On Edge

Living without a purpose is one thing, but living with pain in your heart is another. Both can cause you grief and both can push you to the edge of the world, but only one of these truths can drive you to madness. Living without a purpose isn't always painful; it only becomes painful when you realize that you really aren't living without one. But living with a constant pain in your heart will always be with you and you will always know it is there with you. It's sad really, from a lost acquaintance to the realization that your youth is gone, pain can come from anywhere. In fact, the most painful one is that of an unfulfilled love -cliché I know- but it's profound.

"Dammit.", he says as he cries

Smoke from a recently lit cigarette wafts throughout the room spewing through the dark, musty crevices of it. The smoke reaches an undone bed, a drawer covered with empty bottles and a desk covered with pens acting almost as if to cover up a person's futile attempts; one that was driven down from his pedestal and forced into a position of solitude by his own hand.

The man waves his hand across the room desolate of light except that of a blue glow in order to dispel the smoke. He breathes, and looks down in solitude at his desk and at the few words he has typed. All sodden reminders of his past and of the truths he chose to ignore. He stays like that for a few minutes and the room stays still except that of the smoke in the room. He gets up and turns off the computer while walking out of his room.

Walking out he stares at his place, furniture still new, all commodities still intact and everything else. He's not poor, in fact he's quite wealthy. He moves toward his door and opens it up while mumbling to himself "I need to get out of this place."

Another man walking in the streets stops by a bar, smiling he steps in only to be greeted by a heartening smile of a man

"Ah, Jay how you doing today, need a drink or something?"

"No, not in particular I'm just here for some chit chat and stuff Jack"

"Oh, so that's the case, well to be honest I don't have much to say though you do know that you have to pay to stay."

"Don't play with me Jack"

"Alright, alright I gotcha"

"So, any vixen around he…," Ring! Ring! "re, hey someone's here!"

"Oh, it's him"
