Rampart

Page 1, Review for the movie Rampart

Oren Moverman’s Rampart is a modern thriller that breaks up the traditional genre of the thriller and re-invents it in a blazingly powerful modern noir film that is as challenging as it is brilliant.

Woody Harrelson is the cop who plays by his own rules. These involve him almost beating a man to death, passing racist remarks to a black cop who is trying to gather evidence against him and sleeping with a different woman almost every night. There is plenty more where that all came from so if your prudish or faint hearted give this one a pass.

The film is essentially about what happens when all the bad things a man has done finally catches up with him. There is not a drop of redemption in this; instead we have a downward spiral into morale decay and hopelessness that is harrowing and often devastating.

Moverman’s erratically superb direction of the film and Harrelson’s astounding performance resonate excellently. This is not an easy film to watch but films simply do not get more powerful than this.
