A short story I wrote based on the song 'The Sporting Life' by the Decemberists. A wealthy young man in the 1950's hopes to do well in an important baseball game and win a scholarship as well as the respect of his father, while dealing with his confused sexuality. I chose to write a short story based around the song because I wanted to focus on my writing style without having to worry about the plot.

A baseball game is played with 2 competing teams, each having 9 players in the field. The batting (hitting) team plays offense while the fielding (pitching) team goes on defense. They take turns in batting — with the visiting team normally the first — and when each team has had their chance to play offense, it is what we call an inning. One game usually consists of 9 innings but can have extra if there is the score is draw by the end of the ninth one.

Any runners on base could try to advance on the next base on batted balls or while the pitcher is in the process of pitching the ball (a rare occurrence called stolen base). The goal of the runner is to reach the fourth base or the home plate (thereby passing all the bases) in order to score a 'run'. After 9 innings, the team with the most number of runs wins. In the event of a draw, extra innings will be added.
