When I first heard the story,I didn't quite understand the severity. I didn't know how bad the devastation actually was. I had no idea what was to come. Media images of shattered buildings, endless debris, lifeless bodies, and crying children. My heart was in pain. I wanted to reach out and help these people. I felt the pain and desperation in their cries. I watched as babies cried in pain and grown men begged for relief. I saw people buried under tons of rubble and debris. I couldn't believe the lack of compassion and respect for death. My tears flowed as I watched great lives perish and diminish into the earth. Scars, bruises, tears, scrapes, cover the bodies of Haitian locals. Children are forced to prematurely say goodbye to their parents forever. They are lost. They are confused. They have no shelter. They survive and exist because of a relentless and undying spirit and will. Despite unthinkable sadness and death, they sing songs of praise and hope. Poverty and misfortune have become second nature for these people. The rumbling of the earth and repeated aftershocks have not killed their spirit. They will overcome, thrive, and with the help of the entire world, they will rebuild.
