The Black Factor

The shadows, darkness. They creep across the whole world, obscuring reality and hiding truths. And they provide a home for those who must avoid the light, avoid the truth, for they are the creatures of the darkness as we are the creatures of the light. They feed on us, put myths in our heads, blind our eyes and terrify us, not because of what they are, but of the many things that the darkness hides about them. They live in fear of us as we live in fear of them, not daring to show their faces or make contact except to those who truly believe in them. These sightings are rare, and often end in disaster, as these entities are never meant to meet. There is also the risk of attack from these entities, resulting in mysterious and violent killings. Despite these dangers, there are still some so interested in these creatures that they go looking for them, and in some cases, act as protectors to those who suffer at the hands of them.

These people are part of an organization called, "The Black Factor." In it are Gwyneth Pierce, a slender, pretty, blonde haired brown eyed twenty-one year old, the leader and founder. She created the group because her family had been attacked by a Hydronicus, an amphibious creature that lives in lakes and sewers. John Jones, a tall, strongly built black haired twenty-three year old, one of Gwen's only friends and a former street gang member. He had also had experiences with the creatures from the other side. These two were the main force behind the organization, plus some of their friends, who sometimes assisted them with their investigations. The organization had been active for three years now, but had never encountered anything like this beforeā€¦

Chapter 1

What's hiding in the Dark?

"Here's the address." John said as he and Gwen crept slowly down and avenue in a somewhat battered BMW M3 that they had rented in New Orleans, where they had flown to from their headquarters in Phoenix. They had received an urgent call from a hysterical old woman who said that there was some kind of creature that kept staring in her bedroom window at her. John and Gwen headed down as soon as they possibly could, they knew that things like this could never be set aside for later, they needed immediate action.

Gwen hit the brakes and they glided to a halt in front of a quaint house at the very end of the cul-de-sac backed by a forest.

"Charming little place." John said, releasing his seatbelt and climbing out of the car. "Wonder what could be upsetting the lady?"

"Don't know, but judging by the five times she's called us in the past two days, it's definitely gotta be something serious." Gwen said, doing the same and slipping a Glock into her hip holster and tossing John his Magnum that he had left on his seat.

"Thanks." He said, giving it a little twirl and slipping it under his belt. "Or, it could just be some crazy old cat lady who's getting monsters confused with peeping toms."

"Better safe than sorry, and I'm sure that the terrified person who lives here must agree." Gwen said, walking toward the house with John in tow.

"I suppose you're right, but what could we be facing? The area's to rural for a real threat."

"There are some very dangerous creatures that will enter a residential area if there's enough fear, and this lady's got enough for a small island."

"True, true." James said. By now they were at the doorstep, and they were about to knock, when they heard a horrible scream coming from the back of the house.

"Crikey!" John said, whipping out his Magnum. "Sounds like we got here just in time for a face-to-face with this thing!"

"Yeah, let's just hope we can get it before it gets her!" Gwyneth shouted, "You go around back, and I'll get this door down and make sure that little old lady's safe!"

"Right!" John said, darting off and vaulting over the gate that led to the backyard while Gwen aimed a hard kick at the door, which sprung open instantly. She ran inside and looked around for the bedroom, able to find it quickly due to the screams. She burst into the room just in time to see John standing at the window, his gun aimed at something retreating into the forest with amazing speed. Gwen rushed over to the window, threw it open, and shouted,

"John! Don't you shoot it!" John obeyed and pulled the trigger while easing the hammer down. He climbed in through the window after he put the safety on and joined Gwen by the side of the lady, who was still in bed, crying and shaking with her hands over her eyes. She was a short, slight colored woman in her late sixties, with mildly curly snow white hair and a kindly, shriveled face.

"Crikey, it's grandma." John said. Gwyneth shot him a look of sharpest daggers and addressed the woman.

"There, there," She said, sitting down on the bed and putting a comforting hand around the woman, who grasped it with a shaking hand and leaning into her, "It's alright, we're here now and we're not going to let anything happen to you." The woman did not respond, but continued crying for about five more minutes before she regained control of herself.

"Thank you so much for coming." She said in a shaky voice. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't showed up just now. This time, it was trying to get in!"

"Don't dwell on it, Mrs. Harper." Gwen said, "We're here now, and we're not leaving till we know what this creature is, and have taken care of it. You won't have a troubled night again after we're gone." Gwen continued to comfort Mrs. Harper while John stood at the window, gun out and ready to scare the creature off if it showed its face again.

"John." Gwen said. He turned his head a little and said,

"What did it look like?"

"Couldn't really get a good look at it, it ran too fast. I do know it was white."

"That narrows things down considerably." Gwen said with a sarcastic edge.

"Oi, I don't think you could've done any better, it was quick as lightning."

"Oh, you know I'm just messing with you. D'you think it'll be back tonight?"

"Probably not, I gave it a pretty good scare I guess, never looked back, just ran."

"Well, at least we shouldn't be bothered anymore."

"What about Mrs. Harper?"

"I'll get her some warm milk and sleeping pills, those'll make her completely oblivious to the world, and she deserves a night without torment."

"Right, well, you can catch some sleep as well, and I'll keep my eyes open for it."

"Alright, thanks. But wake me in four hours alright? I don't want you staying up all night, you need your rest too." Gwen said, turning to get the old lady's milk and pills. "Night."

"Night. Have a nice sleep."
