Arthur C Clarke was a master of the short story. This one is for him.

Wrote at the same time as The Optimist, also featured in here; it is in some peculiar way dedicated to a woman I have never met called Kate. She likes old cars, nuff said :) View table of contents...

There was nothing that Commander James Hansen could not fix. His reputation had started from cadet school back in the day. No matter what went wrong, when it came to Hansen you gave the man the right tool and ten minutes later the impossible was fixed and ready to fly again.

As he looked at the Lander in front of him it took only five minutes to realise that a three quarter inch sprocket would do the job nicely. A little turn here, a knock there and it would be as good as new. He even knew exactly what model sprocket would do the job.

Dejectedly Commander Hansen looked up into the night sky as the Earth slowly started to rise over the short horizon and wondered where on the moon he could find a standard 1948 Morris Minor removable toolkit.
