Scene Two
Silence.There’s nothing.No disturbances.There’s an open road that cuts through a large open field heading towards a huge city that spirals towards the heavens.Year after year it seems as if the people building it want it to touch the hands of God.
The silence is shattered.There’s the sound of two roaring engines but the cause is unknown.At first they are loud before they die down to a gentle purr.Soon two cars fly across the road with dust swirling around them.Both are beaten up cars that were nice once years and years ago (today they would be considered great cars).The cars duke it out as they race.One pulls in front a bit then the other one does.
In a dark blue car is SAVANNAH, 17.She sits in the driver seat gripping the steering wheel as she glances out the window at a man driving the other car but the view of him is obscured by a sexy woman sitting in the passenger seat.She blows a kiss at Savannah to mock her.Shaking her head, Savannah looks through the window shield.
Savannah keeps one hand on the steering wheel while she reaches out with the other one.Her hand touches the volume button on the stereo system but she never looks at it.She is focused on the road that stretches one and one before her.
(to self, mocks the man she’s racing)
at me.I have a sexy girl friend who gives me blow
She twists the volume button and starts to blast: Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler.
Jackass meet Speed Racer!Let’s see how you like
Suddenly, her car lurches forward as she swings in front of the other car throwing him off course a bit before swerving back into place where she speeds up while the man attempts to gain control of the car again.Savannah goes faster and faster.The vroom of the car fades away into the music that she is listening to.Even though it is in the car it is heard in the background.(In a way, this becomes known as Savannah’s theme due to the words of the song and her issues.)
Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach

Racing on the thunder end rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet
The other car starts to catch up to her but gradually, they come to a cross roads.Out of both sides, police vehicles fly out and create a road block.
Savannah frowns at the sight of them.Whirling red and blue lights almost blind her as she slams on her brakes swerving to the ride.Quickly, she turns her wheel to the left trying to help stop it as she flies forward still at an incredible speed.
SAVANNAH’S POV: CAR MIRROR
She catches a glimpse in her mirror as the other car speeds away leaving her alone.
Savannah looks up as one of the cars rolls towards her transforming into what looks an awful lot like a human police officer.It slowly comes towards her car door.
I hate my life.
She turns off the music before rolling down the window and looks out it at the robot officer as it leans over staring into her car.
Hello again officer.I promise you that after this
time I swear it won’t happen again.If you ever
met that bastard…you’d understand.
A car door flies open and then closed as somebody leaps out of the car.It is ZACHARY, 19, Savannah recognizes him because he acts like a brother to her.He stands there staring at her through the window shield.Savannah sits there griping the wheel to the car with big bug eyes as she bites her lips.
I can handle this boys.Give her a break.We need
to have a serious discussion about this.
Zachary walks over to Savannah while the police officer transforms back into a police car and rolls away behind her that way she is unable to roll away.The closer he comes to the car the more Savannah’s eyes start to drop.Soon Zachary leans against the side of the car.There’s a long moment of silence.
Are you aware that laws are not meant to be broken?
That’s a mystery.I think they’re more like guidelines.
And see that is why your mom hates you.
She hates me for other reasons but she won’t tell me.
Why Savannah?Why this time?
Well I was stealing some cars and this jackass came up.
He tried to start a fight but instead, I told him I would
race him since we all know I’ll win.There’s a reason
why you call me Speed Racer.
They’re gonna be pissed if I let you go again.
Half of them are robots.They don’t give a shit.
I hate you.
You’re just saying that, right?
I wish I was.
But you’re my brother.
Not by birth and not all the time.Only when your
Mom isn’t around and that’s only because my dad
saved you or something along with your mom.
Wish I could say the same.Where’s the driver’s
(nervous laugh)
Ha ha wow.I have to say.That’s a mighty
interesting story…
Savannah stands there holding onto a sign with a long number on it along with her last name then her first.Somebody takes her picture before she turns allowing them to take a picture of the side of her face.
Savannah sits against a wall while singing a song.She is all alone in a cell.Across the hallway are a bunch of other extremely tough looking inmates who stare at her as if she is their prey yet she pays no attention.Not only does this.She actually insists on standing up and walking to the bars while belting out a random song getting louder and louder.
A human guard comes over hitting the bars with a flashlight and stares at her.
Are you trying to get yourself killed?
You’re insane.
Oh believe me.You have no idea.I’m in here
for raping and murdering sixty people before I
cut up their bodies into tiny pieces and hid them
in their houses.After that, I would leave a map
behind for their loved ones and make it a lot like
a scavenger hunt.
You’re a sick, sick person!
You know what…that’s what everybody said right
before I killed them.That’s so funny.But don’t
worry…you’re not next.Mr. Zachary is.Then it’s
Doctor enters.He stands there folding his hands across his chest while staring at Savannah.She stops almost instantly while staring at him.This is the father figure in her life.She backs away from the bars and sits down all by herself before he turns to the human saying something.Silence.Savannah ignores them while she sits there staring at the ground.Soon they come to unlock the door.The keys jingle and all but silence.
The Doctor leads Savannah to a car and opens the door for her.She climbs in meekly.He slams the door shut.Silence.Then he climbs into the driver’s seat and they just sit there unable to look at each other for the longest time before the Doctor turns to face Savannah.
Your father would be ashamed of you.
I know.My mom tells me that every day.
And she should.Are you ready to go home?
Um well do I have a choice?
What’s my other option?
The doctor points in the direction of the city and she follows with her gaze.
You start walking that way.
Savannah looks at him.Tears well up in her eyes for the first time as she actually shows emotion.She frantically looks back and forth between him and the city.All that is heard is the pounding of her heart and her speedy breathes as she starts to hyperventilate.Her hand grips the handle to the door.Silence.It lasts for a few seconds before she pops the door open.It almost sounds like an explosion after all the silence.
I love you.
I wish I could say the same about you.
Thank you for everything…dad.
I’m not your dad.I’m nowhere even close to how
good of a man he was.Nor would you.You’re not
worthy of being his daughter.
Savannah backs out of the car while staring at him.It’s the only light in the dark night.Gradually, she turns around looking out at the distant city.She starts to walk towards it listening to the car turn on behind her as she pushes herself to walk faster.The headlights hit her for a split second before the car turns around heading in the opposite direction.Not once does she look back.All she does is walk into the darkness of the night.
