Hands That Pray

By Jeff Shumate © 2010

Out in the schoolyard the boys would play,

And a childhood bully crossed the line one day,

He teased a little girl about her face,

She wore a mask to hold her skin in place,

A little girl's eyes filled with tears that day,

And I cried inside in a different way,

Cause I was there when it happened that day,

I wish I could forget, but there aint no way,

The camper exploded as I sat right by,

Still to this day I can hear them cry,

My best buddies family got burned inside,

They said it was a miracle that no one died,

I watched the people from the church hold hands and pray,

I didn't believe in a God and I cried that day,

I didn't want to see my friends hurt that way,

Couldn't wait to get home to my daddy that day,

As I watched the tears dropping down from her eyes,

I choked down my anger from inside,

It was time to teach this boy a lesson my own way,

So I whipped him in the schoolyard later that day,

My friend and his family had to move away,

And after many years now I want to say,

Thanks for taking me camping with your church that day,

When this life happens they showed me how to pray,

And now I know what they were trying to say,

Lord, life's really hard and we need you today,

Bring us your comfort to soothe our pain,

Lord, life's really hard and we need you today,

I finally see what they were saying that day!

Lord, life's really hard and I need you today!
