An essay I wrote a few years back for school on the book Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko, particularly dealing in the identity of the 'destroyers'.
Rumor mongering has great effects that cannot just be set aside. It can be so negative that it destroys a whole reputation in one single knock, without facts having been proven. It is an office for those who can be either envious, suspicious or simply idling around.
