I smiled as the man handed me my food, turning to observe the small restaurant. The plastic tray felt so weak in my grasp compared to the old metal ones I was so used to eating from, but I guess they wouldn’t have that at McDonald’s would they? Yes, I was a soldier at McDonalds, but I admit it after a few years of eating pita and humus some might want to enjoy the luxury of American fast food. Plus, I had to blend in.

My eyes scanned the empty seats, and after catching sight of the heavy rainfall outside I decided to sit by one of the window seats in the back. I passed a rotund old man with a mop on the way but other than him I saw no other customers, well until I passed the last both and caught sight of a teenager sitting at the far end of a window booth. It drove my curiosity considering it was nearly midnight now, and during a rather rough store, perhaps he was one of our own?

“Excuse me?” That was what caught his attention finally after making my way towards him. “May I sit here?” He only responded with a slight nod, flashing a small smile. Obviously he wasn’t in the best mood, which only made me grow more curious. I had expected him to at least keep eye contact while I was sitting down but as soon as I set my tray against the table top he turned to look back outside.

“So are you going to get anything?”

“Oh, no thank you?” I smiled hearing his voice. It was smooth, soft, it almost had a gentle touch to it. I had suspected him to be my target because of the black overcoat, and the sunglasses, but I decided to interrogate a bit more.

“Do you live around here?” He raised his eyebrows slightly finally turning his head towards me.

“Oh, yes actually, what about you?” I set my coke off of the tray peeling the paper from the straw with my answer. “Oh, no I’m a tourist, I heard the beaches are really nice here.” He nodded in agreement.

“Where are you from?” He seemed more interested in the conversation so I simply played along, unwrapping my hamburger from the warm foil.

“Oh, from overseas” He furrowed his eyebrows at my answer, I near expected his response.

“Overseas? Then wouldn’t it be easier to simply fly to California, perhaps over Japan?” I laughed lightly.

“No, I really wanted to visit the Carolinas and Virginia, maybe even Maine if I have the chance. Something just catches my interest about the thirteen colonies.”

He smiled “Yes, they are very interesting I’ve done several projects on them.” I opened my hamburger and began to peel the lettuce off of it.

“You have? That’s nice, do you go to any schools in this area?” He shook his head.

“No, I studied abroad with an early education.” He then pulled his glove back on his right hand checked a small black watch. “Oh, its past twelve already? I better get back.” He lifted himself up slowly but before he passed me I grabbed for his name.

“Hey, what’s your name by the way?” He looked back down to face me, his voice keeping its soft tone.

“Oh, sorry, it was rude of me to not introduce myself earlier. My name’s Alex, and yours?”

“Emily.” He offered his hand and I wiped my fingers with a napkin before shaking his in response.

“Nice to meet you” He pulled away slowly and as he made his way for the door I responded quite loudly.

“Same to you” I smiled as he made his way to the door and turned around to continue with my late dinner.

“See ya’ later Matt, thanks for the visit.”

“You’re welcome, Alex.”

I couldn’t help but stop when I heard the exchange of words. The same man that gave me my food was the one who said Matt. So, then his own name was Alex. Then that would mean. I whipped my head to the side as the door to the restaurant shut, and I shot up darting for the door before I slammed into it, throwing it wide open. Yet, on the other side there was nothing.

“No…” I breathed clenching my teeth. “That couldn’t have been.” I turned back around before checking into the darkness once more. I must have scared the cashier with the hostile sense in my walk now, and he had the right to be scared. I was angry.

“Hey, who was that boy?” I said in a demanding ring.

“His name’s Matt.” A man responded, the one assumed was Alex.

“Who is he?” I said more casually, I couldn’t start a ruckus.

“He’s a regular customer. He usually brings his friend here with him.”

“Who’s the friend?” He shrugged turning his head back to the unseen part of the restaurant.

“Hey, Luke, who’s that girl that Matt brings here every Tuesday?!” I waited impatiently as another voice responded from the back.

“Oh, you mean the girl with the reddish hair, or the other one?!”

“The auburn hair!”

“Oh her name was Rin, or Ren, oh, no wait, I think it was Rayne!”
