Tricks and Scares.

"You know I can't do this anymore. It is too risky and I fear that we will end up bringing something here that we don't want." Listening to Catalina complain, Lena snickered, thinking that her friend was scared. "If you are so afraid of it, then stop doing it. I will find someone else to do this with,"she said, trying hard not to laugh.
Catalina shakes her head and picks up her bag, heading out of the room. Lena sighed, then ran after her, trying to convince her to stay. "Cat, look. It is all harmless fun, ok? We don't do anything bad, so we are fine. And we really do need to get more people to join us. You know we do." Catalina stared at her friend and replied tersely," It isn't that at all and you know it, Lena. We are dabbling in something that we don't totally understand. It is too dangerous to continue."
Lena shook her head in disbelief. "You were the one who told me about it, Cat. And now you want to stop because you are afraid? I can't understand this at all." Cat looked down, trying to calm herself enough to reply to her friend. "I just think that we need to prepare and think about it, Lena. That is all I am saying."
Catalina stared at Lena, trying to understand her friend. "We need more people if you plan to hold a party or something. I will call a few friends and ask them if they want to join us." Lena smiled, content that she got her way yet again. "I will call a few people as well, Cat. Maybe we can have a good group." Catalina grinned sheepishly and took her cell phone out of her bag. Lena took hers out as well and they headed into different rooms to make their calls.
They both walked back into the living room and grinned at each other. Their friends would be meeting them here at midnight tonight to play with the Ouija board Lena brought. They decide to pass the time by doing a little magic. "Make sure it is one that can do no harm, Lena," Catalina said, narrowing her eyes. "We don't want to bring something evil to the party tonight."
Lena rolled her eyes and placed candles in a circle on the floor. She grabbed a small container out of her bag and purified the circle her and Catalina were standing in. They closed their eyes and concentrated on the spell before them, feeling a slight breeze pick up and blow their hair into their faces. The girls opened their eyes and saw a shadowed figure beckoning to them from outside of the circle.
Catalina stood right where she was, frozen with shock and surprise. "We unleashed something, Lena," she said, looking at her friend. "I knew this was gonna happen! I warned you and you didn't listen to me." Lena laughed and stepped out of the circle, walking up to the shadowed figure and kissing him. He removed his hood and laughed as Catalina shrieked with fear, then with anger. Lena wrapped her arms around his waist and turned towards her friend, trying to hold her laughter in. "You worry so much, I figured it was time to have some fun, Cat. Say hi to my close friend, Nero. He and I planned this little tryst so we can scare the hell out of you."
Without warning, Catalina jumped out and slapped Lena across the side of her face so hard, she fell to the floor. Her eyes blazing with white hot fire, Catalina grabbed her purse and jacket and headed to the door. "To hell with you both. I am through with your bullshit jokes, Lena. I am out of here," Catalina said through her teeth. She opened the door and walked out, slamming it loudly behind her. Lena looked at Nero in utter shock as he helped her up. "It was just a little joke! Why is she taking it so seriously?" she asked him. He shook his head and replied," It was kind of mean to do that to her. Maybe you should go after her, Lena. Talk to her and try to calm her down." Lena nodded and headed after Catalina, catching her just before she got into her car. Catalina turned around fast, glaring at her friend. "Go back inside and get away from me, now. I don't want to talk to you and I don't want to see you," she said angrily, hurt and embarrassment showing in her expression.
"I am sorry for what I did, Cat. It was childish and immature and I am regretting it now. Please don't leave me. We are best friends." Catalina shakes her head, tears brimming in the corners of her eyes. "We are through being friends, Lena. Friends don't play such cruel jokes on each other. Especially when they know how strong the friend's beliefs are to them."
She got into her car and drove off, leaving Lena standing there in emotional turmoil. Lena headed back inside and found solace in Nero's arms. He held her close, running his fingers through her hair. " I take it that she didn't want to talk to you?" he asks, staring into her emerald green eyes. She shook her copper colored hair and replied," No, she didn't. She told me basically to go to hell and not talk to her ever again."
He held onto her and they sat down, silence falling all around them. They stayed that way until they heard laughter coming from beyond the front door. Lena looked at her watch and saw that it was exactly midnight. Her friends and Catalina's friends walked into the room and smiled. They gathered around her and Nero, talking animatedly and waiting impatiently for the festivities to begin. Seven of them headed to a table with the Ouija board and the remaining five sat down with Nero and Lena.
They sat and used the board to communicate with spirits that haunted the house. They found out that there used to be a grand ball held there and the servants started a fire one night. As the guests tried to escape, the servants bolted the doors and windows, locking everyone inside. There were no survivors from the fire. The house was rebuilt a few years later, but the spirits never left, thinking of it as their home still.
Hearing a loud banging noise, everyone jumped and turned towards the front door. It flew open and Catalina walked in, grinning at everyone. They stared at her as she walked gracefully in and sat down in a throne type chair. "Did I scare you? I hope I did. Payback is such a bitch, isn't it Lena?" she said, staring at her. Lena jumped up quickly and walked over to Catalina, anger showing in her eyes. "That wasn't a smart thing to do, Cat. You scared all of us. I think you owe us an apology."
Catalina shook her head and stood up, walking over to the fireplace. "I don't owe you anything, Lena. I never should have bothered with you in the first place. I thought it would be fun for a while, but now it is time for me to go back home." As everyone stared in mute horror, Catalina stepped into the fireplace and stood as the flames surrounded her.
Everyone cried out in shock and horror as they watched her catch on fire and vanish before their eyes. Lena fell to the floor in a heap, fainting from the sight. The house started to quake and crumble all around them and they ran out the door just as it all collapsed into the ground. They turned and saw the stones in a pile, slowly sinking.
You see, Catalina and Lena met at the house over a year ago. Lena thought that Cat was as alive as she was, and they became good friends until Lena tried to scare her. Catalina had died all those years ago when the first house was burned down. Her spirit came back to have some fun and she decided that trying to be a part of the living wasn't working. She had to shed the human form and go back to the other world.
All of the spirits that haunted the house departed when Catalina stepped into the fire. The property remains sealed off by a fence and since it sits on a cliff, it became known as The Fire's End. Every year around Halloween, you can go there and see the spirits dancing in the moonlight, just like they did all those years ago before the servants exacted revenge on their masters. Lena ended up in the mental ward of the hospital and has been there ever since, raving about a fire and her friend vanishing in it.
