With these tears in my eyes I can't see
the one I'm writing to over seas
Her eyes are the color of the land she is from
and her hair is the color of dark rum.
As I write to her while I'm here at home
I know that she's there and all alone
I knew I had to write, for there's no other way
And I'll keep her letters with me til my dying day.
As I hold your letter I'd rather be holding you
cause a letter or a call will never do
I'd rather have you right here beside me
But these tears in my eyes won't let me see.
For I'll never be with you in Ireland
looking in your eyes of emerald green
just to be walking hand in hand
with the prettiest girl I've ever seen.
All I hold in my hand is your picture
when I really want to hold your face
I'm sending you this piece of scripture
As I sit all alone with out your grace.
I miss your letters as you wrote me
about the chains that won't set you free
and the dragons that won't let you be
or the knight that you will never see.
My letter was returned the other day
with another from a friend of yours
She said she read it at your grave
I hope that it reaches heaven's shores.
For I'll never be with you in Ireland
looking in your eyes of emerald green
just to be walking hand in hand
with the prettiest girl I've ever seen.
