“Scream 4”, the fourth installment of the “Scream” series of “slasher” films recently premiered, after a 10 year hiatus. The horror movie giant is known for the “ghostface” killer, a costume that all of the films killers wear while murdering their victims.
“Scream 4”, which is the first “Scream” film in ten years, is set in the original fictional town of Woodsboro, with lead character Sidney Prescott (played my Neve Campbell) returning after 10 years to promote her book.
Subsequently enough, it just happens to the 10th anniversary of the original Woodsboro murders, which left Prescott as the sole survivor, along with Deputy Dewey Riley and, his wife, reporter-turned-author Gale Weathers (David Arquette and Courteney Cox).
On this 10th anniversary, someone is re-creating the killings just as they were 10 years ago, starting with two high school girls in their home.
Main character Jill Roberts (played by Emma Roberts), who is the cousin to Prescott, and her friends find themselves as the newest victims. After killing Robert’s friend in her room, the killer informs Prescott she too will be killed this time, and no longer be the sole survivor. Two police deputies are slain as well, while watching guard over the Robert’s household.
Weathers, who is trying to solve the mystery once again, gets badly wounded by the killer.
The film climaxes at the house of Roberts’ friend Kirby Reed (played by Hayden Panettiere). With all of her friends slain, Roberts reveals herself to Prescott as the killer, saying she is sick of living in Prescott’s shadow.Roberts stabs Prescott, to what she thinks is death, then intentionally wounds herself to make it look like she was brutalized, yet survived.
While in the hospital, Roberts finds out Prescott is still alive and sets out to end her once and for all. With help form Riley and Weathers, Prescott kills Roberts, ending her hopes and dreams of being the “new sole survivor”.
The acting in the film was good. With Campbell, Arquette and Cox reprising their original roles it gave audiences a real thrill seeing them together again.
I would have liked to have seen one of them turn out to be the new “ghostface” but, it was just as nice seeing them solve the crime and thwart the killer once again.
In the film, characters discuss the new “rules” for horror films, which was nice to see the rules being explained as they are actually happening.
“Scream 4” is said to be the start of a new “Scream” trilogy. Hopefully, this trilogy is as good as the first.
