Secret Star
If one were to travel
Light-years into the future
Spinning through the night sky
Past the vast planets and burning rock
One might see
A star.
A twinkling star, a shimmering star,
But a secret star.
This is the star that holds the secrets
Of the blooming rose,
With spiky thorns on the outside
And velvety smooth petals within.
Whose thorns scream, "Stay back! Or you'll regret it."
But whose silky petals whisper, "I'm softer than you might think."
This is the star who keeps silent
For the racing rabbit
With powerful hind legs and a fragile body
And a nest of babies back home.
Whose muscled legs carry her in leaping bounds to keep her babies safe
From the bloodthirsty fox stalking her den.
This is the star who whispers to none
Of the deceptive fox
With sly mind and fast feet
And the will to use both.
He just wants to survive, to eat
He'll do what he must for survival.
This is the star who keeps a vigil
Over the flitting, twittering songbird
Soaring above the world below
On a gust of spring-scented air.
Whose delicate melody and colorful feathers
Bring joy to all who hear it.
And this is the star, the secret star,
Whom no one will ever know
As the one who kept watch over all God's creatures
Living on the green earth far below.
