The following night on Raw, Shane & Sheamus showed off their Main-Event Titles. The General Manager, John Laurinitis and informed the pair that they must face Cody Rhodes & The Big Show in a Losers VS Winners match. Though reluctant to have the match, they agreed.

The night was fairly bare. MVP had a rematch against Ted Dibiase but retained. The Main Event was quick. Show walked in and his a WMD on Cody and left the arena. Shane pinned Cody for the victory. Shane left the ring. As he approached the entrance area, Cody started talking through a microphone. "I demand that I get a Number 1 contender's shot for my WWE Championship, and if that means taking you down, I will".

On Friday Night Smackdown, Shane had a match against John Morrison. John and Shane shook hands and started the match. Shane immediately took control. Morrison tried to escape but couldn't pull it off. Shane put him in the Hummingbird position. Just as he did this, Cody hit him from behind. The DQ bell rang. Cody grabbed Shane's head and hit him with a Cross-Rhodes. John Morrison helped Shane by hitting a Dropkick on Cody. Cody fell out of the ring. Shane and John Morrison shook hands and Shane left the ring.

That weekend on wwe.com there was an article that reported John Morrison facing off against Cody Rhodes the following week on Smackdown. The winner would get a title shot against Shane at Extreme Rules. Shane was also scheduled to have a match against a potential challenger for the WWE Championship, Ted Dibiase. If Shane defeated Ted on Raw than he would get to choose the stipulation of his match at Extreme Rules. If he lost, Ted would enter the WWE title match at Extreme Rules.

When Raw began, Shane met up with Sheamus, who told Shane he would escort him to the ring. Sheamus came out with Shane as planned, which weltered Ted's spirit. Sheamus tended to this by leaving to be fair. The match started soon after. Ted tried to get Shane down, but failed at each attempt. Eventually Shane started toying with him. After a while of taunting, Shane decided to finish the match. He wrapped his left arm around Ted's head. He squealed like a Hummingbird and just as he was about to hit the Hummingbird in, Cody's music came on. Cody walked in. Shane pushed Ted down and confronted Cody. While Cody was screaming at Shane, John Morrison came running down the ramp and knocked Cody down. Shane turned around and was hit with a Dream Street by Ted Dibiase. Ted pinned him to win. The referee announced that Ted had won and became the Number 1 contender for the WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. Sheamus' music came on and he entered. He showed the championship to Ted. He screamed in his ear that he won't defeat him and then left. Shane left the ring quickly after, feeling shameful that he lost.

Smackdown was regular. It's best match was Cody Rhodes VS John Morrison. The match ended when The Big Show interfered and hit a WMD on both Cody & John. To this, John Laurinitis came out and announced a Fatal-4-Way Hell In A Cell Match at Extreme Rules for the World Heavyweight Championship. He said that the participants would be Shane, The Big Show, Cody Rhodes & John Morrison. He said that there will be no rematch clause and that it should make the people enjoy watching his shows more.

The next few weeks went by in a blur. Ted Dibiase miraculously picked up victories over MVP and Kenny Dykstra. Shane had only 1 match on the Sunday before Extreme Rules against Sheamus, his friend. That match ended in Shane's victory by Ted's interference. Sheamus competed against Shane and faced off against Mark Henry in a match on Raw. John Morrison & Cody Rhodes teamed up to take on Randy Orton & Kofi Kingston but lost after Kofi hit a Trouble In Paradise on Cody Rhodes.

Extreme Rules was vastly popular in terms of sales figures, and they hadn't even, to this point, shown the pay per view. The match card was set, and the matches were:

United States Championship: Santino Marella VS Dolph Ziggler

Diva's Championship: Layla VS Michelle McCool

WWE Tag Team Championships: Kofi Kingston & Randy Orton VS Christian & Edge

Intercontinental Championship: MVP VS Kenny Dykstra VS Goldust VS Finlay VS R-Truth VS Mr. Kennedy

Number 1 Contender for WWE Title Match: Abyss VS Jeff Hardy VS CM Punk

WWE Championship: Sheamus VS Ted Dibiase

World Heavyweight Championship: Shane VS The Big Show VS Cody Rhodes VS John Morrison.

The match stipulations were as following:

United States Championship-Last Man Standing

Diva's Championship-15 Minute Submission Match

WWE Tag Team Championships-Steel Cage Tornado Tag Team

Intercontinental Championship-6 Man Battle Royal.

No. 1 Contender Match-2 Pinfall Match

WWE Championship-First Blood

World Heavyweight Championship-Fatal 4-Way Hell In A Cell Match.

Over that weekend exclusive interviews with all 4 participants in the Hell In A Cell match were put up on wwe.com and afterwards there was an official poll that asked the WWE Universe who they thought would win the World Heavyweight Championship match. At 56% the universe said that The Big Show would win the title. A further 21% said that Cody Rhodes would win. 13% said that Shane would retain & the remaining 10% said that John Morrison would win. This sparked anger in Shane's eyes.
