The world is one messed up place; there are no two ways around it. It is the best possible way to describe this cruel, cruel world that we live in. It is, for lack of better terms, a giant cluster…well, you know.
However, we are actually all interconnected. Whether you like it or not, we are all interconnected. One shining example of this exists on the end of South Lane Street. This end of South Lane Street resides in the dump that is Dundalk, Maryland. In 1 South Lane Street lives an award-winning author and his model wife. They have an awkward relationship in which the couple spends little time at all communicating with each other. Next door to the couple, living in 3 South Lane Street, is a 23 year old single woman. This is her first year away from her very close Italian family. She is very attractive but not much is known about her, as she tends to stay secluded from the rest of the community. Next to her, in 5 South Lane Street, is a 43 year old single mother of three. The poor lady struggles to make ends meet. She has been living paycheck to paycheck since she has exited the womb. She has been beaten into the ground in her attempts to make a solid living for her children and herself. Meanwhile, next door in 7 South Lane Street, lives a lowlife drug dealer. He is swimming in a sea of green. He owns two BMWs and a motorcycle that were paid for strictly by the addictions of the weak minded. Next door to this man, living in 9 South Lane Street, is a young college student. The young student has worked 40 hours a week throughout his schooling. He has saved every bit of his tip money just to pay for the portion of his tuition that his financial aid refuses to cover. His grades suffer as a result of the fact that when he isn't in school, he is working. In the rare instances that he isn't working or at school, he is most likely sleeping. Outside of his house, a man roams around begging for change. He was fired from his last job three years ago for stealing from the register when the store closed at night. Since then, he has begged for money. He has not tried to get a job because there are stupid people in the world who will give him their hard-earned money so he can buy drugs from the scumbag down the street. Next, living in the next to last house on the block (11 South Lane Street), is a gorgeous 32 year old female. She has two different sides to her personality though; two very different sides indeed. Finally, living in the last house on the block (13 South Lane Street) is a young 27 year old white male. The block consists of twelve individuals; twelve very different individuals. These twelve individuals would seemingly have nothing in common, yet they are all interconnected in the web of the world.
The web extends far beyond the reach of this particular block of South Lane Street. This is just a tiny segment, a microcosm, of the web. Realized or not, everyone has an effect on the web. Ideally, the web would be used to benefit all. An individual's actions could be used for the benefit of the world. Great inventions such as the internet, the automobile, the phone, etc have all been spread around the world as a result of the web. However, more often than not, most individuals miss their opportunity to positively affect the web. In fact, most people negatively affect the web. People are, in general, selfish. There is not a single act or behavior performed by an individual that could not be viewed as a selfish act in some regard. Why does an individual go to work at their job at the local liquor store? Does the individual go to work to provide a service to those that would like to buy alcohol? No. The individual goes to work at the local liquor store because they want to get paid and they want the discount they receive on select drinks. These are technically selfish acts, as they are acts performed solely for the benefit of the individual performing them. Here's another example. Laurie goes to a local homeless shelter to help serve dinner. Why does she do this? She does this because it makes her feel better about herself. This is an act of selfishness. The web is designed to withstand the negative effects that people cause. There is only so much the web can take before it collapses upon itself. When this happens, the Spider has no other option but to rebuild its web. This is when the true horror begins.
