The Law of Unity. Right. The Law of Unity: an effort to unite all people into one country. It doesn’t seem like a bad goal. To make a country, completely at peace, with enormous diversity, all working together to make the best world possible? Sounds fine to me. Too bad it doesn’t work in the real world like it does on paper, sort of like Communism.22
Do not get me wrong; I am not opposed to this law. I am, however, opposed to its implementation. When millions upon millions of soldiers come to invade and occupy your country I would presume a little bit of a defensive attitude on the behalf of the original inhabitants. 33
I guess I should come out and tell you part of the story. The beginning, at least. 44
I live in the year 2187. The United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and Germany have all survived a global shift in society and government. Violent revolutions had swept across the world years before, uprooting democracy and instead placing Communism in its place. The few Communists in Russia had organized new followers in Communism. Their goal was to spread Communism across the world. The idea took hold in all of the second and third-world countries whose economies were poor. Communism seemed a great alternative to the oppression and lives full of nothing ahead of them. Redistribution of wealth and the institution of Communism as the new government was first called and rallied for, in countries like India, Vietnam, and Haiti. When those and others’ governments and establishments refused the concept of Communism as the regime, rallying quickly turned to violent, rapid revolution.55
The Revolution of Mexico. Over the years, the non-mestizos, the Mexicans that did not have mixed bloodlines of Spanish and Native American, had gained high positions in Mexico’s democracy. Tensions between mestizos and non-mestizos increased through little rebellions against the government, until a full-blown revolution swept through the country. Constant guerrilla attacks on the soldiers eventually forced them to barricade Mexico City, while the mestizos took control of all other cities and towns. The mestizos organized themselves into the New Republic of Mexico. Pooling their resources and making their capital city Oaxaca, raised an army of 20 million and laid siege on Mexico City. After a grueling two years, Mexico City capitulated, the non-mestizos “purged”, and the New Republic of Mexico was official.66
This air of revolution spread quickly to the United States and the rest of Latin America. The United States government appeased the protestors of the fairest government in the world for whatever reason. The protestors, calling themselves the United Peoples against Democracy, was granted Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington for their own country, Gorvenia. Gorvenia, named after the UPD’s effective king, Robert Gorven, immediately armed itself. Gorvenia was made up mostly of refugees from the Mexican revolution, but had some far-left liberals along with them. Somehow, Gorvenia raised a standing army of 5 million, and prepared to advance into western Montana and northern California, seeking to expand their borders. Their advance was driven back.77
The U.S. then remained relatively stable, but always on alert for offensives by Gorvenia.88
The scent of revolution overturned all countries except the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and Germany. New countries sprung up and began to develop around the world. Wars were a constant stream, never ending to secure and expand national borders. 99
Basically, for twenty years, Earth was a hellhole. 1010
Eventually stability came about, and many now think that the world’s land and resources are more evenly distributed. But the United States and the other countries that were scathed but survived have now passed an international agreement among themselves to occupy and dominate all other countries, in order to form one unified nation of all peoples. Never gonna happen, right?1111
But they’re trying to. With modern technology, they’ve taken plenty of fledgling countries already. My country, Torang, is next on the U.S.’s list. This is where my story really begins.1212
*1313
I woke up, my head still fuzzy with sleep. Somewhere, an owl hooted. I turned my head, looked at my clock, saw it was 3:40, and laid back down. I rolled over on my stomach, sighing and wondering why I had woken up in the first place.1414
That’s when my world sank into the depths of hell. 1515
One GX soldier burst into my room. The doorknob clattered onto the floor and rolled away. I shot up, trying to stare them down, even though I couldn’t see their eyes. “What the hell do you want?” I yelled at them, trying to make it seem like I was in the bathroom and my mom had just walked in on me or something. 1616
It silently came over to my bed, a pistol in one hand, and reaching for me with the other. “Cooperate and you shall not be harmed,” the soldier reaching for me said in a monotone voice. Why did the governments do this?1717
