    <title>Deacon's Winter</title>

    <id>http://www.booksie.com/thrillers/book/roger_burgraff/deacons-winter</id>
    <updated>2013-06-18T09:29:23 PM-01:00</updated>
    <category term="thrillers/book"/>
<summary>Because of the life he’s lived—the streets of Chicago, the Army as an MP, and all at a young age—Deacon Adellius is dedicated to righting wrongs wherever he finds them. When he discovers a woman beaten and half-frozen in Chicago’s Saint Sebastian Catholic Church, he can’t help himself. He’s got to involve himself in her life. Four thugs—one of them a man with a cane—appear suddenly in his apartment, where he’s taken the woman to protect her, and shoot both of them. Deacon wakes with a terrible headache, a bullet wound burning in his shoulder, and the woman is gone.
Deacon’s dark and deadly winter has just begun. That same night, the woman—a prostitute named Amber—is found dead in the Chicago River and a detective links her to Deacon because she’s wearing his San Sebastian sweatshirt. She’s left behind a small Bible with a key and a code in Deacon’s apartment adjoining the church.

Tormented by his inability to save the woman, Deacon vows to bring her killer to justice. He pockets the key and asks his friend Sister Mary Margaret Sullivan to decipher the code in Amber’s Bible, which could contain incriminating evidence.

Deacon is a church deacon, but he has the size—six foot four inches, 235 pounds—and the chops—two years as an Army MP—to back his vow. He carries an aluminum youth baseball bat for protection and intimidation. Bat is useful when carrying out orders for the Gabrians, a secret organization that forcibly redirects the lives of pedophiles and sexual predators in the church. Deacon was recruited for the Gabrians after he beat up two clergymen he found sexually abusing young girls.

Despite a wild adolescence, Deacon has always felt a pull from the church. Now he’s disillusioned and unsure whether to pursue the priesthood. His confusion grows when he falls for Ann Drew, Amber’s sister, and is torn between the celibacy of a deacon and his desires as a man.

Too late, Deacon realizes that he—and his friends—are now targets of Malachi, the sadistic man with a cane hired to secure the code and a DVD Amber has hidden. Malachi holds Sister Mary Margaret hostage in exchange for the Bible codebook and tortures her before Deacon can comply. The next victim is Glitter, a friendly streetwalker who gives Deacon info on Amber. Once Malachi sees Deacon’s regard for Ann, he threatens her as well.

But Malachi is only a contract worker. Two politicians are behind the mayhem. If Amber’s intel goes public, Police Commissioner Halloran and State Senator Clayton will be in jail instead of public office. Amber intended blackmail for their sexual exploits, but her hidden camera recorded a deadlier incident.

Everybody—the police, the bad guys and the clergy—wants the code and the DVD. And clergy superiors are giving Deacon conflicting orders. Detective Ditmar torments Deacon with accusations and snide information, telling him that Ann Drew was once a prostitute. Deacon is dismayed, but he recounts his own youthful mistakes that led to a choice of jail or the military.

Malachi grows impatient and his threats grow broader. An explosion shatters a stained glass window in the church, a clear message that he will not hesitate to blow up schools, churches and children to get the DVD.

Bodies pile up, as happens in Chicago, when politics are involved. A technician who decodes Amber’s Bible is killed by Malachi, on the police commissioner’s orders. A thug falls to his death when he and his cohort try to kill Deacon and kidnap Ann.

Despite the danger, Deacon’s friends hold fast. Ann is determined to help find the DVD and her sister’s killer. Her estranged father, William De La Croix, bankrolls their search and Brother Chuck hides them at his retreat center. Leo, a small-time crook and buddy from the old days, wants in on the action—especially if he can bring his gun.

Deacon and Ann find the DVD, which shows Halloran discussing an assassination plot, Clayton accidentally killing the prostitute Tamara and both men planning the cover-up. Deacon and Ann track down Tiko, a prostitute that was with Tamara the night she was killed. Unbeknownst to anyone but Malachi, a faint image of Tiko appears on the DVD, making her a witness.

Deacon and Ann confide only in trusted allies, but one of them—the monsignor—is a Halloran informant. The two men have the same goal: to eliminate Cardinal Schneider, Halloran because of the cardinal’s public outrage at his political corruption, Salvatore because the cardinal undermines the Gabrians. The monsignor’s anonymous tip leads to the theft of the DVD and torture of Brother Chuck, a priest and secretary.

Deacon’s guilt mounts and he begins to doubt his ability to solve the case. He’s made mistakes and trusted the wrong people. When he tells a newspaper reporter and the district attorney his findings, they are interested, but Deacon no longer has proof. Halloran and Malachi have all copies of the code and the DVD.

Though the district attorney wants Deacon to abandon the case, he calls him to identify the body of a murdered man and interpret a possible clue. The victim is Bernie, Malachi’s right-hand man, but Deacon can’t decipher the symbol the dying man drew in the snow with his own blood

Upon reviewing the DVD, Halloran plots to get rid of Tiko and Deacon at the same time. Deacon suspects a trap and enlists Leo to back him up when he meets Tiko. By the time they arrive, Tiko and her bodyguard are dead and the police arrest Deacon and Leo.

Deacon is freed on bail, but Leo has disappeared. Deacon is determined to find his friend and solve the case, despite the district attorney’s warning to stay away. With the help of Bat, a tape recorder and Ditmar’s own gun, Deacon traps the detective into confessing his part in the corruption.

Deacon’s winter grows darker when he finds Leo badly beaten and, later, when Ann breaks off their intimate relationship. Deacon is devastated. His friends have suffered; Ann has rejected him; and Malachi is still at large.

Praying for guidance, Deacon focuses on bringing the killers to justice and protecting the cardinal. He has no proof, but he fears the cardinal could be the target of Halloran’s assassination plot.

At Sunday’s High Mass, as the cardinal enters the cathedral with his ornate crosier, Deacon is struck by the similarity to the bloody image Bernie drew in the snow. The crosier was a clue and a warning. The assassination attempt is complicated—an incense container has been laced with potassium cyanide, the cardinal suffers a coughing fit and is rushed to an ambulance called by the monsignor. Deacon correctly guesses the cardinal is to be killed at the hospital and re-routes the ambulance. The district attorney sends officers to the other hospital, where the assassin El Hacha is arrested.

By this time the district attorney has Ditmar’s tape, which leads to confessions from Halloran and Clayton as well. The plan is to catch Malachi when the payoff is made for the assassination. To trap Malachi, Deacon puts word out that the cardinal is not expected to live. Malachi evades capture and kidnaps Ann, who reveals the cardinal’s condition is a hoax, Malachi ties her to his bed and sets out to kill the cardinal himself. Turned back by a driving snowstorm, he returns to Ann.
In the meantime Ann has partially freed herself, but her cell phone dies before she can give her location. Deacon finds her minutes before Malachi arrives. They fight, and Malachi is left blinded and neurologically damaged.
Deacon can feel, cheesy though it may be, a promise of spring—the sun, healing and hope—as he lies recuperating in the hospital. He’s surrounded by the people who matter to him, and he’s wondering, of course, what God in His eternal wisdom and Chicago, itself, in its dark heart have in store for him.
