The Runaway Assassin

Chapter 3,

It took a month for me to reach the shores of the United States as I had been taking small breaks in underwater caves to avoid being detected.  Although the swim was relatively smooth, I had several problems with sharks, submarines, and fishers.  Let’s just say the nets will have a few holes in them, and the submarines will not reach the surface again, unharmed that is.

To avoid a panic, I crawled up into a cave as a human in rags.  I changed my appearance; my long black hair became shorter, layered and turned into a rich chocolate brown.  My skin became tanner, only slightly. Only my dark red, almost brown, eyes stayed the same.  My build became less of a fighter’s, to more of a dancer’s.  And my frame became more petite.

As I sat in the cave, I wondered where I was.  I knew I was off the Atlantic Ocean, since I went around Africa.  And that I was in the upper part of the United States.  So I figured I was in Delaware, New Jersey, or Maryland.

I stayed in the cold damp cave for a few days, watching the kids, fresh out of school, play at the beach.  They were building sandcastles and splashing in the cold surf.  I survived off of the fish I could catch as I swam at night.  It wasn’t the safest thing to do; I almost got my leg bitten off by a shark.  At least that night’s meal was nice.  It was a while since I had good shark meat. Other than that, the only other fish I ate were small guppies, small but plentiful.  But they were extremely hard to catch by yourself.

My days were spent in the cave trying to figure out what to do next.  I couldn’t stay in the cave forever.  All I did was sleep and play with the water, bending the water into different shapes, and molding it to my will.  Most of the time, it was of my old friend Kyo.  But she died when I was five.  Hatoyama decided to send her on a deadly mission.  She never came back.  It was my fault, I should have stopped her, but I didn’t.  She was my only friend from the headquarters; she kept me there happily.

One day, while I was drifting off to sleep, I heard excited shouts of teens around my age.  From what I could hear, they were bullying a boy the same age by throwing a ball and hitting him hard.  I lifted my head and watched them as they repeatedly threw a red dodge ball at his head.  I sat up and moved further into the dark.  They seemed to keep getting closer and closer to the cave.  One guy, a big burly male, threw the ball hard and hit the boy in the back, forcing him into the sand.  The ball bounced off his back and rolled into the cave near my feet.  As it bumped into my feet, I picked it up, studying the rubber ball.  I rolled the ball in between my hands, debating on what to do with it.

The big burly male started to walk towards the cave, to retrieve the ball.  He peered into the cave, glancing around to see the ball.  Luckily, he didn’t see me as I wound up my arm and chucked the ball at his head.  It hit him square in the face and he fell backwards.  His nose was bleeding and he was knocked out cold.  The ball laid by his side peacefully, with only a small smear of blood on it.

His friends took their attention off of the boy and ran towards their unconscious friend.  I shrank back into the shadows as they came closer to him.  The boy saw this as a chance to run away, so he scrambled to his feet and took off towards the other end of the beach.  The group peered into the cave and looked around, I growled instinctively, instantly regretting it since they started to walk further into the cave.

“What was that noise?”  one of the males asked.

“I don’t know… I’m scared.” whined on of the prissy girls.  She clung to his arm.

I transformed into a large dog and growled louder, and puffed up my fur to make myself appear larger.  My eyes glowed in the dark.  I started to walk out into the light and barred my fangs.

The prissy clingy girl saw me first and shrieked.  I cringed; she hurt my ears with her whiny little voice. Seeing me, the male widened his eyes in fear.  He turned around and flew out of the cave.  The other members saw me and picked up the unconscious male and ran away scared, leaving the ball behind.

I de-transformed and walked out of the cave.  I picked up the ball and wiped off the blood.  I looked around, there was nobody left on the beach.  I started to walk towards the road, but I suddenly got the feeling someone was watching me.  I turned around just in time to see a flash of blonde.

“Whoever you are, stop following me!”  I called out in English.  No response.  So I kept walking, yet the same person was still following.  I quickly glanced back and saw it was the boy who was being picked on.  Still waking, I suddenly turned around and hurled the all at him.  I made sure to miss slightly, but still close enough to scare him.  He ducked and curled up into a ball.

I walked over to him and said “What are you following me for?”  He only whimpered in response.  “Huh?  What are you following me for?” I asked once again.  He still gave no answer.  I grabbed the boy by his collar and brought him to eye level.  “Do I have to ask again?”  I demanded.  I shook him slightly.

He finally spoke, “I was right.  I did see someone in the cave.  Thank you for helping me.”  He managed to squeak out.

I dropped him and walked away.  “I didn’t do it out of the kindness of my heart.  They were disrupting my sleep.  Anyway if that guy walked into the cave, he would have seen me.  That’s all.”  I waked over to the road and saw a sign that read “Route 422.”  I turned around to ask the boy where I was but he was gone.  Shrugging my shoulders, I walked onto the street and turned north, proceeding up to where my new life began.
