I'm Thankful for Poverty

I'm thankful for poverty.

I'm grateful that I learned how to make do with little.

To find the best bargain.

To embrace coupons.

To feel a rush of happiness just when I could go to McDonald's, instead of having the usual Hamburger Helper or Ramen Noodles for dinner.

I'm thankful for poverty.

That I would not judge those who were less well off.

Who wore tattered sneakers and pants that were too short, just like me.

Who cried out in delight when they got a new outfit, or a celebratory ice cream sundae, just like me.

Who knew what it was like to sleep in the cold, without electricity or heating, and be so thankful when the electricity returned.

Just like me.

I'm thankful for poverty.

That I learned to be resourceful.

To use soda can boxes as doll houses.

To use chairs and blankets to make a playhouse.

To go with Dad to find great used furniture and toys along the side of the road, next to garbage cans.

I'm thankful for poverty.

That it gave me more free time, apart from movies, games, the Internet, and electronic gadgets.

That it allowed me to explore the wonders of an inexpensive book, to transport me to every world imaginable.

That I could learn and have fun at the same time.

I'm thankful for poverty.

For understanding.

For learning.

For enrichment.

For admiring the little things in life.

For being more thankful for what I have.

I'm thankful for poverty.