I punched the GX square in the chest but it didn’t even flinch. The GX grabbed my shoulders, twisted them back, and literally yanked me out of my bed. “You are not cooperating,” it said matter-of-factly.1818
It dragged me out of my room and down the hallway. I saw another pulling my brother, Ray, out from his room. He kicked and fought, but the soldier retained his grip easily. 1919
My parents were already in the collection truck, and they smiled grimly at us as we were pushed inside. “What the fu—” I started, but my dad stopped me.2020
“We’re sorry, Nathan. And Ray. We’re so sorry.” Tears were drizzling down my dad’s cheeks; that really struck me, he never cried once in my life, except when Ray and I were born. 2121
He touched my arm, and my mom did too. “We’re sorry,” they chorused over and over. Finally, I slipped their hands off my arm and asked the begging question, “What just happened?” 2222
They both sighed, looking down at their hands as if they were some new body part. “We crossed the—no, I crossed the line,” my dad said, shaking his head slowly. He was a known revolutionary in Torang, which was just west of the U.S. on a moderately sized island. His most famous article, “The Thesis of the Law of Unity’s Downfall,” was regarded as the best revolutionary literary work of the decade. I’d say yeah, he’d crossed the line a huge number of times.2323
“So why are they coming after us?” asked Ray, a little bit nae.2424
“Because you’re my family. You’re whom I care about. They want to stop my writings with no questions asked. So they target my family. Works every time, in all of history.” My dad looked grim, eyes downcast and head drooping below his shoulders. “I really screwed up this time.”2525
I should have felt sorry, even though I don’t know why, but I was mad to say it nicely. “Then make up for your mistakes! Turn yourself in! If you don’t care about us, why should we care about you?” I demanded.2626
“Nathan, don’t say th—” my mom started, but I cut her off, “I’ll say whatever the hell I want to. Don’t call me Nathan. You don’t deserve to. While Dad was off writing stuff that will for sure get us killed, you just let him. You’re just as much to blame for this as he is.”2727
“But—son—Nate—we were doing what was best for the people,” stammered my dad, wiping his forehead, full of sweat.2828
“Yeah, maybe it’ll help the people. Since you’re doing that, you won’t miss your family, will you?” I stood up, grabbed Ray’s arm, pulled him to the back of the still stationary Collection truck, and through some feat of inexplicable strength, broke the right door open with a kick to its gleaming hinges and jumped down. The three GX soldiers were in the front of the truck, but heard the door slam open and came to investigate, shotguns armed.2929
I had to decide whether to just run for it or hide somewhere. Running for it the other way could work, but has huge risks like being shot in the back and paralyzed. These boys weren’t shooting be be guns. They were packing .50 caliber shotgun shells that would hurt like something I won’t say.3030
“What are we doing, Nate?” Ray whispered at me as we crouched behind the right back wheel. I got an idea. I bent up on my knees, saw my parents grieving and crying, and slowly closed the door on them, locking it again. I then hid back behind the wheel again, holding my breath as the GX’s came around the corner. 3131
They saw the door was closed, but still inspected it, looking particularly at the dent in the middle hinge that my aching foot had caused. Cautiously opening the door, they peeked inside the truck, not noticing me and Ray were gone because they only looked at our parents. How lucky was that?3232
Ray’s foot slipped out from behind the wheel suddenly. My heart stopped beating as he slowly slid it back. One of the GX’s looked over just as the tip of the sneaker disappeared from his field of view. I heard menacing footsteps as the GX came closer. He bent down, prodded the tire, stood up, and turned around. He didn’t notice us. These guys were not programmed very well, I guess. Some of them are, some aren’t. 3333
Then, things got worse.3434
Another GX came around the front of the truck, staring at the tire, and looked straight at us. He slowly pulled his pistol from his hip holster. He loaded the pistol and set its laser sight in the middle of my forehead. A few steps forward he took. These GX’s must have been on the lower end of the spectrum. But why send this badly programmed squadron to capture the leading revolutionary against their leaders?3535
I got my answer.3636
They weren’t so dim-witted after all. As the GX was distracting me with a laser practically burning a hole in my head, two others had set up behind the wheel, sights at the base of our necks. Oh crap, I thought as they tightened the trigger.3737
*3838
