfurd came up.

I asked in a hushed voice, " Locate the room code named I’m high".

I had come up with the name myself, thinking no one would expect such top secret information to have that name. The AI searched for a second and said, " It has been downloaded on your helmet map, your destination in the map is also noted so you know how near you are. Is that all?"

I de-activated the AI and before doing anything else cleaned my wounds to at least stop the bleeding. Placing the helmet on my head, sliding the goggles down over my eyes the map showed up.

It was in the top left corner, the room he had to reach was the bleeping red dot and I was the green dot. I smiled at how it was so much like a video game, but it worked very well.

Looking at my watch he looked as the timer counted down, ten seconds left until he actually commence the operation. The beeper went out, as predicted the power suddenly went out.

Activating the night vision mode I slowly opened the door and entered the corridor. I had my desert eagles along with my XM-12 but those would make too much noise so I took out his 9 inch combat knife, I began to move quietly straight.

If I kept on this direction I would simply have to take a left and go through the nearest doors. Suddenly three guards walking in a triangular formation spotted me, they had probably been doing a sweep of the base for intruders and now they had found one.

I had to act fast, before they could raise their weapons I dived on the nearest soldier. Stabbing him in the heart, I then tripped the two other soldiers. As I got up one of the downed soldiers stabbed me in the leg, plunging the knife up to the hilt.

I fell hard, losing grip of my own knife as the burning sensation of the cold metal got worse and worse. I gritted my teeth in pain to stop myself from yelling in pain, kicking one soldier hard under the chin I heard the neck break with a loud snap. Satisfied by the result I kicked the other soldier knocking him out.

More guards had probably been alerted by all the commotion and were bearing down on my destination. Forgetting that since this was not an official base there was no emergency power for the doors I dived head first expecting it to automatically slide open.

I hit the metal door adding a migraine to my collection of physical pain. Some of my injuries had restarted to bleed, then five soldiers clad in light armour, shotguns and flashlights arrived.

I tossed off his goggles to prevent getting blinded and raised my hands saying in a french Canadian accent, " Damn door wouldn’t open, ya know what I mean eh?"

The nearest soldier put the shotgun to the back of my neck and handcuffed me with magnetic handcuffs. As soon as the soldier had my hands cuffed and was about to get my weapons I kneed the soldier in the gut and grabbed him as a hostage.

The four guards pointed their guns at me, pushing the hostage in the guards sending them sprawling to the ground I pulled the knife out of my leg and with uncanny skill threw the blood stained knife in the only standing guard’s head.

Hoping to make less noise I jumped on one guard going for his shotgun and knocked him out with the titanium handcuffs. Grabbing the shotgun I grabbed it by the barrel and knocked out the other soldiers.

None of the guards had the keys for the handcuffs leaving me in a situation where not only had I sustained serious injuries that would have killed a less hardened soldier but I was also handcuffed.

Putting my knife back in its scabbard in my sleeve I pulled the knife out of the dead soldier’s head and stabbed it in between the sliding doors. Trying to pry it open it finally moved a bit right before the blade snapped, I shoved my fingers in the space and opened them.

My hands went up to activate my night vision goggles but remembered that I hadn’t had enough time to get them before entering the room. I had a flash light on my belt but because of the handcuffs I could not reach it.

With all my strength I pulled both ends apart from each other. Any normal soldier could not have done this but I was an elite. I may have had the rank of lieutenant but I was superior to the others, my strength and agility were modified.

I had been training since childhood to become the perfect soldier, learning military tactics and as I got older, artificially modified to be stronger. With a bit of struggle I broke the handcuffs in half.

Feeling the pain I said to himself as I reached for the satellite, " All these modifications and I can’t even heal my injuries."

The room was small and circular, it was filled with advanced weaponry and armour. My superiors would have transported all this stuff into their stealth cargo ship a long time ago but the Americans had managed to build a perfect defence against such transportation technology.

However with these shield penetration tags I placed them on all the technological inventions in the room, but the secret weapon I was after was in the vault door at the end of the room.

Checking my packs I could not find the explosives, I must have dropped them at some point on the surface without noticing. This was indeed a snag in what would have been a perfect plan. If Wilsons had survived or the first plan had succeeded we would have had explosives.

I would have to improvise, fortunately I had plenty of technology to improvise with. Just as I began looking closer at the technology the power came back on. I smiled at my luck putting the flashlight away.

Before anyone came to check if the technology was still functional I threw my tactical armour to the ground and put on one of the experimental ones. It felt lighter and I was sure it was probably superior as well.

Grabbing what appeared to be high powered energy rifle I aimed it at the vault door and had my finger on the micro target, ready to fire when it suddenly made a clicking sound.

A soft hiss came out of steam filled the room, it dissipated very quickly as the metal door swung open. Inside the room was nothing but a pedestal, upon it was a sphere of unknown metallic alloy.

According to information from the Canadian Main Intelligence centre this sphere was a nuclear bomb. All my injuries were bleeding once more so I took a satellite communicator and contacted CMIC directly, " All technology is tagged, I’ll advise you when the bomb is also tagged."

The moment I touched the orb there was a large flash and suddenly I found himself in another room completely. I stood in some ancient hall, it was very dark and smelt old, as though no one had been here for quite some time.

Taking out the flashlight I was about to begin exploring when I suddenly felt extremely weak all over. I started to become very dizzy, turning back for the sphere it was gone as well as the pedestal it had been on.

The entire room was beginning to spin as I looked for something to support myself against, but it was too late and I collapsed on the ground on the brink of death.
