Fires blaze along with bright string lights. They hang on the buildings while things burn in the middle of the street. Everybody hangs around them. Even Storm is there. She sits by Zoie, Ryker, Zoie’s boyfriend and Jaiden. The only person who is missing is Kade. Storm sits there scanning the area frequently while everybody else starts to sing “We are the Champions” by Queen even though they are all horrible. They laugh and sing and drink all at the same time. It’s one giant celebration. Eventually, Storm turns around to face Zoie while she sits there laughing in her love’s arms.
Where is Kade?
He never comes to these things. Actually, he prefers to
stay away from us at all times.
I don’t know. He’s weird.
It’s the truth. There’s something about him…
He moved people with his mind like a superhero.
Normally he hangs out in the public library if you
want to find him.
We need to talk.
Storm stands up and leaves them. Their singing rings on in the background as she wanders away into the darkness of the city. Soon it’s silent. She looks around at the crumbling city. Every now and then something scurries across the ground and she jumps. Just rat. Or a snake. Maybe even a giant cockroach. Soon music sweeps to life In her ears as she continues to walk around. (The Royal We by the Silversun Pickups starts to play. This is Storm’s other theme.)
We are ready for the siege
We are armed up to the teeth
We care for how you live and breathe
Release whats broken underneath
How many times do you wanna die?
Something moves in the darkness and Storm comes to a stop looking into a dark alley. Although everything is dark here. Little lights line the path but they do not help out much. Nothing around her is seen. Although a few blocks away she spots a shining light. Whatever is moving in the darkness is bigger than everything else. Gulping she moves a little faster picking up her pace as she continues towards the light.
The closer she comes the louder the noise becomes until suddenly something flies out of the darkness throwing her into one of the other buildings. It is Adam. He slams her back into the wall while gripping her throat as he glares at her.
You ruined everything!
What are you talking about?
You and Kade shouldn’t have been there!
He throws her across the street and when she gets the chance she starts to run away trying to escape. But Adam is faster than her. A lot faster. The light is close. It’s in the library but she is unable to make it. Adam grabs onto the back of her shirt jerking her backwards shoving her face first into the ground. His other hand shoots out and a blade falls out of his sleeve.
I am going to kill you!
Adam flies backwards into the air. Kade steps out holding onto a lantern. He holds onto it while staring at Adam. Such focus. A small scream escapes Adam’s mouth before he drops to the ground and Kade continues to walk forward.
Leave her alone!
He kicks Adam in the chest knocking him over again before punching him while he is down. His nose breaks and blood gushes out onto the ground. Then Kade takes Storm by the hand leading her away towards the library while Adam lies on the ground. He remains there. They start up a small white stone staircase that mocks marble. Kade opens the door allowing Storm to walk inside first. She enters an old library that has lots of dust. Lanterns hang everywhere but they are not lit with flames instead, they have flickering electrical lights.
What are you doing?
Who are you?
Who are you?
I bet it’s not nearly as interesting.
How come you didn’t know about…?
My mom never explained things to me. I wasn’t
even allowed to watch the stars at night.
If I tell you, will you tell me who you are?
No because my secret is a lot better.
You’re obnoxious.
So are you.
Then why did you save me?
Kade stands there in silence before he starts to walk away into a large book room. Storms follows him into the next room watching as he climbs up onto a wooden ladder that slides around the room. He pushes himself away from where it originally stood. He launches himself around to another section until Storm runs over stopping him with her foot while she remains on the ground looking up at him.
Why did you save me?
Because some days, I’m the good guy.
I hate you! You’re so mysterious!
I thought women digged that.
You idiot.
What are you doing here? Why aren’t you
with everybody else?
Storm shrugs and suddenly becomes quiet as she looks off at nothing.
I don’t like getting attached to people.
I’m always having to leave to follow Roulette.
What’s her story?
She’s my sister.
Adam is my brother.
Slowly, he climbs down the ladder and stands there gazing at her while smiling. In his hand is a book. It’s thick and newer than the other ones. Kade hands it to her and she takes it from him but never looks at the cover.
This will help you make your decision.
What are you talking about?
I want you to come with me. I’ll help teach you
how to fight and so much more. Your help is
Where are we going?
We’re leaving this planet.
The dusty book cover is hard to make out at first until she brushes the dust off. It’s from years and years ago. In golden letters it says: Adapting to a Whole New World: Guide to an Expanding Universe
Years and years ago we left Earth or as many people
call it now, Gaia when they realized there was more
land for the taking. People were living too close to
each other. Over population was becoming a problem
and the destruction of the human race seemed imminent.
Ok. So I exaggerated in a few places but it sounded
super cool.
My dad used to be in the air force. He was positioned or
stationed…um I have no idea how to phrase it but anyhow,
he was located in the Space Fleet. My mom never liked to
talk about everything that was going on in the world. You
could say that she really sheltered me.
What happened?
What makes you think something happened?
Your mom was afraid of you knowing something.
They got divorced. It was bad.
You’re lying to me.
No I’m not.
You’re lying about lying.
Look I just don’t want to talk about it. Besides
you shouldn’t be talking Mr. Kade-Isn’t-My-
She starts to back away from him gripping the book under her arm while Kade stares at her.
I bet my reasons are better than yours.
Savannah, there’s one thing that you need to be
aware of about the universe.
There’s a war going on. I don’t know how to
explain it but basically when we leave Gaia
be aware that not everywhere is safe. It’s a
different world like back when countries still
fought on Gaia. The moons and other galaxies
are in control of others and they are unfriendly.
I sort of knew about all of that. My dad fought in
that war.
He’s fighting in that world. Sorry but it’s still
going on.
Storm stares at him for a split second before turning around. She starts to violently tremble as she rushes out of there. Not once does Kade go after her but she runs out of the library and falls onto the stairs where she starts to sob.
Savannah runs across the yard towards Chandra as a school bus drives away. She throws her arms around her mom for a few seconds before pulling away and starts to cry. Alarmed. Her mom tries to comfort her by running a hand across her back.
Savannah, what’s wrong? My daughter. My darling.
People make fun of me because I don’t have a dad.
Just tell them that we got divorced.
But that’s not what really…
Tell them that.
I miss him.
Chandra just hugs here and now the two are crying as they both think about Tolen.
Storm sits there. Tears no longer run down her cheeks as she blankly stares off into space biting her lower lip. Nothing moves at first. All is dark. Suddenly, a light falls upon her from behind and she slowly stands up. It is as if an angel is descending from heaven. Gradually, she turns around to face Kade.
What are you still doing here?
I came back.
Savannah, I can read you like a book. You’re
lying to me. What are you still doing here?
My dad died. I don’t really know how. But
everybody tells me about how he stayed on his
spaceship when they were under attack. He saved
my mom, stayed on and the ship was blown up. I
have lived my whole life being told that I would
never be anything like him. He was extraordinary,
a hero and what do I do? I steal cars. All I want is
to be like him. To be a hero someday. And I don’t
know how to do that. Some reason…some reason
I think coming with you might help.
I want to come with you Kade.
They just stand there staring at each other. The lantern that Kade is holding slips from his hands and he throws his arms around Storm. She starts to sob and buries her face against his shoulder. This is the moment where we see the old Savannah not Storm. She is able to show all of her emotions while she clings to Kade sobbing lost in thought of her father. The one she never met and never will.
Kade
