They had been sitting in the cozy suburban living
room for a few hours now, eating snacks, watching TV and doing
things the way they normally did. The young couple had just
gotten enganged, and they rented out a small home together as
soon as they raised enough money after graduation.
The young woman, sitting on their couch, began to
tear after watching an Army commercial. Her tears turned to a
mournful weeps, and she dug her face into her knees. Her fiance
came up to her, holding her tight.
"Desiray, I'm sorry. I have to do this."
She just cried.
"I'm so sorry baby, but I've promised my father every year since
I was four."
Jon hated to see his love like this... So distraught,
so scared. He would do anything for her, but he had to keep his
promise to his father. He had to hold on to his duty. Finally,
she was able to speak.
"But what if you get hurt? What if you don't come back? Your
father would forgive you."
She couldn't do anything about it, she knew. She knew
how hard-headed he was and how much he'd been preparing for this.
He'd been waiting for this moment his whole life. But she kept on
trying her hardest to keep him with her. He took a hold of her
hand and held her close the way he always did.
"Please, please don't think like that. Even though it may seem
like the end of the world, you have to stay positive, and I do,
too. And how could I know that? He may forgive me, but would he
be proud? I'm ninteen now, and my father is gone. It's time for
me to fight in his foot steps."
"Jonathan... You can't do this. Please don't leave me! What
happened to staying here, to making a family?"
At this point she was begging. She kept weeping in his arms,
hoping with all her heart he wouldn't leave for war.
"Listen to me. I will come back. I will see you again. I will be
with you for the rest of my years. You are the love of my life
and I'd do anything to see your face again. I will be back, we
will have a family. I will be okay. I promise."
"But what if-"
"I promise you, Desiray."
