It was pitch black. But it didn’t matter. I could still see.
I ran, ran as fast as I could allow myself to go. I didn’t hear anything except for my own breathing. Other than that, I was completely silent as I sprinted through the woods. I don’t think they found my trail yet, but I couldn’t afford to slow down. They were capable of tracking me as I had not yet concealed my scent and they brought out the bloodhounds.
I had to get out of this country and swim to the United States. I would be safe there, hopefully.
There, it was faint, but I heard it. A soft howl as the hounds found my scent. They started to trail me now; I had to move faster. Faster and faster, soon the branches were flying past me as I sped through the trees. I reached a small clearing in the woods and a blast of wind slowed me down. I stopped and saw a helicopter with a spotlight trained on me. I squinted as the harsh light peered down on me.
“Mayu. Return to the base now!” someone called from the helicopter. I glared and sent a quick slash of water at the blades. The helicopter plummeted to the ground.
I took off in the opposite direction that I was heading towards. Long before I reached it, I could hear the eerie calm of the waves crashing against the cliff. I slow down as I reached the edge, finally coming to a stop.
I slowed my breathing down and jumped. As I dove, I heard the slow chopping of a helicopter come up behind me. Time seemed to slow down as the chopper spotted and shot a net at me. I spun around as I did so, I released thousands of tiny ice shards, cutting the net into tiny pieces and I pierced the water. I allowed myself to dive deeper out of sight and transformed into a creature of the deep. A mermaid. With a flick of my tail, I sped off in the direction of the United States.