Nathan Andrews, Sr., faced a terrifying problem. Either go to execution quietly and let my two sons be killed, or try and save them but risk all of their lives anyways. I'm a complicated guy and a genius if I do say so myself. I've sparked rebellions against the Law of Unity countries over two hundred times. I've spoken passionately against the horrors of the LOUs. I've been targeted before, by snipers, GX’s, even a man pretending to be a new intern in my company FreeDom who was really an assassin employed by one of the LOU’s. I've nearly lost his life many times over.3939
But this is the first time I've been scared of that.4040
Maybe because this was the first time my family was directly involved. But that just doesn't seem right to me. I realized what I was so scared of.4141
I was scared of the GX’s.4242
Not exactly surprising, though; everyone was afraid of them. Even the people in the LOU countries were scared. I frowned, thinking. That still wasn’t exactly why, the particular reason for my dread of the GX’s. 4343
Finally, I figured it out.4444
I’m afraid of them. I was afraid of the GX’s imposing presence, their suggested dominance over everyone they met. I was afraid of what they stood for, oppression, dominance, insensitivity, and a false hope of mending a world that was better than the old one. I scared of their symbolism, the fact that this terrible idea could even be conceived in a person’s mind. The old world had been striving for this goal, for this mark of worldwide peace and unity. But it could never be achieved. The problems were too great, the implications too terrible, the process to get to their goal too unthinkable. I had to do something about it. Nobody else would.4545
So I did something about it.4646
*4747
“Come on, honey,” I said to Alice, my wife. “We need to help them.”4848
“What are we gonna do?” she asked, visibly nervous. “We can’t stop them, can we?”4949
I slowly pushed the door open. My heart leapt into my throat as I saw Nate and Ray cornered between three GX’s laser sights. Alice gave a little cry of protest but I motioned for silence. One GX heard the small cry and turned around halfway, but then refocused his attention on Nate and Ray. 5050
“All right hon, we have to distract them. I’ll slam the door open and jump out. If you can run around the other corner, away from the boys, they might chase after you. Are you ready, Alice?”5151
She nodded, swallowing through a large knot in her throat. "I-I just want to say something."5252
“What?”5353
"I know you've made mistakes. I know that you've put our family in danger. But I still trust you. I'm not sure if we'll all get out of this alive. But there's one thing I want to say: I don't want my sons to die for something they didn't do." She came close to me and held my hand, looking somber. I smiled briefly, clutched her hand, and nodded.5454
"Thanks."5555
Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open vigorously. It swung on its greased hinges and hit a GX in the back of the head. A loud smack was heard as the soldier’s metal helmet took the brunt of the blow. He wouldn’t be unconscious, I thought. And it was true: the GX was holding the back of its helmet, a little bit dazed but nowhere near incapacitated.5656
Its partner instantly spun around, snapped its shotgun out of the holster on its back and found me. A round was fired: the blast echoed through the neighborhood. No neighbors would care, though. It was just another standard raid.5757
I staggered back, having been shot in the left shoulder. Pain coursed through my entire body until I almost cried out for mercy but then my body turned numb. Blood rushed down my shirt, soaking it shockingly scarlet. I tumbled forward, and everything went black.5858
* 5959
I saw my dad, out of the corner of my eye, sink down to the ground and know he'd been shot. Probably fatally. I closed my eyes and gritted my teeth, awaiting my own shot in the shoulder or someplace worse. My dad had sort of knocked out one of the GX's, but the other two were still fine. That's when I saw my mom jump out of the truck, bent down quickly to see my dad, then immediately straighten up. Tears were running down her cheeks and she had a determined look on her face. In a feat of dexterity, she swept the GX’s legs out from under it. It crashed to the pavement satisfyingly. My mom smiled; she’d once been a star gymnastic in high school. 6060
But me and Ray were still in danger. The other soldier hadn’t moved, only glancing up alertly. She stepped around the edge of the steel truck, saw the GX, and ducked down. The soldier had seen her. My mom dashed back around the opposite corner, and a shotgun blast barely missed her ankle. 6161
The other dazed soldiers were regaining their balance and function now. Realizing our window of opportunity, I said to Ray, "Let's go."6262
"Where?"6363
"Hanbury." Hanbury was the nearest town. 6464
"All right." We both ran, sprinting as fast as possible down the sidewalk. The other GX's were preoccupied with my mom. I knew this might be the last I'd see of her alive. I knew she'd either be shot or captured. And I started crying. Both our parents would be dead sooner or later. Ray was crying too. He understood that fact too.6565
I heard a loud shot from directly behind us. 6666
Somewhere, an owl hooted. 6767
