Dreams That Fall
When things go wrong, what do we have to fall into? When your best isn’t good enough, what do you do? When people beat you down and turn you into a pool of tears, where do you go?
I fall, down and down and down. I don’t know where I am or where the bottom is. I’ve fallen so far that I can’t see the light from the top, not that there ever was.
The sides of this hole are horrible. Visions of my past and present play back like a video. From the shadows they close in on me, swinging their claws and knives hoping to kill me.
I fall faster and faster. A blade cuts through my side, but I don’t scream. Then a knife cuts my chest, but I don’t scream. Instead I close my eyes while the monsters close in. I begin to dream.
I’m in a valley; the place is full of life. The birds are singing and the water flows from the cool stream. At first I thought this was real, but as I reached out to pick a flower it disappeared from the earth. Then I realized I was in a dream. I was still falling but had no knowledge.
Coming to my senses I begin to panic. When will I hit the ground, what will happen? Oh how I wish I could dream it all away. But as I thought those words, I’m suddenly pushed back into reality. I’m in the dark pit known as myself. I hit the ground, the trigger was pulled, I am dead. Will I ever come to life….?
