The American raid was unexpected. We have been on this small island for awhile and we were not expecting a raid, especially from the Americans. From our base in the jungle we were waiting and watching guard over the small atoll of Makin. They came at night in small boats, with quiet motors. They assaulted our radio station and ammo dump. The men in the trucks heard the assault on the station and stopped and waited on the fringes of the jungle watching the raiders set up. When the trucks came back to the base empty, we were confused.
The drivers then told us that the Americans had captured the station and the ninety soldiers in the jungle were watching them and waiting for reinforcements. So we loaded up about seventy men, including me and my sniper partner into the trucks and headed to the fringes where our comrades were waiting. The trucks stopped about thirty yards from the jungle fringes and we moved up to where our men were in wait. The Americans were all in foxholes waiting for us to attack. My sniping partner and I found a spot in some bushes where we would have a good concealed position to shoot from. He started to move forward and pushed the barrel of his rifle through the bushes just a bit. Then BANG! An American sniper fired and killed my partner. At the same time my friend was falling down dead, the rest of the soldiers ran out attacking the Americans. I just stayed shocked; I couldn't believe that my friend had been killed. He had a family back home in Hiroshima, a wife and a young son. I was filled with rage and immediately picked up his sniper rifle and went to work, killing three American soldiers. It looked like we were going to overrun American positions but they blew up the radio tower and then the ammo dump blew up also.
Those explosions killed many men and enraged me further to see Japanese lives taken by these barbarians. As I was scanning the battlefield an American soldier caught my attention. He was firing the American gangster gun but it wasn't the gun he was holding that interested me, it was the gun in his foxhole beside him. It was a Springfield sniper rifle. I thought for sure it was the man that killed my friend. I started to line him up praying that Akio was watching me take revenge for him. Just as I was about to take the shot the ground started to shake! I looked towards the sea and saw a destroyer shelling us! I took cover as the shelling went on non-stop for fifteen minutes. When the shelling stopped I looked out and saw that the Americans had left. Our medics came in and took away the wounded, while we regulars moved the dead to a sacred spot on the island. After our own were taken care of we moved the American dead. I looked for that American sniper among the dead and could not find him. He had escaped! At first I was ready to go on a rampage but I realized that we would meet again and I would get revenge for Akio.
